FINDING HOPE IN MIDST OF GRIEFFINDING HOPE IN MIDST OF GRIEF

We are now about half way through the season ofLent, and as we continue this sacred journeytogether, I am becoming even more convinced thatas a nation, community, and church family, we needto find healthy ways to access, acknowledge andexpress our grief, as we seek to be made wholeagain through Christ who strengthens us. 4:30-5:15: Holy Eucharist & Healing Service5:15-6:00: Dinner (Sandefur Hall)

6:00-8:00: Seminar (Sandefur Hall) Parishioner Peggy Koblenzer will be our presenter/facilitator. Peggy and herhusband Dale are proverbial “snowbirds” from Akron, Ohio, where they have beenmembers at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church for several years. Peggy and Dale aretransitioning to full-time residency here in Santa Rosa Beach, and Peggy alreadyserves on the St. Theresa’s Flower Guild, and to my delight, when I announced thatour Adult Forum this Lent was going to be on the psalms of lament, shevolunteered to help with anything grief/loss related, since that is what she doesfor a living! Peggy, MSSA, ACSW received her B.A. from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1977, andher M.S.S.A. from Case Western Reserve University in 1980. She became a CertifiedGrief Counselor in 1994, and a Certified Grief Therapist in 1997 through theAssociation for Death Education Counseling. In Peggy’s own words: “For over 25 years, I have had the honor and privilege towalk the journey of grief with many people. Usually, there are many mixedemotions that accompany the journey of grief. Often, I have been asked, "Howlong does this take," or "will I ever feel better?" Working through your grief takestime. You may wonder why some people seem to be doing so well after the loss ofa loved one yet, your struggle continues. Remember, you don't have to walk alone. As you begin this journey filled with many twists and turns, it is important thatyou have a pathway to healing. During the seminar, there will be time for questions, answers and discussion. Butfirst it is important to: * understand the grief process and how it relates to your loss; * understand that there are different ways to grieve; * explore the many ways to help yourself through this journey.

You don't have to feel sad for ever, there is a way forward by establishing a newnormal. Renewal and rebirth are possible. Come and find out that hope is behindthe door waiting for you to open it.” I am deeply grateful that Peggy has offered to be a part of this sacred journey withus, and I hope that you join us on March 16. DAILY LENTEN MEDITATIONSDAILY LENTEN MEDITATIONS

Page 6: FINDING HOPE IN MIDST OF GRIEF · Working through your grief takes time. You may wonder why some people seem to be doing so well after the loss of a loved one yet, your struggle continues

During Lent, as we work toward anintentional spiritual focus in our lives, wehave the renewed opportunity to encounterChrist in everyone, loving our neighbors asourselves. This Lenten season, our parish –along with others around the world – will behighlighting Episcopal Relief & Development(ERD). ERD works with Church partners andother local organizations to save lives andtransform communities worldwide. Theyrebuild after disasters and empower peopleto create lasting solutions that fight poverty, hunger and disease. Working in close to 40countries, ERD impacts the lives ofapproximately 3 million people around theworld.

ERD has produced the Lenten meditation series, with daily entries written byprogram staff, volunteers, and others about their experiences. We have themavailable in book form, so please take one from the Narthex or church office. Or,you can sign up online to receive the daily entry via email. Click here to sign up.

We will also be introducing ERD to the children during Sunday School & Children’sChapel, as well as our students at The Tree House Episcopal Montessori School byteaching them about the Gifts for Life goat program. Goats are hardy, reproducequickly, and can be used in a variety of ways. Each goat costs $80. We will provideeach child with a Hope Chest – a small paper piggie bank – that they can takehome. At the end of Lent, we hope to have raised enough money to buy 5 goatsfor communities in need. Adults are welcome to participate as well – a littlehealthy competition never hurts in the name of a good cause. Our hope is that ourparish can learn more about the work of ERD during this Lenten season!
