Introducing the Lillian August CollectionExclusively at Le Dimora
Dear Readers,
With a busy spring season already underway, it is always a
privilege to be invited to various events around town; from fashion
shows to fundraisers, golf tournaments and wine tastings, there’s
always something to do. And while I most enjoy meeting you, our
readers, I also appreciate the opportunity to explore the various
parts of San Diego. So as we enter the warmer months of the year,
I implore you to seek out adventure in our own “backyard,” and
savor alfresco living in America’s FINEST City!
Over the next few months, expect to see new additions in our
editorial line-up. In expanding our editorial content offering and
direction, we hope you enjoy getting to know our contributing
writers and photographers, rising lifestyle trends in fashion and
technology, along with a few surprises here and there.
I’d like to personally thank Sandy Redman, Ramin
Pourteymour, Denise Hug and Phyllis Parrish for joining our
cover shoot for April. Shot on location at the Grand Del Mar in
Rancho Santa Fe, the cover is a prelude to The Arc of San Diego’s
upcoming “Jewels of San Diego” Gala on May 5. Returning with
a bold Moulin Rouge Cabaret experience for attendees, the much
anticipated spring event will raise much-needed funds for the Arc’s
annual programs. For more information about The Arc’s programs
and event details, please see pages 38 and 43.
Enjoy!

NEW IN TOWNGETTING TO KNOW SAN DIEGO’S LATEST ADDITIONS
Warren Sheets Design Masterminds Redesign ofLa Jolla’s Grande Colonial
The landmark Grande Colonial, celebrating its Centen-nial anniversary in 2013, has completed $500,000 renova-tion of the hotel’s entry and foyer, lobby and surrounding public spaces and three adjacent meeting rooms. Interior design was provided by Warren Sheets Design, Inc., a San Francisco-based architectural and interior design firm noted locally for their work on The Grand Del Mar resort. The 1913 Colonial-Revival style hotel now features elegant European-residential style interiors – done in what Sheets describes as “new traditional” – with a bold color palette and subtle contemporary nuances. “We wanted to speak to the hotel’s colorful past by creating a strong juxtaposition of old and new,” Sheets explained.Web: thegrandcolonial.com
San Diego’s Historic Gaslamp Recently Welcomed Red Light District’s Dining Room and Social House Concept
Red Light District’s menu, created by Executive Chef Ja-son Maitland, is inspired by old world comfort food with mod-ern French and Japanese influences. Items are hearth-style entrees that re-invent the local dining experience in down-town San Diego by bringing back local, sustainable comfort food. Eloquent service is modeled after European standards with tableside preparation of select menu items. In addition, specialty menus will change seasonally. So named after San Diego’s gaslamp district of the early 1900s, the restau-rant is located at 409 F Street in a 160-year-old building. Web: rldsd.com
Schubach Aviation Adds Hawker 800XP to FleetSchubach Aviation, San Diego’s largest air charter com-
pany, has augmented its fleet of corporate, luxury aircraft with a newly acquired Hawker 800XP. The aircraft is best suited for transcontinental flights to the East Coast, Canada
or Mexico, or for passengers wanting spacious cabin room for shorter-range trips. Featuring the largest cabin in the mid-size jet category, the Hawker 800XP can accommodate up to eight passengers.Web: schubachaviation.com
Headquartered in San Diego, Adaptive Market Space Brings New Online Auction for Adaptive Equipment
Adaptive Market, LLC works to help improve lives for individuals in the disabled community by providing an online market to buy and sell previously owned adaptive equip-ment. The site became a reality after realizing many people in the disabled community stored equipment they no longer needed and/or in cases where they did not have the means to purchase new equipment. With many failed attempts of selling online in other mainstream markets, it became clear that an online market focusing on people with disabilities and their needs is necessary.Web: adaptivemarketspace.com

birthplace of California. And while it is a
cornerstone destination for tourists and out-of-town

ever-popular ‘Gold’ or ‘Original Coyote’ Margaritas
never disappoint. As an Old Town favorite for the
past 20 years, Cafe Coyote has definitely made their
mark with a festive combination of live mariachis,
hand made tortillas and authentic menu selections;
the Langostino Taco was recently added to the line-
up, featuring corn tortillas stuffed with breaded and

A s the baseball season opens with great fan-
fare and new additions to the roster, is the
promotion of Josh Byrnes as the Padres’
general manager that has sparked much interest
and media buzz; waiting anxiously in anticipation
to see what the new frontman will bring. Lauded
by team Vice Chairman Jeff Moorad as a terrific
leader, Byrnes brings a confidence and boldness
to the role along with an 18-year career in Major
League Baseball that spans the Cleveland Indians,
the Boston Red Rox, the Colorado Rockies and the
Arizona Diamondbacks. In directing the overall
management of drafting, development, and the
team roster, Byrnes is in fact the ninth GM in
franchise history. Byrnes took the time to share with
FINE Magazine his vision for the future of the San
Diego Padres and their upcoming season, as well as
his personal thoughts on being in San Diego.
Q: Mr. Byrnes, please tell FINE Magazine and our
readers what you feel will be your main goals for
the San Diego Padres baseball organization; both
short-term and long-term, in guiding and leading
them into a championship position?
Josh Byrnes: We have worked very hard to build a
young talent base. Most baseball publications have
ranked our farm system number one in baseball or
near the top. Now that we have that foundation,
we need to have some patience to let the players
mature. As we grow into a more competitive team,
we will try to add the right pieces so that we truly
become a championship-caliber organization.
Q: What do you feel will be some of the challenges
and obstacles that the San Diego Padres will have
to overcome in order to achieve the results of these
goals?
Byrnes: Patience is one challenge. Any team trying

to win with a lower payroll must have a deep group
of young players on the roster. With youth comes
uncertainty. We need to monitor the progress of all
of our young players and determine when they can
contribute to a winning team.
Q: With all your knowledge and experience you
have attained in the world of professional baseball,
being involved in various organizations, how do
you see your task as being different in managing the
San Diego Padres now that you are more seasoned
and further advanced in your career, in where you
possess a culmination of understanding and know-
how to administer a team?
Byrnes: Many lessons from my time in Cleveland
(1994-1999) still apply. We will need to grow with
this core of players. I will need to determine when
to be patient and when to be aggressive. I would
like to think that my experience will help me make
those determinations. We have a great staff here
that provides valuable input on any decisions that
are made.
Q: What message would you like to convey to the
local fans of the Padres about what to look forward
to with the new management and the direction of
our team?
Byrnes: Every team wants young talent in their
organization. We have that. It has been proven
that a farm system this strong almost always leads
to success at the Major League level. We are very
optimistic about our future, and we are very hungry
to start our winning ways as soon as possible.
Q: How do you view the fans as well as the people
of San Diego in comparison to the other cities you
have been in?
Byrnes: I have found the fans in San Diego to be
very knowledgeable, very fair and very passionate.
“I have found the fans in San Diego to be very knowledgeable, very fair and very passionate. In general, the fans want to see a plan,” notes Padres GM Josh Byrnes. “They want to see a team that plays with passion. Most important, they want a championship. Our goals are the exact same.”

Q: When you have some downtime from baseball,
what are some of your favorite past-times and local
hotspots that you enjoy around San Diego?
Byrnes: With a young family, I have enjoyed the
typical San Diego spots (the beach, Sea World, etc.).
San Diego is my wife’s hometown, so she certainly
knows her way around better than I do.
Q: Lastly, on a personal note, you are originally
from the Washington, D.C. area and moved around
quite a bit with the different baseball organizations;
can you please tell our readers what you love the
most about being on the west coast in San Diego
and what do you miss most about being on the east
coast?
Byrnes: For the most part, the east coast has a
longer history than the west coast. As an example,
the Red Sox have a fan base that spans several
generations. When we won the World Series in
2004, I heard of many people going to grave sites
to tell deceased relatives that the 86-year drought
was finally over. There is a real sense of history and
a real sense of community in San Diego. Everybody
loves living [here] in San Diego, but there is also a
sense of community pride. Obviously, sports teams
are part of that community pride. We definitely feel
a responsibility to put the best possible team on the
field. f

The Jewels of San Diego Gala, a charity
benefitting The Arc of San Diego, originated
with the philanthropic generosity of Phyllis
and John Parrish in 2010 - a couple who moved to
San Diego 37 years ago from New Orleans. With
a strong passion to make a difference in the lives of
those who were less fortunate, the couple decided
to develop an alliance with The Arc of San Diego,
in helping the disabled community; due in part to
also having raised a son who had a disability. It is
through their commitment and desire to give back
that they organized a group of giving individuals
to progressively continue on with The Arc and its
mission to help those challenged with the disability
and their family members.
Currently in its third year, the Gala provides the
financial avenues to establish support systems and
programs to enhance and improve the day-to-day
lives of members within the disability community.
This year’s event will be a musical held at the
Grand Del Mar, and is being choreographed by TV
personality Mary Murphy and produced by Leonard
Simpsons’ There’s No Biz Like Show Biz. The evening
will feature the highly anticipated Moulin Rouge
Cabaret Show for guests to enjoy. Distinguished
Honorary and Committee Members will also be
honored for their loyal contributions in helping
The Arc further its mission to offer the gift of an
independent lifestyle.
“My vision and involvement for The Arc
with The Jewels of San Diego is to know that all
members of society with a disability, including my
son, will have the opportunity to lead a self-sufficient
lifestyle,” Phyllis Parrish expressed. “And, to have the
reassurance, as a mother, to know that individuals
like my son, who struggle with a disability will be
able to take care of themselves and lead successful
lives of their own someday.”

w e often take for granted the value of
being independent until it is taken away,
or may not even realize how much of a
privilege it is to have the personal freedom and means
to do things on our own. The Arc of San Diego strives
to assist individuals with disabilities, and continues to
provide the gift of helping those with disability-based
challenges achieve and maintain an independent
lifestyle. Due to the commitment and initiative of
forward-thinking advocates, the organization of The
Arc can be attributed to a group of concerned parents
and their vision of implementing various support
systems and providing resources for individuals with
disabilities. This movement was pursued further by
The Ocean Beach Junior Women’s Club, and by 1951
California’s Governor, Earl Warren, signed a bill,
offering Public Education Training for individuals
with learning and developmental disabilities; soon
after, The Society of Exceptional Children was
established.
In continuing with this cause, The Arc is
dedicated to promoting and attaining a healthy and
productive livelihood for the young as well as adults
with disabilities — both intellectually and physically.
In creating service programs within the community,
The Arc promotes awareness and offers outreach
support groups in fulfilling an integral role of
helping individuals and families overcome obstacles
encountered on a daily basis. This includes assisting
families to cope with the inherent-born disabilities

The Arc’s Jennifer Bates Navarra, Vice President
of Marketing, shares a moving story of one of their
volunteers, by the name of Meliha, who started
volunteering as a result of her sister’s support from
The Arc and how it impacted their family. The
assistance provided by The Arc gave Meliha and her
family the hope that her sister would have the means
to lead a normal and productive life. And, due to
The Arc’s tremendous support, empowering Meliha’s
sister to maintain an independent lifestyle, Meliha
had the urge to give back to the community and help
others in need. In November of 2011, Meliha began
donating her time by leading music classes at the
non-profit.
Other service programs of The Arc include:
• The Parent Infant Program: Focused on young
children from birth to 3 years of age, who are
considered “at risk” or have developmental
delayes. Its objective is to create a relaxed and
playful environment, while simultaneously
enhancing their motor, cognitive, and language
skills; as well as, encourage personal and social
interaction through specific self-help activities
by having speech therapists and behavioral
specialists involved with their progress.
The Arc of San Diego continues its mission to simply empower disabled individuals in
reaching their fullest level of independence through its many programs and very presence.

• Arc Community Employment Program:
Guides and offers employment opportunities
for individuals with disabilities. This service
allots professional advice on job placement
with various organizations throughout San
Diego, and assistance in writing resumes while
providing individualized coaching for the
interviewing process.
• Currently, The Arc is in the process of
implementing health and wellness programs in
fitness facilities, lending access to the disability
community to promote overall health through
nutrition and proper exercise.
In recognizing individuals with disabilities,
the month of March is officially commemorated
“Disability Awareness Month,” due to a
proclaimation by President Ronald Reagan in 1987.
In the declaration, our former president stated,
“For many of these people with developmental
disabilities, there is now the prospect of a brighter
future and greater opportunity. Americans are
becoming increasingly aware that such disabilities
need not keep individuals from realizing their full
potential in school, work, at home, [or] as members
of their families and their communities.”
Reagan’s powerful message affirms these values;
and The Arc of San Diego continues paving the
way for members of the disability community to
actualize their full capabilities. Last year, The Arc
celebrated their 60th year of service, and along
with their continued efforts of initiating programs
for individuals with disabilities, the non-profit
keeps the heartfelt mission from a group of Ocean
Beach women alive by laying the foundation for the
disability community to excel, prosper, and lead
successful lives in becoming independent. F

LOVEby Design
A s a matchmaker and relationship
coach, I provide insight and advice
to many single professionals seek-
ing love. So if you’re ready to take your “me” to a
“we”, here are some quick tips for making it happen:
1. Get crystal clear on what you are looking for.
Who you choose shapes your destiny! Know
your own core values and make sure they align
with the people you date. This is a MUST for
successful long-term relationships. Use your
head AND your heart!
2. Be grateful for the all the wrong people you’ve
dated. Appreciate the lessons, notice your
patterns, and don’t keep making the same
mistakes. Evolve. When you meet “The One”,
you’ll understand why none of the others have
worked out.
3. Be your best self so you can attract the
best! When you are whole and happy, you will
fi nd a love that compliments you, not completes
you. Complete yourself. When you have self-
esteem and “a life”, you won’t make someone
else responsible for your happiness or respon-
sible for your pain.
4. Design a plan and TAKE ACTION! Every time
you get out of the house is a dating opportu-
nity. Take risks, try new things. And when your
current plan doesn’t work, rather than getting
discouraged, change your approach! Dedicate
yourself to fi nding love. It’s worth it!

Home to San Diego, Shea Chic Boutique — offering all-natural lotions, creams, candles, and bath products — has become one of the fastest growing brands in the region, boasting a 300 percent growth spurt in the past year and a half. With an ever-present tenacious spirit, Founder April Leffingwell has created quite the buzz from Hollywood to New York; not to mention a true California luxury.
HOW IT ALL BEGAN
Born out of illness, craftswoman of ‘all
things fragrant’, April Leffingwell began
Shea Chic nearly by accident. “I simply
couldn’t get out of bed one day,” she explains. April
found herself homebound due to a degenerative
spinal condition that kept her in bed for nearly
six months. Trapped and forgoing a robust career
in radio, she was used to the simple pleasures of
perfumes, creams and soaps which, ironically, were
to begin a therapeutic value soon enough.
As her husband began bringing scented treasures
home to lift her spirits, an idea began to emerge
in April’s mind about making soaps and creams
of her own. Some of her research revealed harsh
chemicals present in one of her previously favorite
products, and ultimately, April decided to seek out
only natural ingredients for her own creations.
After recovering some mobility, she began making
products, and after sharing some of her soaps and
creams with friends, an inspired enterprise was
born.
WHAT IS IN A PRODUCT – SHEA STyLE
Using Shea Butter as a foundation with its healthy
cellular-invigorating and moisturizing properties,
April began experimenting with all kinds of scents
to create designer-inspired fragrances that she

loved. As a fatty nut grown in Africa, Shea Butter
contains vitamins A and E and has antimicrobial
and anti-inflammatory qualities. In addition, it
protects against harmful UV rays and is effective in
ameliorating some skin disorders like eczema and
psoriasis, among others.
In addition, Shea Butter’s rich moisture melts
into the skin and with April’s deft hand at fragrance
combinations, it is easy to see how the business has
skyrocketed so quickly. “One customer told me
she is addicted to the Goddess cream,” says April,
smiling. It is almost as if you want to keep applying
it because of how silky your skin feels and how
tantalizing it smells.
Currently, Shea Chic boasts more than 90
products of creams, soaps, bath salts and bombs,
candles and lip balms for women; there is also a
line of soaps, creams, and fragrances for men as
well, with a shave cream in early testing. Even more
so, the company has grown 300 percent since its
inception in August 2010. Remarkably, Shea Chic
has provided products in gift bags at the Emmys,
American Music Awards, Golden Globes and the
Oscars this year alone, a stunning accomplishment
for any company so new to the market.
Finally, Shea Chic’s fresh fragrances and product
names are evocative of the Southern California
culture and lifestyle: names like Surfer Girl,
Bite Me and Zen, to name a few. In fact, April’s
hope is to make Shea Chic a ‘must buy’ item for
California natives and visitors alike. “It’s all about
the experience of pampering yourself,” she says.
“Someday I hope the Shea Chic name becomes
a ‘must take away’ thing for people after visiting
California.” With such a meteoric rise and over 300
celebrity endorsements on record, that day could
come quite soon indeed. F

S ince beginning my journey on “The
Biggest Loser” nearly three years ago, I
have learned many things; some good, and
some, not so good. I am on a mission to share with
anyone who will listen to what I have experienced
so they may glean from my successes and steer
clear of my mistakes. Anyone who is on a journey
to health and wellness will know that there is always
ups and downs, and always a lesson to be learned.
Let us start with the good stuff:
Wellness Rule # 1: Only YOU Can do it For You
I get messages, posts, and emails daily asking
to “help motivate me” in their plight. I have some
bad news: I can’t. Motivation comes from within
yourself; you have to find the reason that gets you
up out of bed every day willing to do whatever it
takes to shake the unhealthy shell you live in and
do something for yourself. Your reasons should not
be someone or anything temporary; if they are, you
will fail when faced with pain or fatigue.
Wellness Rule # 2: Eat Lean, Clean, and Green
Ask yourself the following types of questions
when food shopping: is my food “clean?”; is my food
colorful?; can I pronounce all of the ingredients in
the product? If you do not know what an ingredient
looks like, do not eat it! Try this: stick to items with
seven or less ingredients; has a mom; or grew in the
ground, on the ground, in a tree or on a vine.
These rules should help you as you are
making your decisions on what to eat. Remember
QUALITY OVER QUANTITY and you will find
yourself eating less because your body gets what it
needs; you will stay fuller longer and your body will
detox any unhealthy foods, and you will start to see
and feel changes in your mood as well as your body!

And now for the not so good stuff that I hope all
of you will avoid as you seek your own health.
The Seven DeaDly SinS of WeighT loSS:
1. Not Measuring: Measuring your food may
seem like a really small thing, and it is. However the
consequence of NOT doing it is no small thing! For
me, I did it so much that I got into a groove; there
were times when a measuring cup is not handy, but
I thought when you measure 95 percent of the time
your eyeball measuring is not too far off from the
truth. But when you get used to not measuring and
that 95 percent becomes 5 percent of the time, your
eyeballs get bigger, and bigger. Pretty soon your
“cup” runneth over.
2. Taking a Break: A great person, who meant
well, and had very great intentions, gave me some
really bad advice; they advised me to take a break
to give my body a few weeks to heal from all the
intense workout sessions and losing 225 pounds.
Believe me, those words were honey to my ears
and I gladly welcomed a day where my body did
not ache. But what I should have done was slow
down. By taking a break it lead to sedentary hours
and that led back to old habits which led to longer
breaks, and eventually weight began to creep back
on. When I decided I had enough of a break, it was
devastatingly hard to get back into the groove.
3. Not Journaling: After leaving “The Biggest
Loser,” I was no longer hounded until I got my
journals in. When I took my “break,” I also took
a break from journaling. Journaling is one of the
easiest ways to get a grip on what is going in your
body and what activity you are putting out. If you
are a writer and you like to set goals, try FitBook. If

1. not measuring
2. Taking a break
3. not journaling
4. not listening to your body
5. doing it on your own
6. Caring only what others think
7. Becoming apathetic
FiNesd.com 61
you are a techie, download an app like “My Fitness
Pal” or “Lose It.” Or if you are a minimalist, get a
notebook and start tracking.
4. Not Listening to Your Body: During my
Biggest Loser stint, I was offered to run a marathon;
I jumped at the opportunity because it was a way
to challenge myself and have a short term goal
that would require training to help keep me on
track. Throughout the show I had chronic knee pain
and had been told by a doctor that my orthopedic
structure (bones) was not that of a runner; as a
result, running a marathon would not be in my best
interest. Well, I am stubborn and wanted to prove
everyone wrong. A month out from the marathon I
was running up to 13 miles. In training, I tore the
meniscuses in my knee; and it was devastating. I
was not able to run the marathon and the injury led
to an ACL tear in the other knee. When you have
an injury and it is screaming at you, listen.
5. Doing it on Your Own: This is a mistake
that I have often made in many areas of my life.
I stopped reaching out to others, including my
Biggest Loser family and friends. I decided that I
needed to walk this walk alone and that I needed to
figure everything out before I reached out. Boy was
I wrong. By doing this, I cut-off accountability and
I cut-off people who understood what I was facing.
Accountability is one of the most important things
you can have in your journey.
6. Caring Only What Others Think: As I
started slipping into my dark hole, I stopped going
to events, even with my personal friends and family;
I couldn’t face anyone because I was terrified to let
people down or disappoint others. I did not want
anyone to know I was a failure. When you begin
to compare yourself and worry about what others
think, you WILL NEVER MEASURE UP, YOU
WILL NEVER BE GOOD ENOUGH. A journey
of weight loss and wellbeing is a personal journey;
and while you may run with others, no one runs
for you.
7. Becoming Apathetic: I just went into autopilot
mode, delved into my work and started focusing on
everything but my health. I still worked out and
some of the healthy habits I had started, remained.
But I let whatever I could fall in the way of me
focusing on my health.
I share these with all of you because if you can
relate then you know you are not alone. If you
can’t, then hopefully you can avoid it all together.
Health has no normal, so get out there and start to
make some changes. f

S urfing, like dancing, falls into the rare
category of performable activities which
can be considered primarily both a sport
and an art. A football player is not judged by how
gracefully he tackles another man to the ground,
and there is no marketable value in the underlying
aesthetic of a batter’s swing; but with surfing,
the manufactured ease of a long barrel ride, or
the beauty of a drawn-out bottom turn reflect a
mastery over wave and equipment that only the
best surfers can call their own. What generally goes
unsaid, though, is how so much of that grace and
ease of movement is made possible by the unsung
architects of the surfing experience.
Tim Bessell is one of the world’s most renowned
shapers. With over 46,000 surfboards shaped, and
a career spanning 40 years, his experience is almost
unparalleled within the industry.
Having started surfing at an early age, Bessell
was already hunched over foam decks in his garage
and shaping by his thirteenth year, and working as
a professional in the Sunset Surfboard shop by age
15 — by which time he had already shaped 200
boards. Soon after that he moved to Hawaii to shape
for one of the worlds pre-eminent manufacturers,
Lightning Surfboards, and was humbled at how
much he had left to learn. “After 500 surfboards I
thought I was [at the top of my game]; after 5,000
I realized I didn’t know anything, and now after
about 40,000, I feel like I am finally comfortable.”
Bessell will be quick to tell you that there is much
more to shaping than just a simple understanding
of board mechanics. With a long background in the
arts and architecture, he cannot help but think of
shaping in a more dynamic light.
“Surfing is both an art and a science,” he
explains. “You’ve got to know about hydrodynamics,
but you’ve also got to have an understanding of
form and aesthetic.” Both aspects of design must
be employed because, in Bessell’s words, “the end
result of every design is the experience a surfer has
at the end of it, riding a wave.”

Recently, Bessell has made another stab at
blurring the borders between shaping and art. With
the acquisition of a license to portray images from
postmodernist legend Andy Warhol, he has decided
to push forward on a line of boards decorated with
pieces from the Warhol collection. For Bessell, this
is “a dream come true,” so if on your next ocean
adventure you see a surfer emerging from under
the lip riding a six foot thruster plastered with
pictures of Campbell’s soup cans, you can know
that somewhere out there in the world, Tim Bessell
is smiling.
Within the surfing community, Bessell has made
a reputation for himself as a renaissance man of the
sea. With his hands now in furniture design, gallery
art, and the conversion of shipping containers
into homes, you cannot go far in this town without
running into one Bessell project or another, and
that is most certainly a good thing. f
