FINDING SHEET MUSIC

3

Important things to know:

Not everything is on Newton or LibrarySearch

Only around a third of all sheet music can be found on the online catalogues

If you can’t find what you want please

ASK!

ONLINE CATALOGUES

4

Music catalogues are among the most diverse in the library :

Online catalogues : Newton / LibrarySearch / JANUS

Card catalogues : With a choice of primary (more academic) or secondary (more ephemeral) music, in a variety of locations (although principally in the Anderson Room)

Sheaf catalogues : Secondary music “only” but with a few surprises

And the behind the scenes manual and computer catalogues for uncatalogued items (there are around 61,000 of these!)

If you find a non-borrowable copy on the electronic catalogues, it’s worth double checking the card catalogues for a borrowable copy

REMEMBER….

14

17

Most sheet music is either catalogued in the card catalogues in the Anderson Room, or is in a behind the scenes manual or electronic catalogue.

THE CARD CATALOGUES

18

There are two card catalogues – one each for primary and secondary material, with a further sheaf catalogue for earlier secondary.

THE CARD CATALOGUES

19

Cards are arranged alphabetically by composer (anonymous works will be listed by title)

If we have very few works by a particular composer they will be arranged alphabetically by title within that composer

More works and they’ll be sub-divided by medium

THE CARD CATALOGUES

It’s in the cards

It’s in the cards…..

It’s in the cards……

• Sometimes you’ll spot a pencilled classmark at the top-right hand corner of a card catalogued item….

• If this happens ask Anderson Room staff for advice

Manuscripts• Most music manuscripts

including composers’ archives are held in the Manuscripts Department

• If they’re still in process of being catalogued and sorted, they’ll usually be in the Music Department

• If in doubt….

•ASK!
