A Place Where Kids Are Safe and Loved . . . We have many reasons to be

proud (in the best sense!) of our church, but one of my greatest points of pride (in the best sense!) is the way our church welcomes children and youth. Generally, these young folks are more active and energetic than most of us; I’m thankful for the energy and enthusiasm they bring into

our building. I think I once displayed those tireless qualities, but it has been more than a few years ago! I was blessed to grow up in a Christian home in which my mom and dad took me to church from before the time I was born. Many of the children and youth who attend our church are also blessed in this way, but many of them are not. Some have only the adults here in our building to look to for Christian role models to emulate. Let us do our best to see that they know they are safe and loved here. Occasionally, one of these precious ones may bump into us in the hall while moving more quickly than we do. Big deal! Sometimes they may scratch a wall, spill a drink that stains the carpet, or break an item? So what? Someone has wisely said that it is easier to repair or replace these items than it is to re-claim an eternal soul. We do well to remind ourselves of Jesus’ words when His disciples sought to put themselves and their adult companions at ease by dismissing a group of children:

“Let the little children come to Me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not re-ceive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” (Mark 10:14-15)

The Scriptures say that “Jesus was indignant!” I believe when He saw His disciples rebuking the children, Jesus may have been angrier than at any other time. He knew how impressiona-ble these little ones were, and it is still true today. Again, let our gatherings be such that these children and youth are assured of their safety and our love for them. Re-member, “the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.”

When I think about February, I think about Valentine's Day and love. Love is the common theme through-out God's word, and yet we some-times take it for granted. This month, our Student Ministry is looking at what the apostle John has to say about love during our Sunday Morning

GROW Group. Through his gospel and letters, John desired to make it clear in our hearts what God's love is truly all about. Love for Jesus, love for others, and love for God's Word are results of knowing God's love personally. When we begin to have an understanding of just how much God loves us, our hearts should overflow with joy! To continue with knowing more about God's love, on Wednesday nights we're dig-ging deep into the book of Genesis. We see God's love right from the beginning! In crea-tion, in making us in His image, and in His drawing us to Himself so that we can be in fellowship and in a relationship with Him. Men like Abel, Noah, Abraham, and Joseph loved and trusted God, and by looking at their lives it is my prayer that we too have as strong a faith in God's love for us as these heroes did. So many of our students who attend this year's community wide Disciple Now Weekend, February 1st—3rd, will have the opportunity to continue growing in the love of Jesus, and show His love to their friends and family. The theme for this year is Unity. We know that when we are unified in loving Jesus and others in truth, the Lord works in our lives in incredible ways. Please join me in committing to pray for our students, as they come to know how deep the Father's love is for them.

I find myself often discussing worship as something we do throughout our daily lives. Our pattern of beliefs and the ways we worship include our weekly worship services, scripture reading, and the prayers that help us center ourselves on God. I think worship should interrupt our

daily lives with the goodness of God. As a church, we look to some aspects of the church calendar to help us look to God working throughout the entire year.

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions.

Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. - Psalm 51:1-17

As we are diving headfirst in a new year may this scripture be our confession and our prayer. That God would wash us clean and make us new. In doing so, we may walk through some som-ber moments. We are nearing Ash Wednesday and the season of Lent. The season of Lent is a time of repentance and a time to look inward at what God is doing in our lives. In the somber mo-ments, we are also called to look hopefully to the message of Easter. Lent helps to sober our hearts to the miracle of Easter. So, as we near Ash Wednesday, may we be a community that thinks of the ways God has and is continuing to redeem us. May we be thankful for all that we have been given. And may we celebrate Easter with full and sincere hearts.

Grace and Peace,

Joel

WORSHIP

Celebrating Birthdays

Have you noticed the Wives in Prayer (WIP) and the Moms in Prayer (MIP) groups in the youth room at FBCGV on Tuesday mornings (9am for WIP and 10 am for MIP)? Moms in Prayer is an international organiza-tion open to all women who have a heart for chil-

dren (whether you are a mom, grandma, aunt, sister or neither). Dur-ing our time in MIP, we praise and thank our Lord, and pray Scripture over our children. There is nothing more beautiful than hearing anoth-er mother pray Scripture over your child, and then having the oppor-tunity to pray for the teachers and administrators in our community here and elsewhere - this has been a true blessing to me. Wives in Prayer is as the title suggests - wives pray over each other with praises, thanksgiving and Scripture. We also pray over our husbands in the same way. Additionally, we pray for marriages in our churches and community here and elsewhere because marriages are under attack in America. These prayer times are for us as wives to lift up our hearts to the Lord and teach us how to pray for one another with love and compassion. Judy Lehnhardt and I have been praying over our own children for several years now and we have seen blessings beyond our imagi-

nation. Judy has been led to start the Wives in Prayer group because of the need in our churches and community. In both, what is prayed about stays in the group - we maintain confidentiality. There is no judg-ing or bashing - just prayers of supplication. Praying is referenced many times in the Bible for good reason: prayer works. For some of you I know there are anxiety, worry, and fear - so please come and pray with us!

1 Thessalonians 5:17—pray without ceasing (KJV) Matthew 18:20—For where two or three are gathered together

in my name, there am I in the midst of them. (KJV)

Sincerely,

Donnella Flowers-Carberry and Judy Lehnhardt
