Teach us, Lord, full obedience,

Holy reverence, true humility; Test our thoughts and our attitudes

In the radiance of Your purity. Cause our faith to rise; cause our eyes to see

Your majestic love and authority. Words of pow’r that can never fail-

Let their truth prevail over unbelief.

Speak, O Lord, and renew our minds; Help us grasp the heights of Your plans for us-

Truths unchanged for the dawn of time That will echo down through eternity.

LEARNING FOR LIFE – SUNDAYS, 9:30-10:30 A.M.

Spiritual Disciplines: Creating Space for God Facilitator: Ron Phillips Today - May 29, 9:30-10:30 a.m.

Spiritual disciplines are intentional practices that serve as a means or a channel for God’s grace to flow into our lives. They put us in a place where God can more easily deal with us. They are not ends in themselves, but a means to an end, that of experiencing a life-changing relationship with God.

In this class we will take a fresh look at familiar disciplines like prayer and Scripture reading, and at less familiar disciplines like simplicity, silence, service, and spiritual friendship.

If you feel an ache to know Christ more deeply, or wish to have a desire for Christ awakened, or simply feel a little ‘stale’ in your walk with Christ, come. These ancient time-tested practices will carve out a path for a steady walk with the Triune God, if you dare walk it.

Each class will be relatively independent of the previous classes, so come even if you must miss some weeks. A deeper relationship with God and with His people awaits.

“Why Not Women?” By Loren Cunningham & David Joel Hamilton Facilitators: Colin Carbno & Marilyn Phillips Today - May 15, 9:30-10:30 a.m.

This interactive class is based on the above book, and the N.T. Scriptures it discusses. Both authors have extensive background in missions, and their passion for the gospel is evident from the opening page:

“I have a dream of a spiritual awakening sweeping the world through this emerging generation…As I envision this, I see every little girl growing up knowing she is…made in the image of God…and that she can fill all the potential He has put within her. I see the body of Christ recognizing leaders whom the Holy spirit has gifted, anointed and empowered without regard to race, colour or gender. This new generation…will take a fresh look at the Word of God, knowing that the Holy Spirit will never do anything that contradicts His Word. As this emerging generation studies the Bible free of cultural blinders, they will see that the Lord has always used both women and men to proclaim the Good News and to prophesy the Word of God to their generation.”

BAPTIST WORLD ALLIANCE (BWA) NEWS

The BWA reports that at least seven Baptists died in the bombinG that killed more than 70 people on Easter Sunday, March 27, in the city of Lahore in Pakistan. According to a BWA source in Lahore, 74 persons (including 39 children), 54 of them Christians, were among those killed by a Taliban suicide bomber at a park where Christians were celebrating after attending Easter Sunday services in their respective congregations.

Additional Background: Pakistan is a Muslim majority country of about 200 million people, of whom 2 million are Christians. The current Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif who is himself Muslim, leads a progressive government which has unblocked YouTube, initiated legistlation to criminalise child marriages, passed an act to protect women from violence and harrassment, and has announced its intention to make both Easter and Diwali (a Hindu religious festival) national holidays, having the same status as Muslim holy days. Targeting a Christian festival in the same area where the Prime Minister’s party has widespread voter support is widely seen as an attempt to intimidate the government and Prime Minister Sharif has been criticized and/or threatened by extremist groups for his government’s policies.

Pray: 1) The families of all the victims. 2) The safety of Christians and other religious minorities in Pakistan. 3) Our fellow followers of Jesus in Pakistan that they may have courage to continue to hear witness to Jesus. 4) The repeal of the “blasphemy law” (currently under review by the Supreme Court of Pakistan). This law prohibits blasphemy against any organized religion, but has almost invariably been emplyed against non-Muslims accused of blasphemy against Islam, with the law being so vague as to make almost any speech or action potentially an offence. Those who are accused are often subjected to harrassment, threats, and

Page 14: FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH A Place To Belongfirstbaptistregina.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/fbcbulletin_2016... · FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH A Place To Belong Sunday, April 10th, ... Lord,

13

attacks and are subject to immediate incarceration. Most accused are denied bail to forestall mob violence. Those who are aquitted of blasphemy usually go into hiding or leave Pakistan for their own safety. [The law remains of the books despite the fact that a 2014 poll of its readers by the Pakistani English-language newspaper, “The Nation”, showed that 68% believed the blasphemy law should be repealed].

ABOUT THE BAPTIST WORLD ALLIANCE

The Baptist World Alliance, founded in 1905, is a fellowship of 232 conventions and unions in 121 countries and territories comprising 40 million members in 177,000 churches. Its priorities are nurturing the passion for mission and evangelism; promoting worship, fellowship and unity; responding to people in need; defending human rights and justice; and advancing relevant theological reflection.

The Tuesday Night Together meal will be cooked by

John & Jean Hillmer. If you plan on attending the

meal and have not already signed up for it, please

call the office by end of day Monday so the Hillmer’s

know how many they are cooking for. Thank you!
