DESCRIPTION

This is a pattern for a hat that is being made in coordination with a Kidshealth.org video for pre-school age children to explain what to expect from their cancer treatments. All are invited to make a hat and help! Details on where to send are included in the pattern.

Finn’s Hat!

Please join us in making hats that look just l ike Finn’s Hat for Kidshealth.org. These hats wil l go to young children, their sibl ing, classmates, famil ies and

anyone who wants to support a young chi ld through cancer treatment. We want these hats to look as similar to Finn’s as possible, so please keep to the same

colors and use the attached patterns only. We have included patterns for knitt ing in the round, flat knitt ing and loom knitt ing. The pattern is simple

enough for novice knitters.

Hats can also be mailed directly to Delaware Head Huggers, 202 Acorn Forest Drive, Felton, DE 19943. Please include your name, address and email address

so we can let you know that your hats arrived safely!

We are collecting hats of al l sizes, since these wil l be given to sibl ings and adult family members and friends as well as to the young chi ldren starting treatment.

The hat is basical ly a denim blue color with 2 green stripes. The greens are more of an aqua and sea foam than a Kelly green. I’ve checked some brands and have some options here. Any yarn in this color combination is acceptable, but please

choose SOFT feel ing yarn!

Finn’s Hat Pattern: Circular needles: Using worsted weight yarn and size 8 needles to fit toddler, (child, teen, adult) Cast on, using blue yarn: 64 (72, 80, 96), place marker and join, taking care not to twist stitches. Knit Brim using blue yarn: Row 1: *k2, p2*; repeat around Repeat Row 1 until piece is about 1 inch in length Switch to darker green yarn  and  knit  first  stripe:    Row  1:    knit  all  stitches  Repeat  Row  1  until  piece  is  about  2  inches  in  length    Switch  to  lighter  green  yarn  and  knit  second  stripe    Row  1:    knit  all  stitches  Repeat  Row  1  until  piece  is  about  3  inches  in  length    Switch  back  to  blue  yarn  and  knit  top  of  hat    Row  1:    knit  all  stitches  Repeat  Row  1  until  piece  is  about  5  (6,  6.5,  7)  inches  in  length    Crown  Decrease:    switch  to  dpns  when  needed    Row  1:    *k6,  k2tog*  ;  repeat  around  Row  2  and  ALL  even  rows:    knit  all  stitches  Row  3:      *k5,  k2tog*;  repeat  around  Row  5:      *k4,  k2tog*;  repeat  around  Row  7:      *k3,  k2tog*;  repeat  around  Row  9:      *k2,  k2tog*;  repeat  around Row  11:  *k1,  k2tog*;  repeat  around Row  13:    *k2tog*;  repeat  around    Finish:    Cut  working  yarn,  leaving  a  6-­‐inch  tail  and  draw  the  tail  through  the  remaining  stitches.    Cinch  tightly  and  weave  in  your  ends.    Send  this  hat  to  a  child  who  needs  it!        To  use  chunky  weight  yarn,  switch  to  size  10  circular  needles  and  cast  on:    48,  (56,  64,  72)    Work  pattern  as  written  to  crown  decrease.    Leave  out  the  even  number  rows  for  the  crown  decrease  for  chunky  weight  yarn.

Loom  Knit  Pattern    Use  2  strands  of  yarn  held  together  as  one.    E-­‐wrap  cast  on  with  blue  yarn    Work  k2,  p2  ribbing  for  about  one  inch    Switch  to  the  darker  green  yarn  and  e-­‐wrap  knit  for  another  inch    Switch  to  the  lighter  green  and  e-­‐wrap  knit  for  another  inch    Switch  back  to  the  blue  and  finish  the  hat    End  as  usual.
