Welcome Letter

Toto, I have a feeling we aren’t in Kansas any more…..

When I moved to Carlisle in 2007, I had my own “Dorothy enters Oz” moment. My whirlwind of a job brought me to the one place I never expected – a small townin central Pennsylvania.

Unlike Dorothy, though, I quickly found myself at home in this strange new worldknown as Carlisle. With Pomfret Street serving as my personal Yellow Brick Road,I explored my new community and fell in love.

Carlisle has become home in a way that no other place I’ve ever lived has. The art, the music, the sense of small town comraderie and community, it’s everything I’d ever wanted in a hometown. From my first year here, I attended First Night, seeingmusicians and artists at work throughout the evening, and then standing, enthralled, with hundreds of other Carlislians, at midnight, as fireworks burst in the air.

It’s become a tradition of mine – standing at the corner of South West and WestHigh Streets, watching the fireworks, and speaking out loud my goals for the year.Over the years, my goals have varied wildly – there was the year I wanted to travelto Europe (achieved!), the year I was on chemo, and my only goal was to be aroundto see the fireworks the next year (also achieved, happily!), the year I decided tochange careers (achieved!) – and the past few years, my goal has been to make FirstNight Carlisle bigger and better than ever for my fellow Carlisle residents.

I’d like to think that goal has been accomplished too. It’s been a wild, crazy, thoroughly enjoyable ride at the helm of this ship, helping to make First NightCarlisle a celebration to remember for each of us here in town. I want to thank ourboard members, past and present, and my co-chair Amy Routson, who, after tonight, takes the reigns as the new director of this great non-profit.

And what of my goals this year? They’re still taking shape in my mind, but howeverthey look at midnight, I’m sure they’ll be spoken into existence under the burstingof the fireworks.

May all your dreams and goals for this new year come to fruition, and may we eachstrive for peace in our town, in our nation, and in our world – for we all must live together, and we need one another more than we know.

Happy New Year,Christin KappDirector, First Night Carlisle
