Journey is a word I find helpful when thinking about the Christian life. Many people think of Christianity using the word destination. They are referring to a moment in time when they professed faith in Christ – “I once was lost, but now am found.” In my understanding when someone is referring to that saving moment, they are reflecting on a very important and decisive point along the journey. But it is not the end of the story! Once you have decided to follow Christ, there is so much more! That is why we talk about growing in your faith, and being intentional about growing. The Christian life is a journey, and as we take it, we learn more about God and ourselves, and discover a deeper, richer life than we ever imagined.

In this issue of Connections we want to introduce you to our Intentional Faith Development Team. This team is ably led by Rodney Whifield, Rich Rindfuss, Fred Trevino, and Elizabeth Wilson. We call it an intentional faith development team, not a random one. If you want to get in shape, you not only have to be intentional about going to the gym, it helps if you also use the equipment, and learn from those who can teach you. If you want to grow in your faith, it requires more than just attending church. It is being intentional about the journey, making a plan for growth, and diving in deeper. Look for course offerings this fall and take a step on your journey!

In this issue of connections you will also meet our Senior Adult Ministry Team, under the wonderful leadership of Fred Trevino. I can’t keep up with all of the activities of this active group. One of our new members shared with me that they had visited churches all over town, and that FUMCR has the strongest Senior Adult Ministry of any church in the area. As you learn about what they are doing, I think you will agree.

During August and September I will be preaching two sermon series. The first is called Going Viral, in which we will talk about what it means to live and share our faith. The second, Core Training, is really a basics course on getting in spiritual shape. Be here for worship, and invite new people in your neighborhood to join us on the journey!

In Christ,

Clayton Oliphint

Writing by rich rindfuss, fred treviño, rodney Whitfield, elizabeth Wilson

We are all on the journey called life. We invite you to join us on the greatest journey of life—The Journey of Worshiping, Growing, and Serving—as we strive to become disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. We recognize getting started is sometimes the hardest part. First we must recognize we are on a spiritual journey. Second we must decide what steps to take. This is difficult if we are not sure where we are or where we are going. The Intentional Faith Development Team is here to support, guide, and encourage you along the way. We believe that the greatest joy, the greatest challenge, and the greatest meaning come from journeying into the life God has created for us to live.

Seven key practices are offered along with practical ideas for weaving them into everyday life.

VOYAGES Voyages move you beyond the basic knowledge and understanding of the biblical text and allow you to journey deeper in your faith experience. Examine the word and tackle difficult questions. A Success

StoryWriting by dan and cathy Murphree,

JiM and diane grandey

The Pathway with Purpose Capital Stewardship Campaign was kicked off in March 2008 by Dan and Cathy Murphree, Campaign Executive Directors, and Jim and Diane Grandey, Campaign Managers. The charge they were given by Terry Brehm, Project Executive Committee Chairperson, was to lead a Capital Stewardship Campaign to accomplish three priorities:

1. Enhance financial flexibility by reducing the existing loan balance of $12 million dollars.

2. Add a third education building for additional classroom and meeting room space.

3. Build a music suite to support our music programs.

A key milestone for the campaign was reached on Commitment Sunday April 20, 2008 when church members made their three year pledges to support the campaign. A total commitment of $8.5 million was received which allowed the Project Executive Committee to proceed with the loan reduction and construction of a new education building, deferring the music suite to a future building phase.

On Sunday, May 17, 2009 on the land west of the existing education buildings, ground was broken for a 15,000 sq. foot building. This building features seven new multi-use classrooms for children and adults as well as an enhanced new location for the library. Other features include a second elevator and a large multi-use room on the first floor with a small kitchenette.

Pathway With Purpose UpdateBy Terry Brehm

On behalf of the Project Executive Committee (Clayton, Holly Lee, John Hutchings, Melinda Lawrence, Mike Spence, and myself) I am happy to provide this update. Back in the fall of 2007, we presented a plan to the congregation for the next building phase and stated two major goals for the campaign:

• Increase the financial flexibility of the church

• Provide funding for the new facilities without increasing our long- term debt

I am happy to report that the Building Committee delivered a much needed addition to the education space for the campus, and we were able to increase our financial flexibility by applying the first $5 million of the pledged dollars to pay down the existing loan balance.

You may be wondering what the plan is for the next building phase. At this point, the Executive Committee feels it is time to give the congregation a “breather” before we move on to the next building phase and capital campaign. We plan to let the Strategic Plan and the needs of the congregation drive the content and the timing of the next building phase.

Speaking for the Project Executive Committee and the Building Committee, I want to once again thank each of you for your continued support and prayers as we continue on this journey to provide the facilities that will allow us as a congregation to better Welcome People for Christ, Grow People in Christ, and Serve People with Christ. While the PWP campaign has officially ended, many contributors will continue to pay out their pledges over the remainder of the year.

Thanks again.

Approximately a year later, construction of the new education wing was completed and celebrated with an Open House on May 2, 2010.

Over the past three years, during a difficult economy, church members have given faithfully toward their pledges and the campaign. With God’s help, two campaign priorities have been completed:

• We have paid down $5 million in principal on the existing long-term debt. As contributions were received, payments were made to reduce the debt. The $5 million goal was was reached in January 2010.

• We added a third education building without incurring any additional long-term debt. We completed construction on the new building in April 2010 and fully paid off the Construction Line of Credit in April 2011.

In addition to providing space for the church library, and additional adult Sunday school rooms on Sunday mornings, the new space has added more flexibility to our Children’s Ministry programs. Allison George, Director of Children’s Ministry, reports that our special needs program now has more space for the children to move around, which is critical to meeting the unique needs of these kids. It has given more flexibility to our weekday after-school program which now allows a classroom for each age group with plenty of space and age-appropriate sized furniture. Our Mother’s Day Out program has doubled in size in the past year because we now have more space to accommodate these children. This has helped us meet an immediate need in the community. And this year’s Vacation Bible Camp, which occurs for a week each summer and brings in children from all over the community, had 500+ children in attendance, and no classes had to be held in hallways as in years past.

“Pathway with Purpose has been the largest capital campaign in our church’s history, a testament to

the commitment of this congregation. First United Methodist Church Richardson is a church faithful to

God’s call—a church that will continue to grow and provide facilities and programs to reach

more people for Christ. Thanks be to God!”

Writing by KiM o’neil

Fred Treviño was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, where he grew up in a family of 10 children. His mother raised this large family after his father’s death when Fred was 12 years old. He grew up with Catholic traditions, but they weren’t practiced much in his home. When he was in high school, he and 2 other friends decided they would attend the youth fellowship at Travis Park UMC. They thought maybe they could meet a few cute girls there. Travis Park UMC soon became the beginning of his lifelong journey of ministry. Two women counselors saw leadership qualities in this young boy and nurtured him through his high school years and led him on the path to ministry. Fred soon became the conference youth council president.

After high school, he received the opportunity to go and serve as song leader and recreation leader at Mount Wesley Conference youth camp for a summer. At camp, he excelled as song and recreation leader. It was here that he met the love of his life, fellow counselor, Laverne Beckendorf.

After two summers as camp leader he went to Southwestern University on a 4-year scholarship, given by United Methodist individuals. Fred managed to marry his camp counselor love, Laverne, and have two children before his graduation where he received a degree in Christian Education.

Now with a family to support, he soon became a Youth Director in various churches and in various states: Brownsville, Texas; Walawa, Washington and, soon to follow, Des Moines, Washington. After a summer seminar at Claremont School of Theology in Southern California 1968, he felt the call to the ordained ministry. He soon received a scholarship to Claremont and obtained his Master of Divinity degree.

Fred then went on to serve a number of churches in the California-Pacific Conference over the next 20 years. Three churches in California, one in Hawaii, then on to Lake Havasu, Nevada, Tucson, AZ. He served three years as a District Superintendant in Las Vegas, Nevada. He then went on to serve in Paradise Valley, AZ at the largest UMC in Arizona. He semi

retired in 1998 and moved back to Texas where he and Laverne settled in Brenham, TX. There, he served as interim pastor at three small churches and associate pastor at Brenham First UMC.

After 8 years in Brenham, with the desire to be near his grandchildren and daughter, Kim O’Neil (Children’s Choir Director, here at FUMCR) and the desire to be back in a big city, Fred and Laverne moved to Garland, TX where they now reside. After just three months of full retirement, Fred was asked to serve here at FUMCR as Associate Pastor for Senior adults.

Fred’s ministry here at this church has been invaluable to all, especially the senior adults of this church. Some of his duties have included: Leading Bible studies, Leading the Gathering (Monthly Senior Adult lunch and program), Senior dinner, Laugh and Rejoice banquet, Winterfest event, Mount Seqoyiah trips for faith enrichment, preaching and performing weddings and funerals.

Fred is 75 years old and still going strong. He has been married to Laverne Treviño for 54 years now, with 2 children, Tam Treviño who resides in Brenham, TX and Kim O’Neil of Murphy, TX. He has 4 grandchildren. He loves to go to movies, musical concerts, read books and watch Masterpiece Theater. He loves his job and the word retirement seems to elude his vocabulary. Laverne and Fred have returned to Hawaii every summer for the past 20 years for a 6-week haitus. He feels honored and blessed to work at FUMCR and looks forward to wonderful years of leadership ahead.

Czech RepublicThis year marked the 4th trip to the Czech Republic since 2007 and our partner church, Horni Pocernice UMC in Prague. Ten FUMCR members continued building the relationship with the congregation and helped with work projects around the church. We worshiped together, had a dinner on the grounds, and a “grill party” with the congregation, the minister and his family. The team completed three work projects: assembly and painting of a bicycle rack, solving a drainage problem around the foundation of the church/parsonage building, and building a gazebo/shed. In addition to these projects we rented two keyboards for Janis Haydel and Dellana Cook to play during worship on Sunday. Radek Novotny, the minister, also made arrangements for Janis and Dellana to play for two senior citizen groups in the community. After the time in Prague, the team traveled to Cesky Krumlov, an medieval town south of Prague that has retained old world buildings and charm. After an overnight stay we traveled to Vienna, Austria for three days of sightseeing. The entire trip was a wonderful experience. Our time with our partner church was so special for us all. New friendships were made and old friendships were renewed.

HaitiOn March 10 FUMCR sent a work team into a new area of service opportunity. The team went to Haiti, barely one year after the devastating earthquake hit that island country. It was an unforgettable experience! We stayed at the Methodist church and school in Carrefour, a suburb of Port Au Prince. We had no electricity or running water, no power tools—everything was accomplished by people power. The work was hot and physically hard and the living conditions were at basic camping level. Our project was to build the foundation for a bathroom with toilets and showers at the school. The work included hauling rock, debris, and buckets of cement, as well as rock breaking with sledge hammers. We worked with local people hired to help with the project and we had the opportunity to interface with the school principal and children. Despite the poor living conditions and very hard work, everyone had a wonderful and a “once in a lifetime experience.” FUMCR is scheduled to send a team in March 2012.

TennesseeJune 18-25 fourteen members of FUMCR journeyed to Goodlettsville, Tennessee, 16 miles north of Nashville, to help with flood recovery from the May 2010 floods that left 5000 people homeless. The team worked on a home in the town of Gallatin and traveled the 23 miles between two towns daily to work. Our home owners had been out of their home for 13 months and were anxious to return. The main projects that needed to be completed to enable them to return were the installation of the kitchen cabinets, a hardwood floor in the family room, two toilets and sinks in bathrooms, and a hot water heater and utility sink. The team accomplished all of those during the week. In addition we did a lot of yard work and other smaller finish tasks inside the house. It was a great week and those who went had just the right skills to get the various jobs done for the family. On Sunday afternoon while sightseeing in Nashville wearing our workcamp T-shirts we had a number of people come up to us. They would ask us who we were and what we were doing there. When we told them, they all thanked us many times for coming and helping out. The Ryman Auditorium (home of original Grand Ole Opry) gave us discounts for a show that evening because of our mission. What an amazing experience—a job well done for a deserving family!
