Driver Recruitment

Safety Performance 2009 / 2010For the fiscal periods 9, 10, 11 of 2009/2010, First Capital Connect continued to maintain and deliver real improvements in a number of key safety and operational performance areas. Improvements compared against the same fiscal periods of 08/09 include:

� 33% improvement in all Workforce Injuries (40 in 2008, 27 in 2009);

� 24% improvement in Passenger Minor Injuries (37 in 2008, 28 in 2009);� 9% improvement in Workforce Physical Assaults (11 in 2008, 10 in 2009);� 80% improvement in SPADs (5 in 2008, 1 on 2009);� 57% improvement in Station Overruns (14 in 2008, 6 in 2009).

• FCC retained the company wide ISO 14001 accreditation during the latest surveillance audits in December 2009.

• Since activation of the class 377 regenerative braking function in September 2009, 1 003 000 kWh of energy has been generated and fed back into the infrastructure reducing CO2 emissions by 546 tonnes.

• Customer recycling points are now at a total of 25 stations.

• In January 2010 the recycling recovery rate peaked at 31.43 % compared to 19.45% in April 2009 with an average rate of 25% for the year resulting in 399 tonnes of waste being recycled and reducing waste sent to landfill by 9.25% compared to last year.

• Depot and siding gas usage has decreased by 31.37% compared to last year. After corrections for new infrastructure (new washplants and extensions) depot and siding electricity usage has decreased by 4.32%.

• Station electricity usage is being collected from the 75 smart meters in place to form a accurate baseline for 2010/2011 and in preparation for the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme.

� Class 321 awarded the prestigious Golden Spanner (first fleet in FCC to attain this accolade)

� 319 Growth plan implemented

� Class 319 availability requirements have now allowed the C6

programme to continue with only 2 units remaining to go through this

process

� Laminated glass fitment started across all FCC fleets

� 23 x class 377 units on the Thameslink route

� London and the South East recorded an overall satisfaction of 82% (no change year on year and up 2% wave on wave)

� Overall satisfaction at a national level was 83% (up 1% year on year and 2% wave on wave)

� Wave 21 is the first occasion since Wave 15 where FCC has shown a downward trend where LSE and National results have improved

Customer Information Update

� CIS replacement software tender is progressing, upgraded software will be introduced and result in one system throughout FCC. It will deliver improved accuracy of information, reduce late notice platform alterations and make it easier to manage during disruption

� As part of this project automated PA announcing will be introduced at stations between Moorgate and Drayton Park. This will be introduced over the summer and completed before the end of the year

� Driver announcements good practises are being developed and encouraged

Customer Information Update� A project to deliver improved information to Revenue Protection, gate

line and platform staff by issuing them with Blackberries has commenced. The first Blackberries are being issued to RPIs with full rollout of over 250 devices by June 2010. Further software will be added in the future. The Blackberries will enable access to:

• National Rail Enquiry staff services and other real time information systems• Tyrell messages sent via email to the devices removing the needfor Pagers• Company information such as E-news and Fastlines direct to the device

� www.firstcapitalconnect.co.uk will be overhauled to make it more user friendly and make information updates during disruption clearer and more informative and we will involve key stakeholders in design

� Passenger Information During Disruption – FCC is heavily involved in the PIDD Steering Group. All TOCs and NER have been assessed against PIDD principles and FCC has been identified as having many best practice processes for managing disruption and are sharing these with the industry

� Customer Information Best Practice – FCC are working with Southern, East Coast and C2C to develop a Best Practice Guide and standards for use of CIS and PA at stations. This has been signed off by the national Passenger Information Strategy Group in March

� Wimbledon Loop CIS and Automatic PA –Customer Information Screens and automatic train announcing has been installed on the 7 unstaffed Wimbledon Loop stations. To improve granuality of train movement Train Stop sensors have been installed at 3 of the stations due to limited Train Describer (TD) berths.

� Additional CIS screens – 20 additional CIS screens have been installed at Bedford, Luton, St Albans, Mill Hill Broadway, Kentish Town, Hatfield, Huntingdon, Royston, Finsbury Park, St. Neots, Stevenage and Letchworth Garden City.

Ticketing Systems

� The migration of ticket sales away from ticket offices to self service machines continues to rise. In Period 12 tickets issued through self-service were 42%. The sale of Oyster products is now available through all Greater London self-service machines.

� FCC now accepts Electron and Solo payment cards through its ticket offices and self-service machines.

� Top ticket destinations on self-service machines have been reviewed and updated to reflect customer purchasing habits.

� Additional Self-service machine installed at King’s Cross

� Carnet and Rovers now available through self-service.

PAYG Implementation

� PAYG was extended (as planned) throughout the London Fare

zones area on the 2nd January 2010.

� All FCC TVMs were able to retail Oyster products within the first

week of go live. Growth has been impressive,

� The ability to order PAYG credit and Travelcards online and pick up

at stations has also proved popular.

� The only major issue is that the Oyster Help Line has struggled to

cope with demand due to very high call volumes following the

PAYG extension and the weather. However TfL have taken action

and call abandonment rate is now significantly down to 15%.

Crime Prevention & Security� Crime Issues – To address bicycle

thefts on the network covert activity took place with FCC’s CCTV Centre and the BTP. This resulted in arrests at Huntingdon and Arlesey. The latter admitting to 50 offences.

� CCTV Installations – new CCTV schemes were installed at Waterbeachand St Albans Multi Storey Car Park.

� Additional Secure Stations achieved. 67 (90%) FCC stations now have this accreditation.

Car Park Mark Awards Park Mark Awards We have been working hard to improve the safety and security of our car parks. The BTP and BritishParking Association (BPA) have been assessing our Station car parks over recent months. FCC has beenawarded 7 new awards as a result of our decreasing vehicle crime trends and general safety and securityimprovements. Bedford Station Relocation - £5m

� Grip 3: Option selection process is complete, with a stakeholderconsultation document received from Network Rail.

� Grip 4: Single option development is currently progressing and expected to be complete April 2010.

� The site for the new station building is immediately South of the existing station, and is a two storey facility linking to all platforms via a footbridge.

� The new station building, and ticket office, are central to the footbridge.

� The design takes into account forecasted passengers flows to 2016 + 35%

� FCC currently reviewing the proposed new station layout plan. � Site works envisaged to commence during Summer 2010 with new
