Invocation & Call to Worship (Psalm 119:160)

Pastor: The sum of Your word is truth, Congregation: And every one of Your righteous rules endures forever.

Pastor: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Congregation: Amen.

Opening Song Set: “Open Now Thy Gates of Beauty”

Open now thy gates of beauty; Zion, let me enter there, Where my soul in joyful duty Waits for Him who answers prayer. Oh, how blessed is this place, Filled with solace, light, and grace!

Women Gracious God, I come before Thee; Come Thou also unto me. Where we find Thee and adore Thee, There a heav’n on earth must be. To my heart, O enter Thou; Let it be Thy temple now.

All Here Thy praise is gladly chanted; Here Thy seed is duly sown. Let my soul, where it is planted, Bring forth precious sheaves alone, So that all I hear may be Fruitful unto life in me.

Men Thou my faith increase and quicken; Let me keep Thy gift divine, Howsoe’er temptations thicken, May Thy Word still o’er me shine As my guiding star through life, As my comfort in all strife.

Epistle Romans 7:1-13 ESV 9:00am: Ron Bischoff

11:00am: Phyllis Garner

Or do you not know, brothers—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law is binding on a person only as long as he lives? 2For a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives, but if her husband dies she is released from the law of marriage. 3Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law, and if she marries another man she is not an adulteress.

4Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God. 5For while we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death. 6But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code.

7What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.” 8But sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. For apart from the law, sin lies dead. 9I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin came alive and I died. 10The very commandment that promised life proved to be death to me. 11For sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me. 12So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.

13Did that which is good, then, bring death to me? By no means! It was sin, producing death in me through what is good, in order that sin might be shown to be sin, and through the commandment might become sinful beyond measure.

Holy Gospel Matthew 10:32-42 ESV

32So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, 33but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.

34“Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.36And a person's enemies will be those of his own household. 37Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more

than me is not worthy of me. 38And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

40“Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me. 41The one who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and the one who receives a righteous person because he is a righteous person will receive a righteous person's reward. 42And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.

Sermon Song: “Power of Your Love”

Lord, I come to You, Let my heart be changed, renewed Flowing from the grace that I’ve found in You. And Lord I’ve come to know The weaknesses I see in me, Will be stripped away, by the pow’r of Your love.

Hold me close, let Your love surround me. Bring me near, draw me to Your side. And as I wait, I’ll rise up like the eagle And I will soar with You Your Spirit leads me on in the pow’r of Your love.

Lord unveil my eyes, Let me see You face to face, The knowledge of Your love, as You live in me. Lord renew my mind, As Your will unfolds in my life, In living every day, in the pow’r of Your love.

Hold me close, let Your love surround me. Bring me near, draw me to Your side. And as I wait, I’ll rise up like the eagle And I will soar with You Your Spirit leads me on in the pow’r of Your love.

Sermon: “Finders Weepers, Losers Keepers” Matthew 10 Let’s be honest: the person who most often gets in the way of following Jesus isn’t the “world” or someone out there, it’s the self! That’s why Jesus calls us to take up our cross as we follow Him. No one is worthy of following Jesus, yet in order to follow, Jesus must be first. Jesus Keeps His Promises

Know Jesus, no peace? What kind of sword is this? (v. 34) Most Important Family Member

Not worthy x3! Is anyone worthy to follow Jesus? “take his cross and follow me”

Life Group Questions

Head (what?)

Why does the Gospel have the potential to bring division within families, instead of unity? What is Jesus calling us to do regarding our families? How does one lose his life in order to find it?

Heart (so what?) Do you truly love Jesus above all else? What cross is Jesus asking you to take up? How does eternal life impact your earthly life?

Hands (now what?) How can you explain love for God, is a first priority, to your unbelieving family members without offending them? How does discipleship play a role in taking up ones cross to follow Jesus? As you listen to the confirmation vows or think back on your confirmation, are there any changes that need to happen?

The Third Article of the Apostles Creed with Explanation (9:00am)

All: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Pastor: What does this mean?

All: I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him; but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith. In the same way He calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian Church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith. In this Christian Church He daily and richly forgives all my sins and the sins of all believers. On the Last Day He will raise me and all the dead, and give eternal life to me and all believers in Christ. This is most certainly true.

Rite of Confirmation (11:00am) Pastor: Beloved in the Lord, our Lord Jesus Christ said to His apostles: “All

authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” You have been baptized and catechized in the Christian faith according to our Lord’s bidding. Jesus said, “Whoever confesses Me before men, I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.” Lift up your hearts, therefore, to the God of all grace and joyfully give answer to what I now ask you in the name of the Lord.

Do you this day in the presence of God and of this congregation acknowledge the gifts that God gave you in your Baptism?

Confirmand: Yes, I do.

Pastor: Do you renounce the devil and all his works and ways? Confirmand: Yes, I renounce them.

Pastor: Do you believe in God, the Father Almighty? Confirmand: Yes, I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and

earth.

Pastor: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord? Confirmand: Yes, I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our lord, who are

conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

Pastor: Do you believe in the Holy Spirit? Confirmand: Yes, I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church, the

communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Pastor: Do you confess the doctrine of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, drawn from the Scriptures, as you have learned to know it from the Small Catechism, to be faithful and true?

Confirmand: I do.

Page 11: Finders Weepers, Losers Keepersf838bb269167a3f3e1e4-f522ed318e928ea232defd9968f9ad75.r93.c… · 6/28/2020  · Here Thy praise is gladly chanted; Here Thy seed is duly sown. Let

Pastor: Do you intend to hear the Word of God and receive the Lord’s Supper faithfully?

Confirmand: I do, by the grace of God.

Pastor: Do you intend to continue steadfast in this confession and Church and to suffer all, even death, rather than fall away from it?

Confirmand: I do, by the grace of God.

Pastor: We rejoice with thankful hearts that you have been baptized and have received the teaching of the Lord. You have confessed the faith and been absolved of your sins. As you continue to hear the Lord’s Word and receive His blessed Sacrament, He who has begun a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

Congregation: Amen

Parent(s): _________, the almighty God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given you the new birth of water and of the Spirit and has forgiven you all your sins, strengthen you with His grace to life everlasting. We bless you as a loved child of God. May the Holy Spirit be your Helper and Guide as you follow Jesus. Congregation: Amen.

After all the catechumens have received the blessing:

Pastor: Upon this, your profession and promise, I invite and welcome you, as members of the Friendship Celebration Lutheran Church to share with us in all the gifts our Lord has for His Church and to live them out continually in His worship and service.

All: Lord God, heavenly Father, we thank and praise You for Your great goodness in bringing these, Your children, to the knowledge of Your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ, and enabling them both with the heart to believe and with the mouth to confess His saving name. Grant that, bringing forth the fruits of faith, they may continue steadfast and victorious to the day when all who have fought the good fight of faith shall receive the crown of righteousness; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Preface

Pastor: The Lord be with you. Congregation: And also with you.

Pastor: Lift up your hearts. Congregation: We lift them to the Lord.

Pastor: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. Congregation: It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

Words of Institution Preparation for The Lord’s Table Holy Communion: We celebrate the Lord’s Supper today by receiving the Body and Blood of Christ which is given in, with and under the bread and wine. In this meal, we receive the forgiveness of sins, the promise of life everlasting and the strength we need to live faithfully. We invite to the Lord’s Table baptized believers who are truly repentant of sin and seek the grace in this meal, forgiving of one another as we have been forgiven, and gladly believe and confess the Real Presence of Christ in this meal. All people are welcome to come forward for a blessing. Participating in the meal is how the church proclaims the Lord’s death, resurrection and imminent return. Red wine is used to best visually convey the blood of Christ. For personal or medical reasons, white grape juice is also available in the center of the trays.

Distribution Songs: “Kingdom Prayer”

Lord, we’re broken, brokenhearted, tired of going our own way. We’ve been proud and self-sufficient, but we’re broken here today. Lord, we need Your power within us, for we have none of our own. Take this broken heart and mend it with Thy power and Thine alone.

Lord, we’re mourning, mourning children, mourning o’er the sins inside, For they’re always right before us, much too great for us to hide. Lord, we need Your power within us, for we have none of our own. Take this mourning heart and comfort, with Thy power and Thine alone.

Lord, we hunger and we thirst for righteousness that’s not our own. For we see our selfish motives; we need You to take Your throne. Lord, we need Your power within us, for we have none of our own. Take this hungry heart and fill it with Thy power and Thine alone.

“Lamb of God”

Your only Son, no sin to hide, But You have sent Him from Your side, To walk upon this guilty sod, And to become the Lamb of God.

O Lamb of God, sweet Lamb of God, I love the holy Lamb of God! O wash me in His precious blood, My Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God.

Your gift of Love, they crucified, They laughed and scorned Him as He died, The humble King they named a fraud And sacrificed the Lamb of God.

O Lamb of God, sweet Lamb of God, I love the holy Lamb of God! O wash me in His precious blood, My Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God.

I was so lost, I should have died, But You have brought me to Your side, To be led by Your staff and rod, And to be called a lamb of God.

O Lamb of God, sweet Lamb of God, I love the holy Lamb of God! O wash me in His precious blood, My Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God.

Blessing

Pastor: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. Congregation: Amen.

Closing Song: “The Stand”

You stood before creation, eternity in Your hand. You spoke the earth into motion, My soul now to stand.

You stood before my failure, and carried the cross for my shame, My sin weighed upon Your shoulders, My soul now to stand.

So what can I say, and what can I do, But offer this heart, O God, completely to You.

So I’ll walk upon salvation, Your Spirit alive in me My life to declare Your promise, My soul now to stand.

So what can I say, and what can I do, But offer this heart, O God, completely to You.

So I’ll stand with arms high and heart abandoned, In awe of the One who gave it all, I’ll stand, my soul, Lord, to You surrendered. All I am is Yours.

So I’ll stand with arms high and heart abandoned, In awe of the One who gave it all, I’ll stand, my soul, Lord, to You surrendered. All I am is Yours.

So I’ll stand with arms high and heart abandoned, In awe of the One who gave it all, I’ll stand, my soul, Lord, to You surrendered. All I am is Yours. All I am is Yours. All I am is Yours.
