AUDI-LARM AUDIBLE ALARM DISASSEMBLY

Only MSA-certified personnel may maintain and repair theapparatus. Use only replacement parts from MSA toassure proper performance. Thoroughly understand allinstructions, inspection procedures, cautions, andwarnings that pertain to the breathing apparatus.

Most repairs require standard tools. However, certainspecial tools, tapes, lubricants, and a tester from MSA arerequired. See the Required Tool List.

Follow maintenance procedures exactly. Deviation fromwritten repair procedures is unacceptable, unlessapproved by authorized MSA personnel.

Relieve all pressure from the system. Closethecylinder valve. Be sure that nothing blocks theregulator outlet. Open the bypass valve to releasetrapped air. Failure to follow this warning can result inserious personal injury or death.

Removing the Bell

1. Use a flat-blade screwdriver to remove the screws andlock-washers holding the bell to the Audi-Larmhousing.

2. Discard the screws andwashers.

Do not remove the bell from the alarm housing unlessthe bell is damaged. If the bell is damaged replace itwith a new bell. Failure to follow this warning canresult in serious personal injury or death.

Removing the Dust Cover

1. Use a 1/8” hex wrench to remove the screw.

Removing the Nipple O-Ring

1. Use the o-ring removaltool to remove theo-ring.

Note: Be careful not to scratch the o-ring groove.

2. Discard the o-ring

Removing the Coupling Nut1. Remove the nipple.

a. Secure the alarm body with a wrench or vise.

Note: Use protective sleeves on the jaws of the vise.

b.Use a 7/16” deep-well socket tounscrew the nipple.

c. Remove the nipple and coupling nut.

d.Remove the washer.

e. Clean Teflon tape residue from the thread.

Disassembling the Audi-Larm Audible Alarm

1. Remove the Audi-Larm coupling nut from the Audi-arm Audible Alarm.

2. Use a large flat-bladescrwdriver to removethe adjusting screw.

3. Remove the spring.

4. Use retaining-ringpliers to remove thering. Apply onlyenough pressure toremove the ring.

a. Discard the retaining ring.

5. Unscrew and removethe piston plug ando-ring.

a. Discard the o-ring.

6. Screw the extractiontool (P/N 482426) intothe back of the piston.

Be careful not to damage the piston valve seat on theopposite end of the piston.

7. Remove the piston bygently rocking andpulling the extractiontool.

8. Remove the extraction tool.9. Remove and discard piston o-ring and the piston plu10. Turn the alarm over to remove the striker and spring

from the alarm housing.11. Discard striker and valve pellet.

12. Remove and discardthe o-ring beneath thealarm housingshoulder.

13. Wipe all dirt and grease from the striker.

Removing the Relief Valve

If label on Relief Valve is missing or damaged, install anew Relief Valve. Failure to follow this warning canresult in serious personal injury or death.

1. Use an 11/16” wrenchto loosen and removethe relief valve.

2. Discard the o-ring.

Removing the Check Valve on a 3000 psi System

1. Use an 11/16” wrenchto unscrew the checkvalve.

Removing the Plug and Sintered Filter on a 3000 psiSystem

1. Use an 11/16” wrenchto unscrew and removethe plug.

2. Use a 3/8” nut driverto loosen and removethe filter and filterholder.

3. Discard the filter.

Be careful not to round hex head or snap off filterinside the alarm body.

Removing the URC Coupling

1. Place the Audi-Larm block in a vise.

Note: Use protective sleeves to avoid damaging theblock.

2. Use a 1” deep-well socket to loosen the URCAdapter from the alarm body.

REASSEMBLING THE AUDI-LARM AUDIBLE ALARM

Installing URC Adapter in the Alarm Body

Note: Ensure that the air mask passes annual and monthlytightness and function tests. See P/N10093079, FireHawk®

M7 and M7 Responder® Air Mask Maintenance andRepair: Introduction for instructions.

1. Install a new URC Adaptera. Secure the Audi-Larm body in a vise.

Note: Use protective sleeves to keep from damaging theblock.

2. Screw the coupling into the alarm body by hand.

3. Use a torque wrenchand 1” deep-wellsocket to tighten to70–75 ft lbs.

Installing the Plug and Sintered Filter on a 3000 psiSystemPlug P/N 10043943Filter P/N 476441Holder P/N 80495

1. With the filter flangedown, slide the non-threaded end of filterholder onto the filter.

2. Insert the filter andholder into a 3/16” nutdriver.

3. Insert the filter holder,filter, and nut driver intothe alarm plug port.

4. Finger tighten.

Note: To prevent over-tightening, use a nut driver, not asocket and ratchet wrench.

Do not over-tighten, round hex head, or snap filter offinside the alarm body.

5. Install a new plug and o-ring.a. Apply a small amount of Christo-Lube lubricant tothe o-ring.

6. Screw plug into the alarm body port and hand-tighten.Be careful not to cross-thread the plug.

7. Use a torque wrench and 11/16” socket to tighten to200-250 in lbs.

Installing the Check ValveP/N 10043945

1. Remove protective cap.2. Install the o-ring and back-up ring.

a. Apply a small amount of Christo-Lube lubricant tothe o-rings and back-up rings.

b. Protect the threadswith threadprotector, tape orpaper.

c. Slide the o-ring overthe thread.

3. Screw the check valve into the alarm body port andhand-tighten. Be careful not to cross-thread the checkvalve.

4. Use a torque wrenchand 11/16” socket totighten the check valveto 200-250 in lbs.

Installing the Relief Valve1. Remove the protective cap.2. Install a new o-ring

a. Apply a small amount of Christo-Lube lubricant tothe o-ring.

3. Screw the relief valve into the alarm body and handtighten.

4. Use a torque wrenchand 11/16” socket totighten the relief valveto 200-250 in lbs. 2216psig relief valve shown.See 3000 psigexploded view for 3000psig relief valvelocation)

Note: Be careful not to cross-thread the relief valve.

Reassembling the Audi-Larm Audible AlarmPiston Replacement Kit P/N 10090908Audi-Larm Audible Alarm Maintenance Kit P/N 10045831Striker Replacement Kit P/N 10044574

Note: Replace all o-rings. Reuse of o-rings is the mostfrequent cause of alarm malfunction. Apply a smallamount of Christo-Lube lubricant to each o-ring beforeinstalling.

1. Install the o-ring underthe shoulder inside thealarm housing. Use theo-ring removal tool topush the o-ring intoplace.

2. Apply a small amount of Silicone Lubricant (P/N494992) to the striker shaft.

3. Place the spring over the striker.

4. Insert the spring andstriker into the alarmhousing.

5. Ensure that the striker extends through the hole andcan touch the bell.

6. Install new o-rings on the piston and the piston plug.

7. Screw the plug into thepiston and tighten.

8. Apply a small amount of Christo-Lube lubricant to thebeveled shoulder of the piston assembly.

9. Insert the piston intothe alarm housing andpress it into place.

Note: Be careful not to damage the piston seat. Thestriker will extend through the forward hole toward thebell.

10. Use retaining-ringpliers to install the newretaining ring flat sideout.

Note: The ring must seatin the groove locatedabout 1/16" above thepiston. Use the o-ringremoval tool if necessaryto push the ring into thegroove. If the ring is bent,or does not fit tightly,replace it.

11. Apply a small amount of Christo-Lube lubricant toboth ends of the spring.

12. Insert the adjustingspring into the alarmhousing.

13. Insert the screw intothe alarm housing andtighten about 1-1/2turns.

14. Verify proper Audi-Larm operation by performing therequired ring-up, set point, and ring-down testsspecified in the Audi-Larm Audible Alarm Testing.

Note: After testing, place one drop of Loctite 222 on theadjusting screw threads.

15. Check the alarm for air leaks. See Leak Testing-Audi-Larm P/N 10093091).

1. Reinstall the Coupling Nut

a. Apply Teflon tape tothe nipple thread.

2. Apply a small amount of Christo-Lube lubricant to thenew washer.

3. Slide the new washeronto the threaded endof the nipple.

4. Slide the coupling nut onto the threaded end of thenipple.

a. Screw the couplingnut and nipple intothe Audi-Larm body.

b.Use a torque wrenchand 7/16” deep wellsocket to tighten thenipple to 25 ft lbs.

Do not over-tighten to prevent damage the Audi-Larmbody or the nipple thread.

Installing the Nipple O-RingP/N 10090910

Roll the new o-ring into thegroove until seated.

Note: An improperly seated o-ring can cause an air leak.

Installing the Dust CoverP/N 10090909

1. Insert screw with washer through tether into Audi-Larm body.

2. Tighten with a 1/8” hex wrench.

Installing the BellP/N 10090907

1. Align the bell with the boss on the alarm housing. Therim of the bell must not touch the alarm housing.

2. Remove residual Loctite thread locker.3. Apply one drop of Loctite 271 (P/N 26875) into each

hole.4. Insert screws with lock-washers (P/N 54197) into the

Audi-Larm body and tighten.

5. Ensure that the bell istight.

AUDI-LARM™ AUDIBLE ALARM TESTING

MSA recommends that C.A.R.E. facilities use theupgraded Biosystems PosiChek3 SCBA Test Benches totest Audi-Larm accuracy.

Upgrades to the PosiChek3 Machine are available throughBiosystems:54-21-A12 - EP (Enhanced Precision) Upgrade Only, and54-21-A13 - Sound Detection System Upgrade Only, and54-21-A14 - EP and Sound Detection System Upgrade

Combined.

MSA also authorizes the use of the Audi-Larm tester (P/N10045522) to evaluate the accuracy of the Audi-LarmAudible Alarm.

If upgrades have not been performed to theBiosystems PosiChek3 Test Bench, MSA requiresC.A.R.E. facilities to use the Audi-Larm Tester (P/N10045522) to check the accuracy of the Audi-LarmAudible Alarm during each flow test of the SCBA.Failure to follow this warning can cause Audi-Larmmalfunction, resulting in serious personal injury ordeath.

Try to hand tighten coupling nutfurther onto the cylinder valve. Ifthis is unsuccessful, the insert o-ring may need to be replaced.

Completely leak test all fittings onthe Audi-Larm assembly. Relievepressure, and then tighten ifnecessary.

Replace cylinder with a fullypressurized cylinder.

Overhaul Audi-Larm and replacepiston.

Replace coupling nut nipple O-ring.

Adjustment: Turn the adjustingscrew counter clockwise (out) 1/8turn. Retest the Audi-Larm.

Adjustment: Turn the adjustingscrew clockwise (in) 1/8 turn.Retest the Audi-Larm.

Overhaul Audi-Larm.

Overhaul Audi-Larm and replacepiston.

Note: If after performing the remedy, the Audi-Larm still does not perform properlyduring the Audi-Larm test, it must be replaced.
