Christopher Smith (1953 - 2016) was a NIDA trained theatre designer who worked in Brisbane for over thirty years. He was a curator and exhibition designer at the QPAC Museum and Tony Gould Gallery at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre for over twenty years. His flamboyant imagination influenced numerous productions for theatre, ballet and opera and his library reflects his inspiration and influences. One senses from the books he left behind his deep love of and appetite for art, design, illustration, architecture, theatre history, and his sense of humour. We’ve started our cataloguing by choosing Chris’s micro-collection of Alice in Wonderland material, which includes several different illustrated editions, annotated editions, the Alice in Wonderland Tarot Deck and Alice 125, a collection of Australian artists chosen in 1990 to celebrate the 125th anniversary of Lewis Carroll’s enduring classic (Christopher himself is featured in Alice 125 on p.97, as shown above).
