FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH, OWENSBORO (Disciples of Christ) THE

CALLER No. 17 Vol. 13 ~ September 5, 2017

From the Preacherman…. The beginning of September marks six months for me as your pastor.

Yes, it is difficult to believe that it has already been that long. My family arrived, as did my furniture; well, most of it. We are grateful and thankful to God to be able to share life and faith with you in this place. What have I observed about our life together in this church over the course of these last few months?

I have noticed how you value worship and teaching and fellowship and service. These are classic, bedrock claims of the Christian community from of old. The early church in Acts lived out the faith in this manner, and no matter what else we focus on or care about, these things really matter. The Christian faith is not complicated, extravagant or complex, but it is deep, very deep, and profound in myriad ways. You do well to live out these practices in the world. They matter.

It is obvious that you have a difficult past with which you are still dealing. The last several years have been hard and cannot be forgotten. You need to tell and retell the stories of your time in the wilderness. I have heard over and over that people experienced God in so many ways during hard times of dislocation and discomfort. Because of this you have powerful resources to share with others who have lost much. Just your presence matters. Tell your stories.

I am convinced that your future is full of hope. The God of the crucifixion is also the God of resurrection. We preach both Good Friday and Easter with our lives, sometimes daily, and while we cannot ever forget the difficulties of the past, we live towards the promise and reality of resurrection. The best way for me to say it is honest hope: we have honest, real, painful, powerful hope. I have lived that. So have you.

People are desperate to hear about honest hope in this world. They grow weary of hearing only heartache. They distrust faith that ignores the difficulty to shout glory all the time. What we share in this place is the honest hope of death and resurrection. That is real and it is the essence of the gospel, and it is good news in this world where it seems all the news is bad. It is not. There is hope.

So, let’s have some ordinary, everyday, run-of-the-mill life together. God knows, you have had your crises. Jesus promised that even after death there was life. You know that, in your bones. Tell others.

Peace….Chris

Reaching  Ringers              The  music  ministry  is  hoping  to  restart  our  handbell  program  in  the  fall.              The  bells  need  to  be  refurbished  after  the  fire  at  a  sizeable  expense.    Before  we  ship  them  off,  we  want  to  know  that  there  is  reasonable  interest  and  enough  players  to  justify  that  expenditure.              Prospective  ringers  5th  grade  through  adult  please  see  Mike  Tichenor  or  contact  the  Church  Office.

All are invited to Jim Wimsatt’s 99th Birthday Celebration
