To add a softly aged, antiqued look to your cabinetry, consider Glazing. To create the look, glaze material is flooded over the sur-face, then hand-wiped. A little bit of the material stays behind on flat surfaces, and more will “hang up” in corners and detail areas.

Glaze is often paired with Artisan distressing, as it settles into and accentuates the different marks. Glaze is fairly transparent, so a dark glaze on a light-colored stain or paint will be more noticeable than on a darker color.

Licorice Patina is a brushed-on glaze that creates a heavily antiqued appearance. The look is characterized by visible brush marks of varying intensity in the direction of the wood grain. Patina is often paired with a Sand-Through technique or Artisan package (or both).

Patina will settle into woods with open grain, such as Red Oak and Hickory, and accentuate the grain pattern.

Creating the soft, weathered look common to painted antiques, muted brown brush strokes are hand-applied in the direction of the wood grain. Character is added by slightly curved brush strokes, “cross-hatching” where the wood grain changes direction, and areas of lighter or heavier application. Antiqued is offered on painted finishes only.

Antiqued is a very subtle enhancement, and difficult to show properly in a photograph. As with all of our finishes, we recommend that you order a sample in the door styles, wood species, color and enhancement(s) you have chosen. It also helps when selecting countertops, tile, wall color, and other items for your new space!

To achieve this look, small specs of black stain are randomly sprayed on finished areas, so the density of spatter marks will vary from one piece to the next. Spatter may be combined with Glaze, Highlighting or Patina to further custom-ize the look. We think Spatter looks best on medium-colored stains that allow it to be a subtle, yet visible, enhancement.

All of our enhancements are applied by hand with a variety of tools and techniques, so each piece will vary in the amount, density and strength of each enhancement. There are a number of other factors that will also affect how each enhancement will look – the

door style, wood species, and stain or paint color, for instance. As not all enhancements are available on all doors, woods or colors, it is a good idea to ask your authorized distributor for assistance in creating the personalized look you are after.

Highlighting material is airbrushed directly into detailed areas of wood doors, fronts and mouldings, as well as Beaded Inset face frames. Because of the the controlled manner of application, Highlighting will not affect the overall finish color.

Sand-Through to Wood or ColorDesigned to depict long-term wear through the finish to the wood or paint below, our hand-applied Sand-Through treatments highlight the artistry of our finish technicians.

Sand-Through to Color (STTC, left) is available on Maple with selected stains below and any of our paint colors on top.

Our Burnished enhancement is often used on islands and range hoods to create an interesting focal point to the design. After the Ebony stain is applied, the surface is lightly sanded in random areas to reveal a glimpse of the natural wood underneath. Available on Maple, Rustic Maple and Red Oak.

Burnished Ebony

Sand-Through to Wood (STTW, below) is very popular with painted surfaces but is available with all of our stains and paints. All of our sanded enhance-ments receive the same durable finish as our standard finishes, and may be combined with many of our other dis-tressing and enhancement techniques.

Artisan & Standard Distressing

Chisel Marks• “V” shaped marks are

made at random angles

Screw Marks• Screw edges are pressed

into the surface (3/4" max.) at random angles

Dings• Dents and dings of random

size and shape are scattered across the surface

Cracks• Simulated stress or drying

cracks are located at the end of panels, stiles or rails

Worm Holes• 3-5 small, elliptical holes

mimic the timber worm

Worn Edges• Raised corners and edges

receive sanding, heavier at corners and inconsistent on different edges

Carved Edges• Random carving on interior

and exterior of stiles and rails, and on exposed edges of raised panels

Re-Sawn• Saw cuts run perpendicular to

grain direction of each part in an inconsistent pattern

Worm Hole Cluster• Large groups of worm

holes may spread across stiles and rails to panels

Scarring• Gouged areas are sized

and placed randomly across the entire door

Our unique packages of hand-applied distressing techniques simulate old world craftsmanship and vintage aging. To accentuate the distress marks, we recommend that Glazing, Patina or Antiquing be ordered with Artisan packages.

The amount, density and placement of the dif-ferent elements will vary from piece to piece, and will not be applied to backs of doors, face frames, interiors, mouldings, or other finished wood accessories. We think it’s a good idea to order a sample, so you can get an idea of what to expect from the package you choose.

Standard Distressing features randomly placed nicks and cuts to create a well-used look to the cabinetry. If you’re creating a furniture-look hutch with the feel of an antique, Standard Distressing pairs well with our Sand-Through enhancement to mimic years of handling . Ask your authorized distributor for more details.

Combining enhancements. Many of our enhancements can be combined to create truly unique looks. It’s also quite popular to combine different colors, each with their own set of enhancements, as seen in the photo below.
