Resume AssistanceEven if you have a wealth of experience and accomplishments under your belt, your resume can likely “make or break” your chances of successfully landing a job interview. Keep the following tips as a guideline when tailoring your resume to attract prospective employers.

Tip #1: Don’t submit a “one-size-fits-all” resume.

Each employer and vacancy will likely be unique, so edit your resume based on the specific job and company for which you are applying. Study the company’s website and press materials; extract key words, phrases, and ideas that align with that particular company’s culture and core messages; and model your resume with these points in mind.

Tip #2: Properly format your header.

Keep your name in bold, caps, and/or a larger font at the top of the page. Include contact details such as your email, phone number, and full address in a regular, unbolded font.

Tip #3: The length of your resume should align with your level of experience.

While a one-page resume is typically advised, don’t hold yourself back to extend to two pages if you have a wealth of professional experience and accomplishments over the course of a long and fruitful career.

Tip #4: Design your own template.

Hiring managers and employers are likely to receive an influx of resumes for vacant positions. It may work against you to submit a resume with a pre-made format that looks unoriginal, or to share the same template as another applicant. You can use these pre-made formats for inspiration, but it’s best to let your originality have the

23

final word. Additionally, if your industry allows for creativity, let it shine through in a unique format (e.g. an interactive template for graphic designers, a Google Analytics-inspired template for marketing managers, etc.).

Tip #5: Keep it simple, yet focus on keywords.

Don’t aim to fill your resume with needless words and details. Express your strengths and experience in as few words as needed to get the maximum impact. Even so, keep in mind that some companies use online recruitment tools that specifically search for relevant keywords within an applicant’s resume. Include keywords that are specific and actionable, rather than generic.

Tip #6: Only include relevant experience for the specific position at hand.

While you may have plenty of experience in another field that lasted a significant amount of time, only include these details if they relate to the position for which you are applying. If the experience isn’t in the same industry but the job required similar skills or tasks, be sure to communicate the commonalities within your resume.

Tip #7: Use bullets wisely.

Include a maximum of 3-5 bullets under each place of employment to highlight your duties and accomplishments. Don’t use full sentences, and write the content so as to communicate chief details as efficiently as possible. Furthermore, quantify and qualify your experience with numbers, names, and other specifics to give as much color and detail to your resume as possible. Avoid generic phrases in favor of clear and precise copy.

Tip #8: Be judicious with your educational background.

Include only basic and relevant information on your educational background, including the name of the institution, your degree, and year of completion, and place it below your work experience. If you’re a recent graduate with a limited work

24

background, you may place coursework that may be relevant to the position for which you’re applying. Avoid including details about your high school, unless you have no further training or schooling exceeding this level.

Tip #9: Don’t include your references.

While the employer or staffing agency will likely request references, they will likely do so at a later time if they become more interested in your application. There’s no need to waste space on your resume indicating that “references are available upon request.”

Tip #10: List your experience in reverse-chronological order.

Your current or most recent work experience should be listed at the top, and should logically follow in reverse-chronological order thereafter. If you have gaps in your timeline, your interviewer may ask you for clarification about these instances.

LinkedInLinkedIn is an increasingly popular business social network with over 300 million users. It’s smart to invest time in developing your professional profile in order to attract potential new employers, clients, partners, investors, and the like. Take a look at the following tips to make your LinkedIn profile stand out from the crowd.

Tip #1: Actively socialize.

Join groups, generate posts, and contribute to existing conversations in order to make new connections, get your name out there, and collect more profile views.

Tip #2: The more detail, the better.

Be sure to fill out relevant fields and categories, such as your general industry, educational background, and affiliated groups or organizations. Always keep your profile up to date, and include a concise summary in order to maximize page views.

Tip #3: Appearances matter.

Include a professional-looking photo of yourself rather than a cropped, blurry, and too casual photo. It can also help to add graphics to your profile, providing viewers with a richer and more tangible experience of getting familiar with your work background.

Tip #4: Work isn’t everything.

While this tip generally doesn’t apply to standard resumes, including skills, hobbies, volunteer experience, and similar activities may help attract potential employers by giving them a sense of your personality and interests. An increasing number of employers are seeking job candidates based on their potential to fit in with the company culture, so use this opportunity to your advantage.

Tip #5: Tailor your endorsements.

Potential employers will want to recognize your greatest strengths right off the bat. Having many endorsements within a smaller number of skills will work more to your advantage than having dozens of endorsed skills with only several ratings each.

Tip #6: Keep on connecting.

Make as many contacts as you can within your industry. Attaining more first-level and second-level connections will make your profile more visible and will likely attract more incoming messages and connection requests. Psychologically speaking, a job candidate with 500+ connections will look more appealing than a person who has a significantly smaller number.

Job InterviewsOnce you’ve polished your resume and applied for open positions, it’s time to prepare for your interview. This section will detail actionable advice for making a good, lasting, and professional impression.

Tip #1: Do your homework.

Make sure to thoroughly research the company before you go into your interview. Review the company website, social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn), and news articles pertaining to the organization. It’s wise to prove that you know details about the company, instead of just showing up solely because you need the income.

Additionally, if you know the name of the person who will be interviewing you, look into their background as well. Perhaps you have something in common, whether it’s a mutual friend, hobby, or alma mater. Small commonalities such as these may be able to set you aside from the pool of applicants.

Finally, if you know someone or friend of a friend who works/has worked for the company, use this knowledge to your advantage. In your interview, mention aspects that you like about the company and explain how and why you’d uniquely fit into and contribute to their existing operations.

Tip #2: Dress the part.

As the saying goes, don’t dress for the job you have, but for the job you want. Depending on your industry, business casual clothing for men may include ironed slacks or khakis, a button-down shirt, clean shoes, and perhaps a tie. Women’s business casual clothing may include a blouse, knee-length or lower skirt, slacks, and flat or low-heeled shoes.

Of course, your interviewer will focus more on your experience and potential than your attire, so be sure that you outfit is neither distracting nor offensive. The aim is to look polished, professional,

comfortable, and confident.

Tip #3: Be timely.

One nuance of American culture hints that you should arrive just a little early to a work interview. Arriving 10-15 minutes prior to your scheduled interview time shows that you are professionally minded and respect your interviewer’s time.
