A Greener Solution to EmergencyLightingThe FIREscape system is based on LED (Light Emitting Diode) solutions that consider the usefullife of the entire emergency light system, from its installation to the recycling of the equipment at theend of the life-cycle.

The FIREscape emergency light system uses fully recyclable materials that do not place anunnecessary burden on the environment. Due to their unique low-voltage solution, cabling costs arereduced by 60% during installation when compared to old central battery-based systems.

Due to their self-contained backup power source, the FIREscape lighting devices can usescreened, non-fire rated cabling, instead of heavy and costly fire resistant cabling reducing theinstallation costs associated with traditional emergency lighting systems.

The environmentally friendly values in the FIREscape emergency lighting system are specificallyevident in the energy costs and CO2e emissions, which are associated with using and maintaining thesystem.

The graph (right) compares theenergy consumption and CO2eemissions of emergency light systemsusing traditional mains-poweredfluorescent technology, a mains-powered LED equivalent and the low-voltage FIREscape system, onan annual basis in a 100-luminariesinstallation.

The FIREscape emergency lightsystem has also been designed, bearing operational safety and user-friendliness in mind. An internalcontrol system has been includedwithin the system. It constantlycontrols the condition of the lights’LEDs and batteries. If necessary, thesystem will provide specificinformation on the status, eitherlocally on a keypad or by representingit graphically at the control centre ofthe service provider using an IP orGSM network.

By using the optional PC-basedgraphical software, the luminairestatus information can be linked withfloor plans showing the alarmlocations.

Operational Reliability

Totally unique within the emergency lighting industry, the FIREscape luminaries are connected

using just a standard screened 1.5mm2 cable, which reduces installation costs traditionally associated

with emergency lighting systems. A fire-rated cable is not required because all FIREscape

luminaries are equipped with integral batteries allowing the luminaires to function even in situations

where the control panel becomes damaged or inoperable or the line cable is severed. The luminaire

batteries allow continual operation for up to 3 hours.

In this way the FIREscape emergency light system fulfils all major security light standards, such

as BS5622 for example. See our freely available “Guide to BS5266” booklet for more details on the

system design standard.

A Pioneer in Exit Lighting

FIREscape is an intelligent emergency light system. The emergency light cabling is installed

using the ‘tree structure’ method, which means that several ‘branches’ can be isolated from the main

cable for different floors and areas of a building. Due to its programmability, exit and route lights can

be freely installed anywhere on the line without having to group them into either exit or route lights.

The EL-2 control panel constantly monitors the condition of the luminaires and regularly performs the

periodical testing required by legislation.

6

System TopographyThe diagram below shows a typical multi-panel FIREscape installation. The two EL-2 controlpanels are networked and are controlled by EL-KP keypads. The diagram illustrates how the systemdoes not contain any mains wiring beyond the connection to the normal lighting circuit distributionboard via the EL-IO input/output module for monitoring purposes.

Quick and Easy InstallationInstaller-friendly emergency lights are literally fitted at the turn of a hand. The cabling and bases forthe luminaries can be installed in advance. The luminaires themselves can then be attached to thebases during the final phases of building construction. In this way, the units are protected fromconstruction-related dust, dirt, or damage.

7

Energy Consumption and CO2eEmissionsA FIREscape exit sign luminaire consumes less than 0.5W, including the power loss. A similar 8Wfluorescent light exit sign luminaire will consume approximately 12W. When compared to 230V LEDlights, FIREscape products save more than 50% of energy. The lower energy consumptiondirectly correlates with lower CO2e emissions. For example, replacing 100 230V fluorescent exitluminaries with FIREscape LED-based exit lights, CO2e emissions would be reduced by 2,100 KGannually.

The graph below shows a total cost of ownership comparison based on a 1000 luminaires, 80% non-maintained 20% maintained, emergency lighting system for manual-test, self-test and Hochiki’sFIREscape system, over a 10 year period.

Automatic MonitoringFIREscape luminaires use LEDs in order to generate the necessary illumination whilst using aslow a current as possible. Even at its highest, the LED current usage is only 80% of the recommendedcurrents of LED manufacturers. In this way, the light power consumption has been kept to a minimumand the overall life of the LED has been extended.

In the case of the EL-DL1, the use of several LEDs in each luminaire is also a safety factor, as even withthe malfunction of one LED, the unit will still illuminate. FIREscape luminaires have an automaticbrightness control and monitoring system, which will increase the brightness of the other LEDs, whena malfunction of one or more LEDs is detected.

8

System StructureFIREscape brings new technology with new opportunities and solutions for emergency exit lighting.

The core of the FIREscape emergency lighting system is the addressable EL-2 emergency light controlpanel. Altogether 127 exit signs and/or route lights can be connected to each of the two addressable linestotalling 254 devices per panel. Both exit signs and route lights utilise LED (Light Emitting Diode) technology, which guarantees around 10 years lifetime (for maintained devices). The unique ‘Flex-it’ hinge system in theexit signs allows both wall and ceiling mounting utilising the standard Hochiki sensor mounting base, YBN-R/3.

The system is controlled by the discreet EL-KP keypad which features an LCD graphic display. The keypaddisplay can show the address and area text of a device activated or in fault.

MaintenanceThe EN 50172 emergency lighting system standard hasplaced particular attention on the operationalcondition of emergency light systems. The systemshould be regularly tested once a month, as aminimum. TheEL-2 control panel continuously monitors and teststhe functionality of the system automatically.Information on completed tests is stored in thememory of the panel and test reports can be printed forend-user records. Malfunction/alarm information isdisplayed on the screen of the keypad.

CablingCabling of the FIREscape system is easily andquickly achieved using standard, screened cable. Fire-rated cable is not required because each luminaire onthe system contains an integrated rechargeable batterybackup. The system can be wired as a spur and exitlights can be connected in parallel without grouping.FIREscape allows the connection of the cabling toluminaire bases before installing the light units. Unitsare fitted to the base with a simple and fast ‘twist-fit’method, reducing installation time.

Control CentreAny fault information from the FIREscapeemergency light system can be displayed using theoptional EL-GRAPH graphic software which canshow actual building floor-plans with activated points. This software can allow the FIREscape emergencylighting system to be maintained from a controlroom/centre.

Page 9: FIREscape Catalogue - 1SS3 - May11 - 1f Layout 1 Catalogue.pdf · FIREscape is based around an addressable, emergency lighting control panel with battery back-up and features addressable,

9

GSMRemote control of the EL-2 emergency lightingsystem control panel is possible utilising the GSMalarm transfer unit. Fault data is easily transmitted toend user or service company GSM numbers. EachGSM number can be stored in an ‘alarm ring’ so thateach responsible person can be contacted in turn ifany others are unavailable.

Control StationFIREscape emergency lighting system alarm andfault data, can be linked to a graphics softwarepackage located in a control centre. The softwaredepicts the plan view of the building indicating bothalarm and fault states. By using the FIREscapeINSTALL program it is possible to monitor theemergency lighting system from a central controlstation.

10

The EL-2 emergency light control panel features two lines, each line canaccommodate 127 exit signs and/or route lights. The EL-2 supplies the operationalvoltage to the light units during normal conditions, whilst also completing thecontinuous testing and monitoring of the equipment on the system. All monitoredevent information is saved in the memory of the control panel, and this can beaccessed by a connected EL-KP key pad (see page 11).

NOTE: Must be used in conjunction with the EL-35V Transformer - see page 20.

Design Guide Non-MaintainedThe lighting only operateswhen the normal mains supplyfails (emergency lightingonly).

MaintainedThe lighting operates normallyand continues to operate whenthe normal mains supply fails(mains lighting and emergencylighting only).

Locating Luminaires - Points of Emphasis

Near StairsEach tread should receivedirect light from the installedemergency lightingluminaire(s), so that theminimum luminance on eachstair tread is 1 Lux.

Near Changes ofLevelSteps or other changes of levelshould receive direct lightfrom an emergency lightingluminaire.

At Each Change ofDirectionEmergency lighting luminairesshall be installed near eachchange of direction as well asnear each intersection ofcorridors on the designatedescape route.

Near Fire FightingEquipment andManual Call PointsWithin 2 metres of all firefighting and fire alarm callpoints an illuminance level of5 Lux is required. This wouldalso apply to a fire alarmcontrol panel on an escaperoute .

Outside and Near toEach Final ExitThe escape route outside ofthe final exit(s) to a place ofsafety shall be illuminated.

Near Each First AidPointThis is a requirement includedin BS 5266 part 7 1999,clause 4. All types of first aidpost including first aid roomsare to be illuminated to a levelof 5 Lux.

Exit DoorsEmergency lighting luminairesshall be installed (near) eachexit door to provideappropriate illuminance nearthe door and at the threshold. However, to provide the 1 Luxon the centre line, theluminaire may need to becloser than the 2msuggested in the diagram.

To Illuminate SafetySignsEmergency lighting luminairesshall be installed to illuminateeach escape sign and safetysign. For externallyilluminated sign boards, aluminaire should be within 2mof the sign. Any further than2m away would be unlikely toilluminate the signsufficiently.

Interpretation:Where a point of emphasis requires a luminaire to be "at", this is not always practical, because, for example, there might be another fitment alreadyat the same point. The luminaire would then be placed at a suitable position no further than 2m from the point of emphasis. Remember the 1 Luxalong the centre line of escape route corridors and stairways should be designed. Where a point of emphasis requires a luminaire to be "near", thisis stated as within 2m horizontally, as seen on a plan. Further information available in our Guide to BS5266 booklet
