NOTES ON TODAY’S MUSIC

The Prelude and Fugue in C minor BWV549 is an early work of Bach from his years as organist at Mühlhausen (1703-1708) and which embodies stylistic elements deriving from Böhm, Buxtehude and Bruhns. Distinctly static in nature, the fugue is reminiscent of the Thuringia style (Buttstett), and is largely just for keyboards, although the last entry of the subject is entrusted to the pedals. Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) was one of the great early Romantic composers. He wrote profusely in almost all genres and, inspired by Bach and by Handel’s “Messiah” wrote “Elijah” a major oratorio for chorus, soloists and orchestra. “He watching over Israel” is one of the most famous choruses from this. Organist Marcel Dupré (1886-1971) performed over 2000 recitals throughout Europe and North America including the complete works of Bach from memory. In 1934, Dupré succeeded Charles-Marie Widor as titular organist at St. Sulpice in Paris, a post he held until his death in 1971. He was one of the most influential organ teachers of the 20th Century. This small motet was one of a set of four written during World War I for use at Ste. Sulpice. Sigfrid Karg-Elert (1877- 1933) was a German composer of considerable fame, best known for his choral works, orchestral music, and especially his compositions for organ and harmonium. Sigfried Karg studied music at the Leipzig Conservatory, where he would become a staff member in 1919. In the early part of his career, his agent suggested he add Elert to his surname. Karg-Elert's works, especially those written for organ, enjoyed reasonable popularity in the United States.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE READINGS

Jeremiah 29:1,4-7 (NRSV) These are the words of the letter that the prophet Jeremiah sent from Jerusalem to the remaining elders among the exiles, and to the priests, the prophets, and all the people, whom Nebuchadnezzar had taken into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon. 4Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: 5Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat what they produce. 6Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there, and do not decrease. 7But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.

Luke 17:11-19 (NRSV) On the way to Jerusalem Jesus was going through the region between Samaria and Galilee. 12As he entered a village, ten lepers approached him. Keeping their distance, 13they called out, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” 14When he saw them, he said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were made clean. 15Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice. 16He prostrated himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him. And he was a Samaritan. 17Then Jesus asked, “Were not ten made clean? But the other nine, where are they? 18Was none of them found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?” 19Then he said to him, “Get up and go on your way; your faith has made you well.”
