Asylum By Penitentiary Officials Hiram C Powers who was tried for the murder of Fitzhugh Ren frow in the Circuit Court here last August and sentpnced to twentvone years in the State prisonwas taken to the Eddy ville penitentiary last Friday by Sheriff R B Martin and turned over to the proper authorities Immediately after Sheriff Martin had turned Powers over to the pris on officials and taken their receipt for him a deputy Sheriff executed a lunacy warrant on Powers and an inquest into his sanity was held the HofLyon ed and after hearing tne evidence offered by attorneys representing Powers a verdict < o the effect that ho is of unsound mind was returned Powers was later transferred to the Hopkinsville asylum where he will probably become a pet of the officials in charge who is reported to have done much to defeat the ends of jus ¬ tice in the matter It is the general opinion that Powers will remain quietly at Hop ¬ kinsville for a few short months then like Warrencr the murderer of Pulaski Leeds steal gently away never to be heard of again while poor Fitzhugh Renfrow yet sleeps the long sleep of death to which Powers resigned him on the 31st day of March 1905 Home Coming Week distance from here on the L and N railroad waslcriminally Harrison Alexander eighteen years oldut this place The affair occurr ¬ ed at the old camp meeting ground on the road between Central City and itevfer and the negro was arrested here at the carnival on Saturday nifcht Mrs Whitehouse is an imbecile the wife George Whitehouse who ran off about tvo years ago with an ¬ other woman Joe Doolan another negro was arrested at the same time as was Alexander but the former claims that he fought the latter in defense of the woman and his story is corroberated by Mrs Whitehouse Alexander claims that both negroes are guilty She was attacked in the public road and pulled seventy yards to the brush and after committing the crime Alexander endeavored to pull her tongue out to prevent her tell ¬ ingThe negro has been arrested and takento the county jail at Greenville and the officers will watch for evi ¬ dence of mob violence and place an extra guard about the jail This is not the first time the Alexander ne- gro has been in trouble and it is feared he will have serious trouble this time The woman is in a criti ¬ cal condition- A crowd of 200 citizens from over the entire county went to Green ¬ ville Tuesday morning and demand edof the jailertlwnecro The mob was quiet and orderly but very determined and jt was on- ly ¬ when the leaders had been taken over the entire jail that they Todd county out of reach of a possible mob This precaution alone saved the negros life 1 George R Henry Dead George H Henry exsheriff of McLean county and one of the most highly respected citizens of
