ife Peru Mission Team Yard Sale Update
The Peru Mission Team Yard Sale fundraiser was a success again this year! We raised almost $1,300! Thanks to everyone who donated items and to those who helped with setting up and breaking down the sale! As we begin to plan for the 2017 trip, please let Janet Smith know if you are interested in joining the team. She has tentatively scheduled the trip for the end of June/beginning of July 2017. Remember, youth age 16 or older can be a part of the team without a parent accompanying them. Anyone younger than 16 will need to have a parent join as well. If enough of the team members are willing/able to go for 2 weeks, we will visit 2 different homes this trip. Because it is difficult for some team members to take 2 consecutive weeks of vacation from work, you can choose
to participate in only 1 week of the trip.
If you are not called to travel to Peru, you can still be a member of the team! We need all the help we can get to organize future fundraisers and manage the planning of the trip. And most of all, we need your prayers! Thanks for the amazing support for our past
trips and the continued support in the future! Janet Smith ([email protected])

Dear Church Family,
Thank you very much for your calls, cards, visits, words of concern; and, most of all, your
prayers for both of us during the time of Mike’s surgery and recovery. We are both still
in therapy and would appreciate your continued prayers. Your love and concern as our
church family mean a great deal to both of us.

ife Honor your father and mother….
One of my favorite people in the world is a guy in Whiteville named Kirby Sanderson. Kirby is one of the funniest people I know, and he always brings a smile to
everyone around him.
Kirby would come by my office every Sunday in Whiteville to deliver materials from the Sunday school office. We had a little ritual: Kirby would ask if I was ready for my sermon and he would offer to assist me if he was needed. He envisioned it to be kind of like tag team wrestling, only with a sermon. “You just tag me and I’ll go in there!” (My church member who owned the local radio station made it clear I was not to let Kirby on
the air!)
One Mother’s Day, I was in my office preparing for worship. I heard that familiar voice, and I
knew immediately it was he.
“Preacher Man, is that you back there?”
Kirby poked his head in my office. We exchanged pleasantries, and then he asked me a powerful question. “Are you going to honor my
mother today?”
I thought about that for a second. “Are you going to honor my mother today?” It’s a great question. But, as Kirby and I thought about it, we realized
Kirby had asked the wrong person.
It seems the tantamount question is not whether I honored Kirby’s mom in worship. Instead, the question is: does Kirby honor his mother by the way he lives his life? Indeed,
the question for each of us is: Are you going to honor your mother and father today?
At the heart of this is the commandment: Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you. (Exodus 20:12) We all have those opportunities to honor our parents by our actions. The things we do reflect our upbringing. I cannot tell you how many times I heard from my parents, “Remember whose child you are!” The implicit message from Mom and Dad was clear:
What you do reflects on us.
Of course, that conversation is not limited to our earthly and biological parents. Are we honoring our grandparents and other family members who so deeply shaped us? Are we honoring those spiritual parents that gave so much to us? Most importantly, are
we honoring our Father in heaven?
As we move through this time of year that includes Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, I hope we all ask Kirby’s question. Are we honoring our parents? Moreover, are we
honoring our Heavenly Parent? It’s a great question.
Grace and peace, Kendell Cameron
