Climate change has slipped into our day-to-day conversations and demands for mitigation are rising. Therefore, a wide range of measures to combat climate change are needed, as most of the greenhouse gases responsible for global warming come from energy production and consumption, as well as from transport.

At the end of 2019, Finland submitted its National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan to the European Commission including Finland's national targets and related actions to achieve the EU's energy and climate targets by 2030, which means a 55% tighten-ing of emission reduction targets compared to 1990. The gov-ernment program currently sets targets for Finland to be carbon neutral by 2035, which will be achieved by reducing emissions and strengthening carbon sinks. Finland is also aiming to be the world's first fossil-free society where electricity and heat produc-tion would cause near zero emissions by the end of the 2030s, also taking into account the security of the energy supply.

So, the targets are demanding, but on the other hand, nuclear energy offers many ways to achieve them. At this moment, over a third of all electricity in Finland is produced by nuclear power. Unlike many European countries, there are new nuclear power projects ongoing in Finland: TVO’s Olkiluoto 3 unit and Fenno-voima’s Hanhikivi 1 unit, which will increase the amount of CO2-free energy production in the future. There has also been a lot of debate related to the development of Small Modular Reactors (SMR), especially for heat production purposes.

In Finland, electricity has been produced by nuclear power for over 40 years. The capacity factors of the existing power plant units (TVO’s Olkiluoto 1&2 and Fortum’s Loviisa 1&2) have been very high (> 90%) compared to international levels. This is an indication of the long and reliable operation of the power plants, and also thanks to efficient maintenance and safety procedures as well as continuous improvements. For example, Olkiluoto 1’s output in 2019 (7.54 TWh) was the best ever in its history and in 2018 Olkiluoto units 1&2 units received an extension for their operating licenses to 2038, which means 60 years of opera-tion. Indeed, Finland is the leading country in many areas of the nuclear life cycle and is currently the most advanced actor in the disposal of spent nuclear fuel, for example. Systematic and re-sponsible work has also been done related to managing the low and intermediate level waste generated during the use of nuclear energy.

All the aforementioned actions have generated world-class ex-cellence in nuclear power companies as well as in their subcon-tracting network of SMEs, such as engineering and consulting firms, and partners such as inspection bodies, research centres, radiation safety authorities, and many different component and system suppliers. Fields of expertise include various business areas: plant operation, nuclear waste management, R&D, and new build projects. Many companies have gained solid refer-ences from Finnish nuclear projects enabling them also to take part in international nuclear projects.

Hand in hand with the increasing discussion about climate change, it seems that the acceptability of nuclear power is also gradually increasing too; nuclear energy can be seen as one of the solutions to the climate change issue. Furthermore, this is a global trend: dozens of new nuclear power plant units are cur-rently under construction, planned or proposed in different coun-tries' energy programs. In addition, numerous existing plants are being modernized and their service life has been extended. There is also a lot of activity within the decommissioning proj-ects of nuclear plants and research reactors and yet strategies and actions for nuclear waste management are lacking in many countries. Hence, there will definitely be a demand for various experts in nuclear energy projects for several decades, so let’s roll up our sleeves and get to work!
