Barolo and Piemonte

2013

“thrilling, utterly captivating wines that speak to the pedigree and class that are the signatures of the best Barolo vintages”

Antonio Galloni

In his recent report about Barolo 2013 wines, Antonio Galloni titled one section: “Why Today is a Great Time to Be Buying Piedmont Wines.” We would argue that it was a better time in the past few years as the Italians have now started to raise their prices in earnest. Nevertheless, Piemonte has enjoyed a string of good to great vintages and the wines, although more expensive, still provide value for fine wine better than any other region in the world. 2013 has produced stunning wines from a long, cool growing season ending in a late harvest. Warm but not excessively hot temperatures in the summer allowed a gradual ripening, most critically for the tannins, which is always a challenge with Nebbiolo. The result is a vintage with superb aromatics and silky tannins. And most importantly, this vintage has allowed each vineyard to express itself differently. You will be amazed by the terroir character of the different crus.

“A return to the classics. This vintage offers outstanding exuberance of fruit with noble tannins that drive an elegant and expansive mouthfeel.

If you love age-worthy Nebbiolo, then stock your cellar with 2013 Barolo.” Monica Larner

Interest in Piemonte has surged since the stellar 2010 vintage. As the demand increases, particularly for the top producers, the wines have become much more difficult to find in volume resulting in some being sold by the bottle rather than by the case. We are already seeing very strong demand for the 2013s, with top wines being hard to find worldwide. Some secondary market prices are soaring (just look at prices of 2010, or even 2011 and 2012 Rinaldi and Bartolo Mascarello).

We are certain that relatively well priced wines from some of the producers below will see prices increase over the next few vintages. It is useful to remember that the total production of these wines is quite small. The Cote de Nuits and Cote de Beaune yield 42 million bottles a year, while only 10 million bottles of Barolo are produced. The demand for the best producers in Burgundy has pushed prices up to often many hundreds and even thousands of euros per bottle. Only a handful of bottles of Barolo are sold at such prices, for the moment!

“over the last year in particular, many 2013’s have acquired a level of textural finesse

and grace that is truly remarkable.” Antonio Galloni

We urge all fine wine lovers to stock up on Piemonte wines as they will deliver incredible drinking pleasure at relatively affordable prices. This is likely to become more difficult every year with both the availability and pricing becoming more challenging. Please register your interest quickly to avoid disappointment. We will accommodate all those interested the best we can.

“Indeed the 2013s have a comparable structure to the excellent 2010 vintage, but the 2013s are overall more refined and focused as well as more consistent in quality.”

James Suckling Please note that both Giacomo Conterno and Bartolo Mascarello are not priced in this offer as allocations are not yet confirmed. We will be offering these later, most likely in October, so please register your interest with any other order. If you have any questions or would like recommendations, we are more than happy to discuss any wines from this region dear to our hearts. Cheers! Gilles, Tom & Marine

Giuseppe Rinaldi

“I do not believe any individual vineyard can perform well every year,

so blending different crus allows me to obtain a natural balance” Giuseppe Rinaldi

For all who bought Rinaldi in 2012 then you will be pleased to know that prices have risen sharply. Scores for the 2013 have greatly improved on last year’s which has spiked interest from Barolo collectors around the world. Allocations are more difficult than ever and sell out as soon as offered. We see these wines continuing to gain value, particularly with more great vintages to come in 2015 & 16 so you won’t want to miss out on your allocation this year! Prices are incredibly high compared to historically, but this is only going one way as demand is through the roof and production will not increase. The wines are gorgeous as ever, but you already knew that… We are offering by the bottle but will try and accommodate up to six per customer.

Barolo Brunate 2013 £260 – 75cl bottle £550 – Magnum Rinaldi's 2013 Barolo Brunate is dark, sensual and super-inviting. A wine of restraint, the 2013 is endowed with terrific depth and tons of personality. At the same time, the 2013 is not an explosive wine (like the 2010), but rather a Barolo that speaks to total finesse. Dark cherry, plum, lavender, menthol, violet and hard candy inflections give the 2013 much of its exceptional beauty and resonance. The wine's sheer inner sweetness makes it nearly impossible to put down the glass. 97+ Points, Antonio Galloni

Barolo Tre Tine 2013 £240 – 75cl bottle £525 – Magnum The 2013 Barolo Tre Tine is a super-classic, vibrant wine that bristles with energy. Lithe and gracious, but with terrific intensity, the 2013 is also surprisingly accessible for a young Rinaldi Barolo. Perhaps the 2013 will shut down in bottle, but today, it is all polish. Although quite classic in feel, the 2013 is a bit lower in acidity than the 2010 and is also not forbiddingly tannic, both of which add to its immense appeal today. Scents of lavender, menthol, licorice and sweet red cherry develop in the glass, adding to the wine's considerable appeal. Today, the 2013 is gorgeous. 96 Points, Antonio Galloni

G. B. Burlotto

“All of Burlotto's 2013 Barolos are exceptional”

Antonio Galloni, Vinous Founded in the early 19th century Giovanni Batista Burlotto almost single-handedly put Barolo on the international wine map. He entered his wines into competitions receiving many awards which was unheard of at the time earning him the distinguished title of ‘Il Commendatore’. The wines are some of the most spectacular in all of Piedmont. The jewel is Monvigliero, a legendary vineyard which produces wine of great individuality, full of charm and elegance and ageing potential. Now run by his great-great-grandson Fabio Allessandria his legacy lives on receiving 100 points for the first time.

Barolo Monvigliero 2013 £1000 – case/6 Burlotto's 2013 Barolo Monvigliero is simply magnificent. In many vintages, a young Monvigliero can come across as disjointed, especially in the aromatics and the pungent, savory notes can be overpowering. Not in 2013. All the elements are in perfect balance. A wine of soaring aromatic intensity, pedigree and class, the 2013 is thrilling from the very first taste. Rose petal, lavender, violet, spice, orange peel, white pepper and cinnamon are some of the many notes that infuse the super-expressive finish. All of Burlotto's 2013 Barolos are exceptional. But the Monvigliero, well, it enters the realm of the deeply moving. It is a wine that will leave readers weak at the knees. 100 points, Antonio Galloni

Barolo Cannubi 2013 £450 – case/6 The 2013 Barolo Cannubi is suave, silky and polished to the core. Dark red cherry, plum, smoke, licorice, lavender and wild flowers abound in a deep, pliant wine endowed with class and purity. Slightly darker bluish hues typical of cooler years are front and center. Generous and supple, with striking underlying structure and expressive floral notes, the Cannubi is a total knock-out. 97+ points, Antonio Galloni

Barolo Acclivi 2013 £325 – case/6 The 2013 Barolo Acclivi is another knockout from Burlotto. The Acclivi shows slightly red and purplish hued fruits, with lavender, mint, violet and spice that develop in the glass. The 2013 is naturally very tightly wound, but it offers superb freshness, along with a striking interplay of pliant fruit, lifted, floral-infused aromatics, and an acid/tannin profile that adds brightness throughout. Readers will have to be patient, but there is no rush. This is a fabulous Barolo in the making. 94 points, Antonio Galloni

Barolo 2013 £190 – case/6 Burlotto's 2013 Barolo is one of the very best wines in its price range and class. Orange peel, bright red stone fruit, mint, licorice and star anise give the 2013 its exotic aromatic profile. The tannins are incisive and piercing, but also very fine grained. Best of all, the 2013 will drink well with minimal cellaring while giving readers a terrific look at the vibrancy, energy and polish. There is so much to like here. Breri, which is a vineyard close to Monvigliero, is the core of the Barolo, while Rocco dell' Olmo and Neirane round out the blend. The 2013 is as good or better than many vineyard designate Barolos in this vintage. Don't miss it. 92 points, Antonio Galloni

Barbera d’Alba 2013 £90 – case/6 Burlotto's 2013 Barbera d'Alba, from parcels in Roddi and Verduno, is another absolutely delicious wine that won't break the bank. Sweet dark cherry, plum, spices and licorice meld together in a super-classic, powerful Barbera that will thrill readers who seek the best in traditionally made wines. The 2013 was aged in a 35HL cask. I prefer it to the richer, fleshier Barbera Aves. This is pure class. The Burlotto range holds several hidden gems. This is one of them. 93 points, Antonio Galloni

Barbera d’Alba Aves 2013 £125 – case/6 The old-vine 2013 Barbera d'Alba Aves is vinified along the same lines as the straight Barbera, but it is aged in a 5HL cask, which, alone with greater vine age, seems to bring out a richer, more overt expression of Barbera. Plum, black cherry incense and licorice open up into the powerful, textured finish. Both 2013 Barberas are striking. I have a slight preference for the straight Barbera. 92 points, Antonio Galloni

Langhe Nebbiolo 2015 £125 – case/6

Although Antonio Galloni seemingly forgot to taste this wine in this vintage, it is a gorgeous expression of Nebbiolo and not to be missed at this price.

The 2015 Langhe Nebbiolo is a refined and elegant expression that underlines a few basic truths about the Nebbiolo grape. It shows a luminous garnet color and delicate aromas that lift gently from the glass. Rose hip, violet, wild berry, tar and licorice are part of the pact. The mouthfeel shows tension and energy, but you also get a silky and long finish. 91 points, Monica Larner from The Wine Advocate

Special mixed cases of 6 straight from the cellar* 2 x Barolo Monvigliero 2013 – 100 pts 2 x Barolo Acclivi 2013 – 94 pts 2 x Barolo Acclivi 2012 – 93 pts £475 – case/6

We have a few specially made mixed cases from Burlotto, which include the soon to be legendary Barolo Monvigliero 2013. Call quickly if you want one.

Ceretto

“We believe in the land 100%, the winery is obviously important, but

great wines are made with great grapes."

The Ceretto brothers took over during the 1960s the winery that was founded by their father in the 1930s. They are somewhat controversial because they built a huge glass cube on top of one of the Langhe hills where their winery is located. They are also one of the largest landowners in the region with over 400 ha. However a small proportion of that is some single-vineyard Barolo which are consistently one of the best. Exquisite wines which we thought a few of you would want to try so we are offering here for the first time. Their other Barolo wines are also available on request, but these two are the jewels.

Barolo Bricco Rocche 2013 £900 – case/6 £1000 – case/3 Mags The 2013 Barolo Bricco Rocche is another magnificent wine from Ceretto. The interplay of aromatics, fruit and structure is simply dazzling. All of the perfume of Bricco Rocche comes through, but there is also more than enough acidity, structure and overall depth to provide for many years of exceptional drinking. Aromatic intensity, tension and layered fruit are some of the signatures. Wow! 96 points, Antonio Galloni

Barolo Brunate 2013 £485 – case/6 £500 – case/3 Mags £350 – Double Magnum Ceretto's 2013 Barolo Brunate is superb. Dark, sensual and inviting, but also super-refined, the 2013 possesses exceptional overall balance. Sweet cherry, kirsch, menthol, rose petal, blood orange, licorice, sage and herbs all grace the palate in this translucent, strikingly beautiful Barolo. All of the pedigree and class of Brunate comes through. This is a wine of remarkable grace and compelling beauty. 96 points, Antonio Galloni

Brovia

“The Brovia wines have often been outstanding, but over the last two decades or so, quality and consistency have both surged, placing this

small, family-run estate in the upper echelon of Barolo producers” Antonio Galloni, Vinous

A great opportunity here to buy some great wines across 4 different crus in 2013. This fully biodynamic estate makes some of the best wines in Piemonte, in very small volumes. Brovia will be the next name to gain investment status and prices will follow. Scores hitting the high 90’s not only emphasise the quality of the vintage but the continuing high level of consistency in the production of the wines. All crus are individual and offer loads of character and finesse, a great collection for any Piemonte collector. The 2013s were fermented in cement, with frequent pumpovers at the beginning and fewer towards the end of maceration, with a total of about 20 days on the skins. The Barolos are then moved in cask, where they spend the first year and half or so in Slavonian oak casks followed by a year in French oak casks.

Barolo Villero 2013 £350 – case/6 The 2013 Barolo Villero is magnificent. In fact, the 2013 may very well be the single most impressive young Brovia Villero I have tasted. Specifically, the flavors are vivid, delineated and wonderfully alive. The characteristic Villero spiced/balsamic notes are very much present. Black cherry, menthol, licorice, cloves and lavender infuse the impeccable, layered finish. Today, the Villero is explosive and showy. Readers will have to be patient. This is a fabulous showing. 96+ Points, Antonio Galloni,

Barolo Ca Mia 2013 £375 – case/6 The 2013 Barolo Brea Vigna Ca' Mia captures the essence of this striking hillside site. A host of lavender, violet, menthol, licorice and tar notes open up first. Wonderfully translucent and yet powerful, the 2013 bristles with energy and pure class. Here, too, the tannins are remarkably polished for a young Serralunga Barolo. Dense, dark and powerful, with nearly buried tannins, the 2013 Ca' Mia is a superb wine with a very bright future. 96 Points, Antonio Galloni

Barolo Rocche di Castiglione 2013 £360 – case/6 A real heat-turner, the 2013 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is powerful and surprisingly dense and rich. Sweet floral notes meld into a core of succulent red-fleshed fruit. This is a surprisingly ample, richly textured Rocche with huge density, creaminess and body, all qualities that are not often seen in Barolos from this site. There is a hint of Rocche sensuality in the glass, but the 2013 is holding quite a bit back in reserve. Sweet red cherry, pomegranate, mint, wild flowers and blood orange give the wine its distinctive signatures. Today, the 2013 impresses for its mid-palate depth, aromatic intensity and racy personality. Quite uncharacteristically, the Rocche is the least expressive of the single vineyard Barolos today. 97 Points, Antonio Galloni

Barolo Garblet Sue 2013 £275 – case/6 The 2013 Barolo Garblèt Sue' is another striking wine. In most vintages, the Garblèt is a bit nervous and compact, especially in the mid-palate, where the wine sometimes lacks depth, which, in turn, exposes the tannins. The 2013, on the other hand, is wonderfully full, luscious and textured, while expressing all the signatures that make wines from this site so special. There is plenty of tannin and drive to ensure many years of exceptional drinking. Scents of iron, smoke, herbs and licorice add the closing shades of nuances. What a gorgeous wine this is. 94 Points, Antonio Galloni

Barolo 2013 £185 – case/6 This is another great wine at a lower price point which should not be missed. Great drinking pleasure at an incredibly affordable price. Given the poise and complexity, it's hard to believe this is the firm's entry-level Barolo. It opens with alluring aromas of wild berry, forest floor, new leather, menthol and purple flower while the full-bodied palate delivers crushed raspberry, morello cherry, mint and star anise. Firm refined tannins and bright acidity give it a structured finesse as well as balance. 94 Points, Kerin O’Keefe Wine Enthusiast

Elio Grasso "Elio Grasso remains the most under-appreciated of Piemonte’s top

growers. Make no mistake these wines easily hold their own with the best from the region."

Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Elio Grasso had a hard upbringing because the current great times of Barolo have come after decades of hardship. When Elio took over the estate in 1978 he set about determinedly changing that way of life. Today he makes some of the most desirable wines in Piemonte. The approach in the cellars is one of cutting edge technology allied to the best of tradition. The result is dazzling Barolo of elegance, power and class. In 2012, Galloni scored these wines at the top, and the 2013’s are no different. They still offer great value as prices have not yet reached the heights of its superstar peers.

Barolo Gavarini Vigna Chiniera 2013 £290 – case/6 £100 - Magnum The 2013 Barolo Gavarini Chiniera is racy, exotic and super-elegant, with a finesse to tannins that is almost impossible to believe in a young Barolo. This is an especially delicate, refined style that shows just how elegant Nebbiolo can be. Sweet red cherry, kirsch, chalk, mint, white pepper and rose petals meld into a super expressive, inviting finish laced with veins of bright, salivating acidity. The 2013 gets better and better with time in the glass, but its finest drinking belongs to the future. 96 Points, Antonio Galloni

Barolo Ginestra Vigna Case Maté 2013 £290 – case/6 £100 - Magnum The 2013 Barolo Ginestra Casa Matè is powerful and intense, with huge beams of tannin underpinning the fruit. Black cherry, plum, violet, mint and licorice develop in the glass. Today, the 2013 is quite reticent, with tons of power in reserve, but all the elements are in the right place. Not surprisingly, the 2013 is a tightly wound ball of energy. Readers need to be patient. 96 Points, Antonio Galloni

Langhe Nebbiolo 2015 £95 – case/6 The Langhe Nebbiolo Gavarini from Grasso is always an overachiever. At this price you cannot go wrong for your daily Nebbiolo fix.

Giuseppe Mascarello

“These grapes in this vineyard were always the best

so in 1970 I decided for the first time to vinify them apart”

Monprivato in Castiglione Falletto is one of the top dozen or so vineyards in all Barolo. It is the monopole of the Mascarello family who acquired most of it in 1904 and over the years continued to purchase further parcels of it. They are the only producer to make and bottle Monprivato. The always popular Monprivato sells out quickly and even without this vintage being scored yet we anticipate this being one of the best vintages yet. The two other Barolos, Villero and Perno are not to be ignored. Very limited quantities.

Barolo Monprivato 2013 £500 – case/6

£225 – Magnum £450 – Double Magnum

Vietti

“Simply put, this is a magical set of new releases from Luca Currado, his wife, Elena Penna, and their talented team."

The Vietti family has been producing wines from the region since the 19th century and bottled it under their own name since 1919. They were the first to bottle the Barolos crus from single vineyards, something that has now become the norm like in Burgundy. Alfredo also was the one to bring back the nearly lost white variety of Arneis, of which their example is one of the best. They also make delicious Barbera, Nebbiolo, Dolcetto but their single vineyard Barolos remain very much in demand and the jewel in the crown. The estate was sold this year to an American investor, but Luca and his wife are still completely involved with the estate so hopefully the great quality will continue.

Barolo Lazzarito 2013 £700 – case/6 This tasting of the 2013 Barolo Lazzarito confirms just how far the wine has come along in recent vintages. Creamy, ample and potent, the 2013 offers an intriguing interplay of aromatics, fruit and structural underpinnings. Gravel, smoke, tar and dark fruit - all signatures of this Serralunga site - are front and center, but it is the wine's overall balance that is most impressive. Scorched earth, leather, smoke and graphite are some of the many notes that reapper on the finish. The 2013 is a real stunner. 96 Points, Antonio Galloni

Barolo Rocche di Castiglione 2013 £750 – case/6 The 2013 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is ample, generous and also surprisingly rich. The more intense, voluptuous side of Rocche comes through loud and clear. Even with all of its textural depth, the Rocche possesses superb aromatic intensity and nuance. The 2013 is an unusually rich, racy Rocche, with tons of mid-palate richness. In many vintages, the Rocche is open-knit and sensual, which gives it a certain amount of early accessibility. I don't see much of that in the 2013. Readers will have to be patient here. 97 Points, Antonio Galloni

Barolo Brunate 2013 £960 – case/6 Vietti's 2013 Barolo Brunate is one of the most reticent, powerful and explosive wines in the range. Huge beams of tannin give the wine its energy and overall shape. Readers will have to be especially patient with the 2013, as it is built for the long haul. As...in the very long haul. The gravitas and overall muscularity of Brunate is quite evident, but the wine remains raw, powerful and in need of significant bottle age. Today, the tannins are searing, which adds to the wine's brooding personality. This is the first vintage that includes old-vine fruit that used to go to Oberto and Marengo from a parcel Vietti acquired a few years ago. 96 Points, Antonio Galloni

Barolo Ravera 2013 £1050 – case/6 The 2013 Barolo Ravera is a real stunner. An exceptional, brilliant wine, the 2013 Barolo Ravera possesses breathtaking aromatics, translucent fruit and energy to burn. In 2013, the Ravera is dark and brooding, with fabulous intensity and the linear, focused precision that is the signature of this site in Novello. I have tasted and followed the 2013 Ravera for a number of years. It has never been anything less than thrilling. It is all that and more today. Readers who can find the 2013 should not hesitate, as it is tremendous. 100 Points, Antonio Galloni

Barolo Castiglione 2013 £195 – case/6 The 2013 Barolo Castiglione is rich, powerful and intense, especially for what is the estate's entry-level Barolo. Dark cherry, plum, spice, new leather and menthol are all used together. Intense and voluptuous, the Castiglione shows the richer, more intense side of the vintage. Time in the glass helps release the aromatics and the brighter side of Nebbiolo. Quite simply, the 2013 is a super Barolo Castiglione that is starting to close the qualitative gap with the single vineyard Barolos. 93+ Points, Antonio Galloni

Giacomo Conterno

“Give me great grapes and I’ll make great wine, even if I only have a plastic bucket” Roberto Conterno

One of the most famous and sought after wineries producing the mythical Monfortino and outstanding Barolo Francia and Ceretta as well as a noteworthy Barbera from the same vineyards as their Baroli. The Monfortino 2010 has garnered 100 points from Galloni, Monica Larner from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, James Suckling and a few others. It will be expensive, but you should still buy it. We will have this in October but let us know now with your order.

Barolo Barolo Riserva Monfortino 2010 TBA – case/6 TBA – Magnum

Every bit as magnificent as it has always been from cask, the 2010 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is utterly compelling. Captivating aromatics make a strong first impression. Nuanced and vivid on the palate, the 2010 Monfortino possesses remarkable finesse and power. Classic Monfortino notes of dried rose petal, leather, licorice and incense develop beautifully in the glass as the wine literally takes hold of all the senses. When it was in cask the 2010 was quite structured, but in two tastings after its recent bottling the 2010 has been much more elegant. At times, the 2010 reminds me of the 2004, with perhaps a bit less aromatic intensity but more structure. On paper the 2010 is very high in tannin, and yet that is not the way it feels at all, at least not at this point in its life. A vivid, thrilling wine, the 2010 will soon take its place among the greatest Monfortinos ever made. 100 Points, Antonio Galloni

Barolo Cerretta 2013 TBA – case/12 TBA – Magnum Tasted from barrel, the 2013 Barolo Cerretta, possesses serious tannic clout and structure underpinning the fruit. With time in the glass, the 2013 seems to become even more explosive, rich and deep. The breadth and expansiveness of Cerretta comes through loud and clear in a Barolo endowed with tremendous energy, soaring aromatics and enough pedigree to drink well for several decades. Readers should not plan on touching bottles anytime soon.94-97 Points, Antonio Galloni

Barbera d’Alba Cascina Francia 2015 TBA – case/12 TBA – case/6 Magnums Utterly magnificent in the glass, 2013 Barbera d’Alba Francia presents a rich, almost demi-glace like texture that envelops the palate. Sweet red cherry, pomegranate, hard candy, rose petal and wild flowers all flesh out effortlessly. The 2013 has the energy of a cool, late-ripening vintage, but with striking inner sweetness and depth. Elegant, restrained and sophisticated, the 2013 is another real gem from Roberto Conterno. This is just about as majestic as Barbera gets. 95 Points, Antonio Galloni

Barbera d’Alba Cerretta 2015 TBA – case/12 The 2013 Barbera d’Alba Cerretta is a touch more precise and linear than it often is, the signature of the cool year. Graphite and smoke notes appear first, followed by deeply expressive, pliant fruit notes that fill out the sides of the palate. The freshness and vibrancy of the year are the signatures, though, in an energetic, saline-infused Barbera that will drink well for a number of years. 94 Points, Antonio Galloni

Bartolo Mascarello

“Maria Teresa's 2013 Barolo is a stunning, drop-dead gorgeous

beauty. Vibrant, crystalline and exceptionally nuanced, the 2013 speaks to elegance above all else.”

Antonio Galloni, Vinous Maria Teresa Mascarello wines are simply a must buy this year like every year, simply stunning. In a vintage such as 2013 producing wines of finesse and elegance have only enhanced Maria’s natural ability to get incredible aromatics and bright concentration of fruit from the wine. A very complete wine from one of the most ‘in demand’ producers in Piemonte.

Barolo 2013 TBA – case/6

Maria Teresa's 2013 Barolo is a stunning, drop-dead gorgeous beauty. Vibrant, crystalline and exceptionally nuanced, the 2013 speaks to elegance above all else. There is an exotic quality to the aromatics that adds to the wine's total sense of seduction. As captivating as the 2013 is today, there is no shortage of underlying grip and structure. Dark cherry, plum, spice, menthol and licorice are some of the many notes that grace the palate. But the 2013 is a wine of completeness rather than elements. And the 2013 simply has it all. In 2013, Mascarello opted for short-ish fermentation with limited post-fermentation maceration because the skins were a bit fragile. The result is a delicate wine that shows just how finessed young Barolo can be. 98+ Points, Antonio Galloni

G.D Vajra

"By now I have run out of superlatives for Vajra.

Suffice it to say these are some of the finest, artisan wines being made in Piedmont today. My only regret is not having bought these wines more heavily in the past"

Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Founded in 1972 the 40+ hectare estate is now run by Aldo, son of Giuseppe Domenico. Aldo adheres to old-style methods which include ageing his Barolo for three and a half years in barrel before bottling. The soil here is rich in calcareous marl with rocky outcrops which give the wines a fragrant and longevity developing wonderful complexities.

Barolo Ravera 2013 £295 – case/6

The 2013 Barolo Ravera is tightly wound and austere, with tons of its energy in reserve. Lavender, violet, plum, spice and menthol are beautifully delineated throughout. In some vintages Ravera is explosive, but the 2013 is very much closed in on itself. Attractive scents of rose petal, mint, sweet red berries and chalk infuse the taut, salivating finish. My instincts say this is going to be a very special wine one day. 95+ Points, Antonio Galloni

Barolo Bricco delle Viole 2013 £330 – case/6

The 2013 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is a real head-turner. Sweet, perfumed, vivid and exceptionally beautiful, the 2013 is simply stunning. A wine of exceptional finesse and sensuality, the 2013 hits all the right notes. Today, the 2013 reminds me of the 2008, but with more depth, density and creaminess - especially through the middle - and slightly redder fruit tones. 97 Points, Antonio Galloni

Pio Cesare

One of the oldest properties in Piedmont with a history dating back to 1881

This historic winery makes Barolos straddling the two schools of tradionalists and modernists, with usually a bit more oak than we prefer. However the 2013s are great and will be enjoyable for years.

Barolo 2013 £198 – case/6

The Pio Cesare 2013 Barolo offers all of the plentiful qualities that make this such a memorable vintage. Because the growing season was slightly cooler compared to the two years preceding it, 2013 offers a great sense of freshness and brightness. Fruit was sourced from seven different vineyard sites (with much of it coming from Serralunga d'Alba). Starting in 2015, Monforte d'Alba fruit will be added. The tannins are tightly integrated within the firm fabric of the wine. Yet, the finish is round and supple. This Barolo offers characteristic aromas of wild berry, black truffle and cola. It is executed in a very traditional style with botte grande and a tiny part barrique to give the wine a tad more oxygen during its integration and aging process. 95 Points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

Barolo Ornato 2013 £390 – case/6 £795 – case/6 Magnums

This wine represents a slight stylistic departure compared to past editions. The 2013 Barolo Ornato sees fruit sourced from Serralunga d'Alba from a site that is known for its power and concentration. This wine's identity is tightly linked to the wide popularity of this more robust taste profile. Pio Cesare opted to use a little less barrique and more delicate punch downs instead of pump overs (that tend to increase tannins and bitterness). They have also opted to increase maceration times by a slight margin. The results are spectacular. This is a wine I have always admired and I'm pleased to say that it just got better. Dark fruit and plum segue to soft spice, leather and licorice. 95+ Points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

Palladino

Palladino is making small quantities of great Barolos from Serralunga D’Alba. If you haven’t tried them yet then you can stock up without regret. The wines from Serralunga are renowned to be powerful, muscular, complex and age-worthy Barolos. The brothers Palladino have remained under the radar for many years but their quiet dedication to tradition and respect for the vineyards allied to minimal invasive technology has produced a fine range of wines. These are hard to find but great value.

Barolo Ornato 2013 £195 – case/6 OWC £70 per Magnum OWC

This wine's rose petal, herb, dark spice and woodland berry aromas slowly take shape, along with a whiff of new leather. The full-bodied, energetic palate delivers juicy red cherry, cranberry, clove, cinnamon and orange peel flavors while youthfully austere tannins and vibrant acidity provide the framework. Drink 2023–2033. 93 Points, Kerin O’keefe, Wine Enthusiast

Barolo Parafada 2013 £190 – case/6 OWC £70 per Magnum OWC Aromas suggesting underbrush, aromatic herb, violet, new leather and earthy game follow through to the chewy, full-bodied palate in this wine, along with ripe black cherry and a hint of baking spice. It's structured and surprisingly accessible, with rounded, velvety tannins. Drink 2018–2028. 93 Points, Kerin O’keefe, Wine Enthusiast Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba 2013 £160 – case/6 The entry-level Barolo del Comune di Serralunga has been gaining favour with many a wine-bar in London as it delivers on is pop and pour quality at a great price.

Paitin

Giovanni and Silvano make wines that reflect the special terroir of Serra Boella and maintain the character of the grapes and the connection with the soil. Their work at Paitin is mostly dedicated to the vineyards with no herbicides, chemicals or fertilizers, and they are now fully biodynamic. Paitin are now one of the finest producers in the Barbaresco zone.

Barbaresco Sori Paitin is named after the eponymous vineyard which comprises 4 hectares enjoying southern exposure at 320 metre above sea level right in the heart of Serra Boella. Barbaresco Sori Paitin Vecchie Vigne is from a single hectare of 55 year old vines within Sori Paitin. It is only released in great years. In the lesser years it is used to bolster the straight cru Sori Paitin which makes it even more impressive.

Barbaresco, Sori Paitin 2013 £175 – case/6 £350 – case/6 Magnums The 2013 Barbaresco Sorì Paitin is pure class. Dark, mysterious and inviting, the 2013 is all about allure. Dark spices, menthol, sage, rosemary and dried flowers grace the palate in a dark, sumptuous Barbaresco endowed with class and personality. The 2013 had just been bottled at the time of my visit and is likely to require at least a few years to come together, which is quite typical for these wines. 93 Points, Antonio Galloni

Barbaresco, Serraboella 2013 £150 – case/6 The 2013 Barbaresco Serraboella is soft, open-knit and gracious, all qualities that will make it easy to drink and appreciate with minimal cellaring. Succulent red cherry, mint, white pepper and chalk make a positive first impression. Hints of rose petal, mint and cinnamon blend into the creamy finish. With air, the 2013 can be enjoyed now. The 2013 is an especially soft, forward Barbaresco for this district in Neive. 90 Points, Antonio Galloni

Barbaresco, Vecchie Vigne 2011 £280 – case/6 OWC £575 – case/6 Magnums The 2011 Barbaresco Sorì Paitin Vigne Vecchie is just as stunning as it has always been. A wine of extraordinary purity, the 2011 is laced with rose petals, spices, mint, sweet red berries. The balance of fruit, acidity and tannin is simply magnificent. At the same time, the power and breadth of Serraboella comes through in spades. 95 Points, Antonio Galloni

Paitin bring their exacting standards to the lesser wines in their range.

Incredible value here!

Cavallotto

“With oenologists the wine can be the same every year. We want the wine to be different every year”

Giuseppe Cavallotto

The reputation of Cavallotto centres on their monopoly hold of one of the greatest vineyards in Piemonte. Bricco Boschis lies immediately to the north of Monprivato, another equally famous vineyard. Bricco Boschis is a 25 hectare continuous slope of which Cavallotto cultivate 23 hectares – 13 are Nebbiolo, 2 are Barbera and 5 are Dolcetto and the remainder a divided between Chardonnay and Pinot Nero both of which are vinified white! You will find some of these other wines in Section 3.

Barolo Bricco Boschis 2013 £265 – case/6 Cavallotto is on a roll with some very impressive new releases. The 2013 Barolo Bricco Boschis is a tremendous effort that has an edge on the excellent 2010 vintage in my view. The wine shows a beautifully exuberant but elegant bouquet with the ethereal and undertone fruit and spice aromas you get with Nebbiolo. Although the wine is never overdone, it does show silky persistence and a long finish that comes from the noble nature of the tannins and the wine's textural finesse. Yet, it is playfully deceiving in a way because behind that polished grace, it delivers impressive depth and power. 96+ points, Monica Larner

Barolo Riserva Vignolo 2011 £395 – case/6 The 2011 Barolo Riserva Vignolo is a dark and succulent expression that showcases the characteristics of the warm vintage. The bouquet puts forth a compelling set of dark fruit characteristics with Morello cherry, dried blackberry, mocha and delicate accents of sweet spice. The vineyard team was careful to keep the clusters under the shade of the canopy for as long as possible during the summer months to prevent the grapes from ripening too fast or bleaching their colour pigments. The results are very nice indeed. 93 points, Monica Larner

Barolo Riserva Bricco Boscis, Vigna San Giuseppe 2011 £420 – case/6 The Cavallotto 2011 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe is an exceptional wine that really shows the best of Castiglione Falletto, home to some of Barolo's most consistent and age-worthy wines. This bottle offers enormous complexity coupled by power and linear, classic lines. Maceration stopped at 20 days, otherwise the winemaking team feared the results would be overdone and too bold. The bouquet opens quickly to reveal dark fruit, spice, anise seed and licorice. The effect is ethereal and lasting. It would be hard to pin this wine down as being from the warm 2011 vintage in a blind tasting. The acidity is fresh and nicely folded into the background. 95 points, Monica Larner

Chiara Boschis

This is a stellar set of wines from Chiara Boschis. The Barolo Via Nuova, now a blend of vineyards, is superb, while the Cannubi is one of the finest Barolos being made today from this fabled site. The only wine that is still finding its way is the Mosconi. The 2013’s were fermented in rotary tanks and aged in a combination of casks and smaller French oak barrels. Beginning with the 2014, the Mosconi is aged exclusively in French oak barrels, which Boschis believes is better suited to the personality of the site than cask.

Barolo Via Nuova 2013 £325 – case/6 The 2013 Barolo Via Nuova is the most tannic and explosive of these three Barolos. The flavors are dark, powerful and intense throughout. Beams of searing tannin and vibrant, pointed acidity wrap around the virile, imposing finish. Readers will have to be patient with the 2013, as it is likely to be slow to mature in bottle. Even so, the purity of the flavors and textures is compelling. 96 Points, Antonio Galloni

“This is one of the most refined and gracious of Chiara Boschis' 2013 Barolos and a very typical wine for the vintage. In a word: terrific! "

All my Cru Barolo are made identically so that the terroir Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Barolo Cannubi 2013 £400 – case/6 The 2013 Barolo Cannubi is silky, vibrant and wonderfully perfumed. Sweet floral notes, meld into a core of bright red cherry, mint, white pepper and white flowers. Aromatically precise and finely sculpted, the 2013 possesses superb balance. In 2013, the Cannubi is all class. This is one of the most refined and gracious of Chiara Boschis' 2013 Barolos and a very typical wine for the vintage. In a word: terrific! 96 Points, Antonio Galloni

Barolo Mosconi 2013 £350 – case/6 Dark, ample and inviting, the 2013 Barolo Mosconi shows the pure power and breadth that is so typical of this site. Black cherry, plum, mocha, smoke, tobacco and licorice are all fused together. The Mosconi presents an especially virile, baritone expression of Nebbiolo, with less finesse than is found in the estate's other Barolos. That said, there is quite a bit of polish to play off the natural richness of Mosconi. The 2013 is an especially refined, layered wine for this site. 94 Points, Antonio Galloni

Luciano Sandrone

“My blended Barolo becomes the most important bottling in average vintages”

Luciano Sandrone

Contrary to some of the names above, this is a recent winery only started 25 years ago. Luciano Sandrone graduated from agricultural college in 1973 and initially worked for the Giacomoo Borgogno company and then, after 5 years, left to join Marchesi di Barolo where he became cellar master and eventually left in 1990 to devote his energy full time to his own vineyards which he had been acquiring since 1978. In a generation he has established an enviable reputation and produces some of the most sought after Barolo in the entire denomination.

Barolo Le Vigne 2013 £175 – Magnum The Sandrone's 2013 Barolo Le Vigne is a real stunner. Powerful, ample and deep, the 2013 exudes class from start to finish. The addition of Serralunga fruit in the blend has added depth and structure in all of the wine's dimensions. Dark red cherry, plum, mint, rose petal, tar and licorice build into the huge, voluptuous finish. Readers who can find the 2013 should not hesitate, as it is outrageously beautiful and also one of the clear wines of the vintage. Vineyard sites are Baudana, Villero, Vignane and Merli. 98 Points, Antonio Galloni

Barolo Aleste 2013 £190 – Magnum The 2013 Barolo Aleste is a wine of striking purity and nuance. It is also one of the most finessed, vivid young Barolos I have ever tasted from Sandrone. The translucence of Nebbiolo comes through loud and clear. Freshly cut flowers, mint and finely cut fruit are some of the signatures. This wine has developed beautifully in recent vintages as the oak influence is less than it was just a few years ago. Beams of tannin and bright, salivating acidity add finesse to this translucent, exceptional Barolo. Aleste is the new name Sandrone is using for the Barolo formerly known as Cannubi Boschis. 97+ Points, Antonio Galloni

Paitin

Some of the best value drinking wines you will find, full of personality, depth of flavour and structure. Incredibly moreish. A late harvest in 2014 allowed a full ripeness and will be drinking early, ideal for your home cellar while you wait on the 2013’s.

Nebbiolo, Ca Veja 2014 Barbera Campolive 2014 £90 – case/6 £115 – case/6

Cavallotto

The Langhe Nebbiolo actually comes from their fabled Bricco Boschis vineyard so sourced from the young vines. In truth if it was given longer ageing in barrel it could be classified as Barolo. However you cannot conceal the class of this wine with its dense fruit and flowing smoothness.

Langhe Nebbiolo 2015 £195 – case/12 "Pinner" Pinot Nero in Bianco 2015 (White made from Pinot Noir!!) £65 – case/6

The wine has a lovely roundness in the mouth, fully framed by its typically bright acidity. The perfumes and flavours are toward peach-melon instead of the apple-citrus of cooler vintages. The finish is long and dry, with a final burst of acidity that keeps the wine fresh and lively.

Diego Morra

Diego Morra is little by little taking back his vines and crafting simple delicious wines. He is one of the only producers of Pelaverga di Verduno, an incredibly rare variety which makes peppered strawberry-tasting wines. This is a very refreshing and interesting wine. His Langhe Nebbiolo and Barolo Monvigliero are also great quality and one of the best value in Piemonte

Verduno Pelaverga 2016 Dolcetto d’Alba 2015 £120 – case/12 £100 – case/12

Langhe Nebbiolo 2014 £130 – case/12

Demarie Demarie is one of the best and most dynamic producers in the Roero region, where they make an age-worthy Nebbiolo-based red wine under the Roero D.O.C.G label. This is also the region where the best Arneis is made, and their example is refreshing and great value.
