Dining for Dollars Silent Auction Sunday May 31st
8:45 a.m. -12:30 p.m.
Maybe it was turning 60 this year. (I know, hard to believe but true.) Maybe it was my father’s open heart surgery. (He is doing very well, thank you.) Maybe it is the sesqui-centennial. (Now that you know how to spell it, can you pronounce it?) Maybe it is the final meeting of the Christian Women’s Fellowship this month. (CWF has been a key force in the life of this congregation for most of those 150 years.)
Whatever the reason, I am increasingly pondering legacy--mine and the congrega-tion’s. A funny thing happened at the most recent meeting of our newly formed safety committee. Working on strategies for how we can safely serve both our members and the hundreds of homeless and low-income citizens who come to us for various kinds of assistance, the committee quickly came to the realization that our service to the some of the most vulnerable people in the community is the ministry for which we are most widely known and respected. While that work has presented many challenges
and difficulties for us that sometimes has been detrimental to the church or members, it has also attracted a number of new and prospective members. Thus the committee is committed to not just improving the safety of all concerned, they are also committed to strengthening those ministries at the same time. Led with helpful insights by new member Mary Brobry, the committee is doing some very, creative “out-of-the box” thinking. Then there is the work of our strategic plan leader, John Thompson, who keeps our focus on the vision that we launched in 2008 with our “Future Story”. Step by step, brick by brick, we keep building on that plan to intentionally create the future we desire for the congregation. Our Resource Ministry is hard at work securing our financial future, evident in the planning for “Dining for Dollars” once again and the nearly completed Warming Hearts Campaign. The Global Mission Team has worked hard on raising our awareness of and support for the incredible Global Missions we share with the United Church of Christ. All of these and so much more done by our dedicated volunteers add up to a legacy of a church with a servant heart focused on be-ing a light to the world in the heart of Eugene.
It would be sufficient for me to have played some role in that legacy, but the work I am now doing with Opportunity Village Eugene (soon to be Square One Villages to distinguish the non-profit from the location of our first project) leads me to believe that there is an even larger legacy to be had which I very much desire to share with the congregation. I plan to share the vision for this legacy in my sermon on May 31. If you missed it, you will be able to find it on our web-site, www.heartofeugene.org. In a nutshell, it is to significantly change the way we do affordable housing, not just in Eugene but throughout Oregon and the country. Our current model of affordable housing provides very nice, attractive housing for a select few. The cost of that housing compared to the numbers of people who need it effectively means that we will never build our way out of the problem of homelessness. We need a new model that is still safe, attractive and well-built, but more cost efficient than the current models. The next project of Square One Villages, Emerald Village Eugene (EVE), will be a pilot project for such a model.
They say God leads in mysterious ways. Indeed. I never foresaw myself as a housing policy wonk, but I have come to see homelessness as one of the biggest issues of economic justice we face today. Serving the homeless without address-ing the underlying issues that make them homeless is like Moses announcing to the Hebrew slaves, “Good news, I’ve negotiated a new contract with Pharaoh that gives us 15 minute coffee breaks twice a day!” I believe our legacy goes way beyond all the incredible work for which we are already known. Our legacy is a home for thousands of people who currently have none and little hope of ever getting one. I hope you will join me in making this the eve of a new era, or the era that begins with EVE.

Interfaith Night Shelter is underway at FCC. Every year, we host homeless families for three weeks. They sleep and eat breakfast and dinner with us. Volunteers prepare and clean up meals for families, lead craft activities for children, and stay overnight in the church (cot provided) as a liaison between St. Vincent de Paul and our church. Volunteers are still needed for overnight hosting during the first two weeks of June. Please contact Mike Moreno at 541-988-3083 to sign up. Thanks to all who volunteered the last week of May.

Community Events
An update from the FCC Safety and Security Volunteer Task Force:
Your volunteer members include David Frisinger, Dick Lauer, Donna Reitz, Evelyn Anderton, Jerry Smith, Lisa Landers, Liz Dowdy, Marie Strauss, Rex Bradley, Richard Murray, April Oristano, and myself-Mary Brorby. We have met three times and have identified the primary ministries we serve through our church community and identified common challenges and issues within the three ministries. Currently we are developing “Standard Operating Guidelines & Procedures.” Some members of our task force have gathered information and helpful suggestions from other organizations which serve the homeless and needy. We have also identified the need for training of our own staff and volunteers in dealing with the population we are servicing. Some changes have already been implemented which have had positive outcomes, like clearly identifiable parking lot volunteers on Sunday and during Helping Hand Room hours. We have a very conscientious, hard working and diverse task force working for our church community. Please contact any of us if you have suggestions or questions. My contact information (not in church directory) is: Mary Brorby - Phone: (541) 521-3532 - Email: [email protected] you from the Task Force
Sustaining the House of Hope A Challenge for Palestinians and All of Us

You are invited to attend a unique peace-building event in Eugene on June 19. Milad Vosgueritchian and Manar Wahhab, a young Palestinian couple from al-Eizariya, will speak about the “House of Hope” they created in their West Bank suburb of Jerusalem. After their talk, Milad and Manar will participate in a discussion with the audience.
Milad and Manar were invited to visit our community by Eugene resident Steve Goldman, who met them last November and again in February, when he traveled to Israel and the West Bank to participate in trainings in Nonviolent Communication (NVC) with Israelis, Palestinians, and internationals from seven countries.
The event is co-sponsored by CALC and members of the local Eugene community.

CWF NEWSChristian Women’s Fellowship (CWF) is having its last meeting at a luncheon on Tuesday June 2 at 11 am with a light lunch served at 12 noon. We’re inviting the women of First Christian Church to celebrate the past and to see if there is a new way for the Disciple women to share in helping bring the Kingdom of God on “earth as it is in heaven”. Our CWF was organized in 1951 with the purposes of study and support for world-wide ministries of Disciple churches and local ministries. But Disciple women had a vision for world missions beginning in the 1870‘s when Caroline Neaville Pearre, teacher and Disciples minister’s wife wrote: “Dear Sisters, while the brethren are talking about women’s work in the church, show them you know what it is by doing it...while the “lords of creation” are discussing the matter.” After daily prayer Caroline Pearre felt God’s call to lead the work herself. She formed a missionary group in her own congregation and helping organize the Christian Woman’s Board of Missions, which sent the first Disciple missionaries overseas.
Caroline listened for God’s voice, heard it, and embraced her vision. CWBM was the forerunner of on-going organizations by Disciples that have carried the message of God’s saving grace around the world. It now lives on in Global Ministries, a joint organization with the United Church of Christ.
Our local CWF group has dwindled to fewer than a dozen aging women in the group (there used to be ten groups here) who still want to support the world-wide church, but have decided to disband and sink into whatever new or current structures that may meet the needs of more, physically stronger Disciple women. Some possible examples to explore: --a mission/fellowship group, --Power and Light to raise the level of our environmental stewardship--maybe explore the vision of solar panels for our electrical needs. --Landscaping work on our property, maybe establish a Rain Garden--Support group for our local ministries: Helping Hand Room, Good Samaritan Ministry, Sunday Breakfast including volunteering services--Housing for the homeless--Bible classes--Reception group for decorating and serving church functions such as meals or snacks after memorial services--Calling on shut-ins and/or inactive members with encouragement--After church lunch invitations to new people to get acquainted--Sewing baby quilts for layettes of Helping Hands--Participate in earth-saving local organizations such as That’s My Farmer, Interfaith Earthkeepers, 350.org, Citizens’ Climate Lobby--Re-establish Cradle Roll to affirm our welcome to families with new babies.--Build up peace and justice groups--There are plenty of other options to help build up our church’s participation in church, community and global ministries.--Your vision?_____
Donations can be made for the lunch, that will be added to our final offering that supports Global Ministries and the rebuilding of the Wema hospital in Congo where Phyllis and her husband spent five years as Disciples missionaries.
Do You Know Your Church History?*The Significance of June?
June, 1908, James Blood donated his college tuition savings as the first pledge toward the building of the steamship “Oregon,” which served on the Congo River for many years.
