Smoking policy - Quiz

A young person aged 17 on a residential asks you to buy them some cigarettes. Should you:

 a) Tell them it’s illegal to buy cigarettes for anyone under 18

 b) Agree to buy them, it’s only illegal to buy cigarettes for under 16s

a) Tell them it’s illegal to buy cigarettes for anyone under 18

You are a smoker and are having a cigarette break on your own outside. A young person aged 16 joins you and asks you for a cigarette. Should you:

 a) Offer them a cigarette, you know they are a regular smoker

 b) Say you aren’t able to offer anyone under 18 a cigarette

 b) Say you aren’t able to offer anyone under 18 a cigarette

You find a group of young people aged under 18 smoking cigarettes during a programme break. Should you:

 a) Confiscate the cigarettes b) Join them and ask for a cigarette c) Leave them to it. If it’s appropriate,

encourage them not to smoke

Smoke free policy Smoking is not permitted in any

of any reports raised under their own local reporting system. If the concern or incident is:Directly linked to a live programme Involved existing programme participants,

including staff, secondees, volunteers, mentors

Required reporting to the relevant safeguarding authority/board

Required reporting on and involvement of the police

Issue that may have a reputational risk

The Trust will at all times treat reports as confidential and handle reports appropriately and securely. Providing this information plays a key role in helping The Trust to target their efforts in this area, and helps to ensure the right support is incorporated into programme design and guidance

Safeguarding scenarios

18 yr old female client who is a single parent said that during a discussion in the Team room with a staff member she disclosed that she and her child get lifts in a car from her father who sometimes drives under the influence of cannabis. She says that he has done this for years and he drives normally under the influence in her opinion.

A 16 year old girl tells you that she slept rough last night and is not going home tonight as her mum threw a chair at her yesterday during a family row.

During the course of a programme you hear from different YP that one of the boys on has been received numerous gifts from a group of older men. The YP is 14

You walk in on two young people having sex on residential. Both YP are considered to be vulnerable and are underage.

A YP’s attendance and lateness to the programme, is starting to be a concern and it is noted that he isn’t looking after himself. When asked about his lateness he indicates that he has had to look after his 3 younger siblings, because his mother isn’t there at the moment.
