Living Grief

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted. He saves those whose spirits have been crushed. –Psalm 34:18

If you listen closely, you hear it a lot at this time of year. Conversations that go like this: “How’s your summer going?” “Good—but way too fast!” Each year, what we consider “summer” in southern Minnesota seems to fly by. For some, maybe your rhythms of life don’t change all that much. For others, summer might mean quite a different schedule or maybe even a more relaxed schedule. Time at the pool or the lake. Time to travel or gather with friends and family. Time not spent bundling up and shoveling snow and chasing the daylight. Time to enjoy the summer’s evenings, weeks at camp, or family vacation. Time that is needed for renewal. …If you listen closely, you hear it a lot at this time of year… while preparations are being made for “fall”…there is a grieving the days of summer slipping by a little too quickly. Grief is a strange thing. Do you think about that very often? Perhaps grief strikes us most strongly at the time of a death, in losing a loved one. But here I’m talking about grieving the passing of a season that is enjoyable for many reasons where we live. When you really think about it, grief is universal and widespread—something we all live with day in and day out. It becomes a part of our lives—a part of us. In July, I attended a seminar at Calvin Theological Seminary in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Our sole focus was grief. And in our weeks’ time together, it seemed we just skimmed the surface. Together, we named various causes of grief. The list was extensive, but not exhaustive, naming things (other than death) like facing limitations as we age, lamenting that life has not turned out as you might have hoped, losing a part of your way of life as you get married or have children, dislocation or moving, losing your network of friends due to moves or fractured relationships, losing your identity when someone else dies (child, wife/husband, parent) having estranged family members, retirement, grieving losses that have not yet happened, even the grief that happens around weddings as relationships change. We named grief. We dove deep into the human experience of grief, and how we try to care for and support one another in healthy and unhealthy ways, helpful and not-so-helpful ways. We noted that it’s not very helpful or healthy to compare losses, as claiming that one is more difficult than another takes away from others’ losses. “Each experience of loss is unique, each painful in its own way, each as bad as everyone else’s but also different.” (A Grace Disguised by Jerry Sittser, p. 38) We examined the things we say to those who are grieving, and wondered if some of them are said (even with good intent) perhaps more to make situations less awkward or to try to “fix” someone’s situation with an easy answer to life’s big mysteries. We talked about how there is no way to prepare for loss, and there is no manual for how to grieve. We can’t place our own expectations of how someone “should” grieve on others. We all experience grief so very differently, and it doesn’t ever “go away”. We don’t ever “get over it”. Our grief is a part of us, whether it’s grieving the loss of a loved one or anything else in life, it’s a part of who we are. Some things to think about today. How do you experience grief—both immediately and long-term? How do you find your way through when it seems overwhelming? What do you find helpful and not helpful? How do you try to comfort others? Maybe have a conversation about this with someone. If you are looking for resources for yourself or someone else, or would like to talk, please do contact me. God’s Peace Be With You, Pastor Amy

Various First Lutheran/BLHALY events and happenings took place during Corn Chaff Days--thanks to all who work to help make it all go! Community Worship in the Park was held on Sunday morning during Corn Chaff Days, with about 100 in attendance. This year’s loose offering, totaling $311.50, went to Hector Community Spirit to support future community events.

Planning for the 2019-2020 Confirmation year is taking place. Three of our 8th graders attended Confirmation Camp July 14-19 at Green Lake with Pastor Jackie. Twelve others enjoyed a week at camp July 28-August 2 at Shores of St. Andrew.

July 21-26, Pastor attended The Bowed Head: How Preachers Deal with Grief seminar at Calvin Theological Seminary in Grand Rapids, MI, as a main continuing education course this year. (Pastor Amy also handed out a synopsis of what she learned from this seminar.)

August 5-10, the 2019 Triennial ELCA Churchwide Assembly took place in Milwaukee, WI. Our synod sends a delegation of approximately 30 voting delegates, who are elected at the previous year’s Synod Assembly. Each voting spot usually has 2-4 names for specific lay male, lay female, rostered male, rostered female positions. Carla Klawitter was one of the elected voting delegates from our synod.

July 10th marked Pastor Amy’s 5-year anniversary serving as pastor at First Lutheran. July 26th marked her 5-year anniversary of Ordination.

Thank you to Joyce Olinger for coordinating, Katie Rudeen for sending and tracking email responses, and all who donated pie or cake or helped out or worked at Pie-in-the-Park this year. …To Jan Melberg for coordinating the cleaning of the floors and chairs, and all who helped haul tables and chairs out of and back into the Fellowship Hall….To Tom & Cindy Schanil for providing food and ushering at the Corn Chaff Community Worship service in the park….To Paulette Johnson & Jan Melberg for organizing the Bloodmobile Blood Drive on August 14th…To all who support the Youth Account, to the WELCA and to the Churchmen for supporting our kids financially to go to camp.

Finance Committee: Todd, Gary, Ryan, Pastor Amy, Katie Rudeen, Mike Ovitt (Financial Secretary) and Tina Kuemper (Financial Treasurer) met last night. We are currently -$13,765.00 off of our budget for giving for the year. For the month of July, our giving was off by -$4100.00 although our Tithe.ly (online & automated) giving was up for the month of July. Members of the congregation are encouraged to use this option for their offering to the church.

Protocol of where to put the offering if we don’t count on a Sunday was discussed.

Synod Benevolence will be paid at the reduced rate based on our offering.

Youth & Education Committee: Sunday School Teacher Training & Room Prep is scheduled for August 19th at 6:30pm.

Rally Sunday worship will be September 8th at 10:00 AM, with a meal, Sunday school kick-off, and kids’ activities to follow. Megan Milbrandt and Abby Kirschbaum, co-Sunday School Superintendent’s are working hard to get things ready and going for Rally Sunday.

Confirmation Orientation is September 8th at 7:00pm at First Lutheran.

3rd Graders will receive their Bibles on September 22nd.

Worship & Music Committee: Will be meeting on Aug. 20 at 6:00 PM On August 25th, Pastor Amy will be on vacation. In her absence, there will be a Hymn Sing of congregational favorites. Carla will be playing piano and Paulette will be helping to lead the songs that day.

Exploring Screens in the Worship Space continues to be worked on. Ryan got a 3rd quote last week. One council member reported having heard a concern voiced that the banners will be covered and they don’t want this to be the case. There is a different option of an ascending projection screen in the center behind the altar to alleviate covering the banners. Options will continue to be reviewed, as this conversation continues.

Property Committee: Landscaping on the North side of the church has been completed. The building does need to be cleaned off with Hylex as it is very discolored. Major shrub trimming needs to be done around the entire church and a time will be scheduled to do so around the 2nd or 3rd week of September.

Lighting in the sanctuary was discussed. Ryan has been talking to a company to possibly improve the lighting around the lectern and altar.

Our current copy machine service agreement with Bennett Office Supply is expiring in January. Quotes were received and it was decided to go with Marco at $207.25 per month. Included in this contract: 60 Month MAP, Unlimited Printing, Fixed 5 year price, Includes all Toner, Service, Parts, Labor, Travel, etc., Delivery, Installation, Initial Supplies and Initial Training.

M/S/C by Michelle/Luke to approve the Marco unlimited per month contract.

The cement sidewalk is coming up outside of the kitchen. We are working on getting bids to get this replaced.

Looking into bids for professional cleaning of our windows.

Information about options for churches to attend in their college town may also be included.

Old and New Business: Back-The-Pack Update - First Lutheran is scheduled to make the deliveries in September 2019 and January 2020 and area volunteers will pack in April instead of January 2020.

Reminder: Committee chairs please send agenda items to Pastor Amy or President Katie Ovitt in advance of the council meeting by the Monday before the Council meets. Also, committees were encouraged to get together for a short visit before leaving the council meeting to touch base and to schedule meetings.

Gary announced that he will be resigning from Church Council, Special Music and Sound Tech as he is moving this fall. Steve Novotny is the alternate and he will be asked to fill in beginning in September. Gary was thanked for all he has done for our church family and was wished well as he begins this new journey in his life.

Local Mission for September is Back-the-Pack. The Renville County Back-the-Pack program was founded in 2011 by a group of teachers who saw a need for providing meals to local kids. Our mission is to close the missing meal gaps between available food assistance programs and the unmet needs of school-age residents of the Renville County School Districts and Head Start.

Global Mission for September is Second Harvest Heartland. Second Harvest Heartland believes no one should ever go hungry, as our region produces more than enough food for everyone. Helping hungry neighbors find their next meal—so they can thrive at work, in the classroom and in their communities—is what drives Second Harvest Heartland, its partners and supporters. Beyond feeding hungry neighbors, Second Harvest Heartland believes in the importance of our work to help sustain our environment. At Second Harvest Heartland, we work to end hunger through community partnerships. As one of the nation’s largest, most efficient and most innovative hunger relief organizations, we leverage our unique position in the emergency food chain to make an impact.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please see one of the committee members, Chad Paulson, Michelle Melberg, Dan Rettmann, Tammy Radloff, Paulette Johnson, Kathy Dean, and Keith Johnson. The Mission and Outreach Committee is looking for new members; please feel free to volunteer.

The MN Valley Fall Gathering and workshops are scheduled for Saturday, September 14th at Scandia Grove, St. Peter. Registration begins at 9:00am, followed by the Gathering at 9:30am. St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Hector is providing the pre-gathering coffee.

We will be having a W/ELCA meeting in the near future so watch in the bulletin announcements and upcoming Spirelights for the date.

Back-the-Pack Food Delivery Volunteers Needed – September 17th

/18th

and 24th

/25th

Again this year, our area churches, individuals, businesses and groups are supporting the Back-the-Pack food program at BLHS schools through Renville County Back-the-Pack. Area churches and volunteers in our district rotate the responsibility of picking up the bins of food packs in Olivia and delivering them to the high school and elementary school by month. It’s First Lutheran’s turn in September. So if YOU are able to help do this during school hours between Tuesday at noon and Wednesday at 3:00pm, please talk to Pastor Amy. We are needing volunteers the 17th/18th, and the 24th/25th. You must have a rather large vehicle, and be able to lift and load/unload 30-lb. totes. If anyone would like to ride along with Pastor Amy to learn how it works or just to help on the 10th/11th, talk to Pastor Amy.

Leading Worship: A Skills Workshop

Saturday, November 16 Cross of Calvary Lutheran Church, Olivia

9:00am - 3:00pm

Gathering for worship is at the core of what the church is and how we grow Everyday Spirituality. This day will build skills in three key aspects of vibrant and effective worship.

• Leading Worship: How to be effective when the church assembles for worship—reading, movement, praying, officiating.

• Planning Worship: Resources and best practices over the course of the year. • Music: New ideas and approaches to enhance the assembly’s song.

Each workshop will be 90 minutes long and will be repeated twice so participants will have their choice of two workshops to attend.

Worship committee members, church musicians, assisting ministers, and people serving in Synodically Authorized Ministry sites are especially encourage to attend.

Please talk to Pastor Amy or Katie Rudeen if you would like to register to attend this event.

Musicians/Singers/Special Music

We are looking for individuals to provide special music during Sunday morning worship. We would also love to have more musicians and singers for our contemporary band. This can be a one time

“gig” or an ongoing commitment. If you’re interested in helping in this way, please contact Pastor Amy or any member of the Worship & Music

Committee.
