As Dr. Bob Winstead begins a process of consultation with FUMC to help us focus on our future, the Prayer Ministry Team would like to encourage all members of FUMC to be in prayer for this important process. As shared September 27, this process will continue over the next several months. Please be in prayer for our church leaders, staff, Dr. Winstead and all persons involved in this search for vision and direction. Pray that we as a church will be open to God’s Spirit moving in our midst, willing to listen to one another, and willing to follow where the Spirit leads us. Over the coming weeks, we will have several opportunities for you to participate in prayers for this process.

Praying with you, Tharon Kirk, Prayer Ministry Team Co-chair

ARISE Jacksonby Paula Butler

The first week of ARISE Jackson/Team Read was a huge success. Students came with enthusiasm and left with smiles, as did the volunteer coaches.

Jackson First United Methodist Church is partnering with Lincoln Elementary School. Lincoln has enough volunteers for each second grade student to be seen twice a week! This means there are 65 volunteers coming to Lincoln from 16 different churches. Jackson FUMC has 30 volunteers at Lincoln and 3 other volunteers coaching at different schools.

Team Read is a process developed several years ago by Shelby County reading specialists and members of the Germantown United Methodist Church. Coaches work with students on the Fry Word list of the 1000 most frequent words seen in literature, newspapers and magazines. If students learn the first 300 words they can read 67% of all written materials.

Volunteers give one hour a week to work individually with two students, 30 minutes each.

Even though Lincoln has enough volunteers, ARISE Jackson still needs more volunteers for students in the other 6 schools receiving Team Read coaching.

If you are interested in receiving more information about ARISE Jackson/Team Read, contact Becky Sadowski ([email protected]) or Paula Butler ([email protected]).

This is another great book by Max Lucado! This book focuses on Joshua and the Hebrews wandering in the desert when they could have been in their glory land. Have you ever felt that way... looking for direction?

Even if you're familiar with this story, the way Lucado writes about it brings it to life. He shares practical scriptures with us and gives usthetoolstoliveamorefulfilling, joyfilledChristianlifeandwalk.
