Miles Davis

! 1926 – 1991, ! Was accepted to study music at Juliard but ended up playing with

! One of the most influential musicians of the past century, always pushed the boundaries in jazz. Made cool jazz famous and started many fusion trends in jazz.

Dizzy Gillespie

! 1917 - 1993 ! Received a music scholarship to Laurinburg Institute,

Laurinburg, North Carolina and quit school in 1935 to peruse a career as a musician.

! Famous for his amazingly fast be-bop style trumpet playing which stretched further into the upper register than anyone before, puffed out cheeks, and bent trumpet bell. Also played lead trumpet in many bands in which he was the leader.

Roy Hargrove

! 1969 – Present ! Attended Berkley college ! Started his recording career with Bobby Watson (sax player).

In 1993 he was commissioned by the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, and wrote The Love Suite: In Mahogany. Hargrove won a Grammy Award in 1998 for the album Habana with his Afro-Cuban band, Crisol.

! 1938 - 1972 ! Attended the University of New Orleans ! By the time he was 15, Morgan was leading his own group. His first

Nicholas Payton ! 1973 – Present ! Attended the University of New Orleans ! Payton's technical mastery is remarkable and he plays with a

clear, ringing sound that brings added depths to his bop styling.

Bud Herseth (1921-)

! Studied under Marcel LaFosse and George Mager and the New England Conservatory (1946-1948)

! Principal Trumpet with Chicago Symphony starting in 1948 and held the position for 50 years making him the longest serving American principal trumpeter.

! Perhaps the most respected American orchestral trumpet player ! CSO trumpet section first to implement the use of identical trumpets

throughout the section (Bach large-bore C trumpets with 229 bells) and the use of German rotary valve trumpets in older works for reasons of timbre.

! Was elected a charter member of the Trumpet Hall of Fame in Denver, CO in 1970

Susan Slaughter

! A graduate of Indiana University, Slaughter has studied with Herbert Müeller, Bernard Adelstein, Arnold Jacobs, Robert Nagel, Claude Gordon and Laurie Frink.

! Joined the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra in 1969 and became the first woman to be named principal trumpet of a major symphony orchestra in 1973.

! Founder of the annual International Women’s Brass Conference ! Slaughter has been on the faculty of the Grand Teton Orchestra Seminar

! In January 1975, while still at Juilliard, Mr. Smith was appointed to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra by Sir Georg Solti

! Joined the New York Philharmonic as Co-Principal Trumpet in October 1978, and assumed the position of Solo Principal Trumpet in June 1988

! Has been on the faculty of the Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music

Armando Ghitalla (June 1, 1925 - December 14, 2001)

! Entered the U.S. Navy in 1943 and played in the Navy Dance Band. ! After WWII he used the G.I. Bill to enroll in the Juilliard School of Music. ! Performed in the New York City Opera, the New York City Ballet, and the

Houston Symphony. ! He was a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra for twenty eight years, and

served as principal trumpet (succeeding Roger Voisin) for fifteen. ! He was also active as a soloist, and was the first trumpeter to record the Trumpet

Concerto in E by Johann Nepomuk Hummel. ! He served on the faculties of Boston University, the New England Conservatory,

the Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford, the Tanglewood Music Center and the University of Michigan. At the time of his death, he was on the faculty of the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University.

Charles Schlueter

! Grew up om Di Quoin, IL and got his early musical training there. ! Received instruction in St. Louis, Missouri from Edward Brauer who

was a member of the staff of the NBC radio studio. His studies culminated at the Juilliard School, from which h e graduated in 1962. There his mentor was William Vacchiano.

! Has been principal trumpet of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and a member of the Boston Symphony Chamber Players since 1981.

! Prior to his appointment in Boston, he held the position of principal trumpet in the Minnesota Orchestra, the Milwaukee Symphony, and the Kansas City Philharmonic. He was associate principal trumpet in the Cleveland Orchestra under George Szell.

! Currently on the faculties of the New England Conservatory and the Tanglewood Music Center. ! Albums:

George Vosburgh

! Graduate of the University of Rochester’s Eastman School of Music, where he was Princip al Trumpet and featured soloist with the Eastman Wind Ensemble.

! Began his career as an orchestral trumpeter at age 19 as third trumpet and assistant principal of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of David Zinman.

! After three years with Rochester, he joined the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under the direction of the late Sir Georg Solti as the youngest member of that orchestra’s world-famous brass section.

! In 1992 he joined the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra as Principal Trumpet. ! He is currently on the faculty of Duquesne University and Carnegie Mellon

University, both in Pittsburgh. ! Albums:

William Vacchiano

! In 1931, Vacchiano entered the Institute of Musical Art, which later became The Juilliard School, where he studied with the renowned Max Schlossburg until 1933.

! Member of the New York Philharmonic for 38 years (as assistant principal from 1935-42 and principal from 1942 until his retirement from the orchestra in 1973)

! Vacchiano never missed a concert in which he was scheduled to perform! ! Treasured member of the Juilliard faculty for an astonishing 67 years

(1935-2002), and also served on the faculties of the Manhattan School of Music (1935-2002) and the Mannes College of Music (1937-83).

! In 1995, Vacchiano estimated that he had taught about 2,000 trumpet students. At one time, his students played in virtually every major orchestra in the country.

! Previous appointments included principal of the Dallas and Detroit symphonies and assistant principal of the Chicago Symphony

! Has appeared as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Detroit Symphony, Grant Park Symphony, Chicago Chamber Orchestra, the Bach Festival in Cranbrook, and Pennsylvania Symphonia Orchestra.

! He serves on the executive board of the International Trumpet Guild, which presented him with the Award of Merit in 2004.

! He grew up playing in brass bands in Yorkshire, and notably was Principal Cornet of the world famous Black Dyke Mills Band from 1956 to 1961.

! Principal Trumpet of the London Symphony Orchestra since 1977

! Held the position of Principal Trumpet with the BBC Northern Orchestra (now the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra) from 1961 and in 1977

! Maurice's unique sound can be heard on film soundtracks including Gangs of New York, Johnny English, Reign of Fire, Mr. Holland’s Opus, all six of the Star Wars movies, Superman 1, 2 & 3, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Philadelphia, Batman, the Alien movies, Frankenstein, Gladiator, Who Framed Roger Rabbit and many more.
