Smoking policy - Quiz

A young person aged 17 on a residential asks you to buy them some cigarettes. Should you:

 a) Tell them it’s illegal to buy cigarettes for anyone under 18

 b) Agree to buy them, it’s only illegal to buy cigarettes for under 16s

Smoke free policy Smoking is not permitted in any

enclosed or substantially enclosed Trust premises, or premises being used for Trust activities, including Trust vehicles.

Staff must not purchase tobacco or related products for young people under 18.

Staff must not offer/accept cigarettes to or from young people under the age of 18.

Where possible, under 18s should be encouraged not to smoke.

Where possible staff are not to smoke in front of young people.

Safeguarding scenarios

18 yr old female client who is a single parent said that during a discussion in the Team room with a staff member she disclosed that she and her child get lifts in a car from her father who sometimes drives under the influence of cannabis. She says that he has done this for years and he drives normally under the influence in her opinion.

A YP’s attendance and lateness to the programme, is starting to be a concern and it is noted that he isn’t looking after himself. When asked about his lateness he indicates that he has had to look after his 3 younger siblings, because his mother isn’t there at the moment.
