Ergometrics’ Firefighter MILE is a physical ability test that simulates the physical duties required of firefighters during an emergency. It assesses an individual’s capacity to handle critical firefighter tasks in a safe and efficient manner, and to sustain the required effort for time periods required at an emergency. The Firefighter MILE was designed to incorporate realistic aerobic and anaerobic demands, allowing candidates the maximum opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities while working at a level of full physical effort for approximately 20 minutes.

The Firefighter MILE has the highest standards of defensibility. Extensive developmental research was conducted to identify the most critical firefighter tasks and the physiological demands required for each task. All events in the Firefighter MILE were carefully linked to these critical and limiting firefighter tasks. Additionally, the Firefighter MILE has been tested on hundreds of incumbent firefighters.

The Firefighter MILE is the only work simulation test validated with not just content validation, but with criterion-related validation. The Firefighter MILE predicts the physical ability of firefighters on-the-job and the likelihood of job related injuries. This ensures the test not only helps departments find physically fit candidates for the job, it also protects against litigation.

Easy course set upany gym-like setting can serve as a test location, and the test can be moved to different locations, as needed. Unlike comparable physical ability tests, the Firefighter MILE uses equipment and resources that are readily available in most fire departments, and some of the equipment can be easily constructed by incumbent firefighters. This helps limit the need to purchase costly physical ability course equipment.

required EquipmentThe equipment below is required for Firefighter MILE testing. Because the test was designed with transportability and low cost in mind, you may find that much of the equipment is readily available in a firehouse, and does not have to be purchased new. the costs listed below are estimates, and are based on purchasing the equipment new. all quantities assume the department will have up to four candidates on the course simultaneously.

optional servicesthe department can purchase an optional transportability study, which is strongly recommended. this includes a job analysis survey that is administered online to firefighter incumbents, and provides a survey of weights and forces of the tools and objects commonly used within the department. the transportability study will include a validation report verifying that the exam is appropriate for the department.

the department can choose to have an onsite implementation for Firefighter MILE. This consists of having a consultant provide a half day review and calibration of the course at the location of the testing facility. the consultant will provide onsite administration training and administrator practice.

pricing The pricing for Firefighter MILE is based on a one-time licensing fee that is determined by the size of department. the license fee allows the department permanent use of the Firefighter MILE Program, and includes the product manual, course construction specifications and diagrams, candidate handbook, candidate orientation video, and an ergometrics phone consultation.
