Sociology 2Z03: Intro to Research

Before you start a new research project…

Check Library and Research Help Desk Hours http://library.mcmaster.ca/

time your research so we can help!

Sociology 2Z03: Intro to Research

e-Article Databases – What are they?

locate articles by subject, author, etc. “what exists” but not necessarily “what’s in the

library” some have

– full text of the articles– citations (references) only – abstracts (summaries) of articles

Sociology 2Z03: Intro to Research

Connecting to e-Article Databases

start at the Library home page:– http://library.mcmaster.ca – click on e-Resources > Subject – e-article databases are listed first– don’t go to e-journals!

authentication required?– from library, MacConnect, technology centre, home:

yes! -- MAC ID (or LibAccess)– from residence: no!

Sociology 2Z03: Intro to Research

Sociological Abstracts

620,000+ abstracts of articles from 1,800+ journals

sociology and related disciplines in the social and behavioral sciences

articles, book reviews, books, book chapters, dissertations, conference papers

international in scope since 2001, also include the references cited

in the bibliography of the source article

Challenge!

Find articles on this topic:

What is the influence

of gender

on psychological and/or social well being?

(3 minutes)

Searching e-Article Databases

Skills & Tips

or,“e-Article Databases

Don’t Work the Same Way as Google!”

Sociology 2Z03: Intro to Research

Avoid the most common mistake in searching

influence of gender

on psychological and/or social well being

search engine tries to find that exact phrase– you get 0 results

Sociology 2Z03: Intro to Research

Tip: Identify Key Words and Phrases

analyze your search statement:

influence of gender on

psychological and/or social well being …and break your topic into parts:

gender, well being

Sociology 2Z03: Intro to Research

Phrases are fine, but…

not too long, just one idea per phrase,

e.g. well being

Sociology 2Z03: Intro to Research

Truncation, or Wild Card

an asterisk * retrieves words with different endings

broadens your search

gender* gets gender

genders

gendered, etc.

Sociology 2Z03: Intro to Research

Combining Terms: AND

narrows your search by requiring both search terms

gender and well being

Sociology 2Z03: Intro to Research

Combining Terms: OR

broadens your search to include synonyms, alternate spellings,

abbreviations, etc. in your search always enclose the or’d words in parentheses:

(gender or sex)

(well being or well-being)

Sociology 2Z03: Intro to Research

Putting It All Together

(gender* or sex) and

(well being or well-being)

Sociology 2Z03: Intro to Research

Search Within Fields

to focus your search use green ‘advanced search’ tab and

drop-down menus to search only within the:– titles– authors– descriptors, etc.

Sociology 2Z03: Intro to Research

The “One Good Article” Strategy

to focus your search find 1 good article

– try the “Sort by: Relevance Rank” feature

use language from descriptors (or identifiers or subject headings), authors to get more

Sociology 2Z03: Intro to Research

Limiting

to narrow your search Advanced Search screen typical limits:

– date, e.g. 1995-2004– publication type, e.g. journal article– language, e.g. English

Sociology 2Z03: Intro to Research

Do We Have Access to the Article?

some databases have hotlinks to some articles– e.g. #7

if no hotlinks, click …to see whether the library has an online or paper subscription to the journal

we may have:– one or more online subscriptions (e.g. #5 )– one or more paper subscriptions (e.g. #3)– or both (e.g. #2 ), or neither (e.g. #13)

Sociology 2Z03: Intro to Research

What if Get It! doesn’t work?

if Get It! doesn’t appear, or doesn’t work:

– open another browser– go to MORRIS– and do a Journal Title search

what would you type in the MORRIS search box if you were looking for #15 that way?

how would you find article #15 on the shelf?

Sociology 2Z03: Intro to Research

Output

saving or emailing your list of references

printing or photocopying an article

Sociology 2Z03: Intro to Research
