Strawser Auctions Presents

Fine Majolica for the ConnoisseurNovember 22nd 2014, Alderfer Auction Center, Hatfield, PA

Michael G. Strawser, President of Strawser Auction Group and founder of the Majolica International Society together with the world’s Majolica authority Nicolaus Boston, are delighted to announce the date of their winter “Fine Majolica for the Connoisseur” auction.

With a combined majolica knowledge of over 70 years Michael and Nicolaus have sourced objects from all corners of the globe, hand choosing over 400 beautiful and rare pieces to be auctioned in Hatfield, Pennsylvania on November 22nd, 2014.

The exciting auction will be brimming with pieces produced by the great 19th century Majolica and Palissy manufacturers to include, Minton, Massier, George Jones, Avisseau, Wedgwood, Pinheiro, and many more including pieces sculpted and designed by the great 19th century sculptors and designers, Albert Carrier Bellouse, Paul Comolera, Christopher Dresser etc.

Michael had decided that the market was right for a ‘special’ Majolica auction, an auction of handpicked, rare, and interesting pieces with an emphasis on quality and condition, “That is what the current market demands in all spheres of the antique world, the rarest and the greatest quality. I thought it was time for Majolica Auctions to present an auction based on these principles”.

Nicolaus was delighted to learn of Michael’s plan, “I was thinking along the same lines when Michael gave me a call and asked whether I would consider assisting with the cataloging of this the auction and I had no hesitation in getting involved in such an exciting Majolica event.

We are especially excited to offer the extremely rare and charming, Minton mice cheese dish (only three known) from the George Jones ‘Continents’ Buffalo compote with a cobalt blue bowl representing ‘America” (only known example with cobalt bowl); an iconic Minton turquoise flat iron cat and mouse teapot (only known turquoise example); an excellent condition Wedgwood Mr. Punch cobalt punch bowl; an excellent example of the Minton double bunny tureen (Provenance Kay and CD Gann Collection - Atlanta, GA); a very rare George Jones turtle cuspidor (only known example); a wonderful Choisy Le Roi rooster clock signed Louis Carrier Bellousse; a magnificent and large Raphael Bordalo Pinheiro Palissy lobster basket plaque; a beautiful collection of Massier flower vases and wall pockets; a superb Minton turtle teapot plus many more rare items.

This special auction will also include pieces that are unmarked. Michael and Nicolaus have handpicked unmarked items based on rarity and quality, so there will be plenty for all collectors with various sized purses and passions.

Michael and Nicolaus are delighted to have been able to bring together so many rare pieces and never seen before items to auction. Michael says “This is going to be an exciting event for collectors, Museums and scholars, there has not been a Majolica Auction with so many interesting and varied pieces since the famous Marilyn Karmason Auction in October 2005”.

Full condition reports will be available on all items included in the auction so buyers can bid with confidence. The auction will take place in Hatfield, Pennsylvania with the items being displayed beautifully in Museum cabinets with both Michael and Nicolaus on hand to discuss each piece. Nicolaus will also be giving a lecture on the items in the auction during the viewing hours.

Please do save the date and come to the auction to buy, learn and enjoy. This will be an educational and fun Majolica experience, including an opportunity to add something wonderful to your collections.

We hope to see you all there! Please feel free to contact us with any questions.

Warmest regards, Michael and Nicolaus.

250. An extremely rare and important Monumental Minton Majolica exhibition ewer on stand c. 1860, 30”h. Provenance: Catherine Downing Collection. The stand with four smaller panels, two of Pan and a reclining bacchante, and two of elaborate trophies. This massive and ambitious ewer and stand is one of Minton’s most imposing exhibition pieces . Their form is here revived to demonstrate Minton’s excellence of design and command of the new ‘majolica’ glazes.
