MATERIALS FOR FIREWORKS LAB• Bunsen burner• Wooden splints (9 per group)• 1.0 mol/L solutions of the following metal salts

• Lithium chloride• Barium chloride• Strontium chloride• Calcium chloride• Copper (II) chloride• Sodium chloride• Potassium chloride• Sodium chloride/potassium chloride mixture• An unknown metal chloride solution

• Test tubes (9 per group)• 1 beaker (per group)• Test tube rack

DATA AND OBSERVATIONS

• While doing an experiment, create a table in which you can collect your data.

• This table does not have to be the same as everyone else's, you can be original, whatever works for you.

• Remember to write your observations in complete sentences.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. Why do different metals have different characteristic flame test colors?2. Most salts contain a metal and a non-metal. Look at the compounds we

tested and determine whether it is the metal or the non-metal that is responsible for the color produced in the flame test for that salt. How can you be sure your answer is correct?

3. What color did the unknown produce in the flame? What was the unknown?

4. Why do the chemicals have to be heated in the flame before the colored light is emitted?

5. How do you think this process is helpful for the fireworks industry?
