FINGERPRINT AUTHENTICATION

Fingerprint AuthenticationIT’S NOT JUST FOR FORENSICS ANYMORE.

Fingerprint authentication is showing up in a big new way. Not just at enterprises and borders, but literally in the hands of everyday people. Consumer acceptance of biometrics continues to grow and the market increasingly finds new opportunities for this convenient and secure technology to be applied in innovative ways. While fingerprint authentication technology has great potential, there are some things to keep in mind and pitfalls to avoid if you want to apply it effectively. The subtleties of the major implementations (e.g. from Apple and Samsung), how fingerprint fits into your overall security landscape, and your target market’s ability (and willingness) to adopt this method of authentication should all be evaluated before putting finger to screen.

WHY SHOULD I USE FINGERPRINT FOR AUTHENTICATION?

Users love fingerprint authentication for its speed and convenience. Current consumer acceptance rates are at an all-time high — in a recent survey, 80% of participants indicated a willingness to use the technology for authentication in their day-to-day lives.

Adopting fingerprint authentication allows the unique opportunity to increase the security of your applications while at the same time improving the user experience and convenience with which your users can access the services your business provides.

WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW?

Not everyone has a fingerprint sensor on their phone. In fact, only a small percentage of the world’s smartphone users have access to the technology. Those numbers are sure to rise as fingerprint sensors are incorporated into newer smartphone models, but it will never be a ubiquitous mobile technology. And today’s fingerprint-capable smartphones go for premium prices.

In addition, a small segment of the population is incompatible with fingerprint authentication technology. Professionals like construction workers who have worn down their fingerprints over time, as well as members of certain demographic groups tend to have fine fingerprints that are more difficult to analyze. Other skeptics might be unsettled by the criminal stigma of providing fingerprint information.

And lastly, simply offering one method of authentication is bound to cause difficulties when environmental circumstances make that method difficult to pass. By offering a range of strong authentication mechanisms, you can employ a more agile approach, allowing the best authentication experience given the circumstances in which users may find themselves.

So, fingerprint authentication on its own should be considered a convenience. No single factor is currently sufficient for universal security. In addition to flexibility, higher risk transactions can

employ a multi-modal approach, leveraging a number of factors at once.

HOW CAN DAON HELP?Biometric industry experts

For consumers without a fingerprint sensor on their smartphone, the IdentityX platform offers Face, Voice and PIN options as alternatives. Users also have the ability to step-up authentication when needed for particularly risky mobile transactions.

Since 2010, Daon’s IdentityX platform has pioneered innovative methods for authentication that conveniently combine multiple identity factors to empower users to choose the factors that best meet their situational needs.

IdentityX’s fingerprint authentication already supports Apple Touch ID and compatible Samsung devices. Additionally, IdentityX builds upon the manufacturers’ capabilities with an additional cryptographic layer providing a richer overall security model.

The Daon team can help you navigate the myriad authentication technologies, including fingerprint, and implement the best approach to incorporate mobile biometric authentication into your business applications.

Furthermore, Daon always has its eye open for the next big thing in authentication and we will be your partner to make sure you’re ready and able to adopt it if you choose.
