Help Where Your Heart Is

In 1907, our founder, Anna Clise, inspired 23 women to chip in $20 each to launch the hospital after she lost her 6-year-old son. For over a century, we’ve fulfilled Anna’s dream. People like you have said yes to kids at Seattle Children’s in all kinds of ways. Today, we need you more than ever. We see a day when we can say yes to hope, care and cures for every child and family — and you can help.

Meet MakennaThis eastern Washington teen combats medical hurdles with a smile — and also makes a big difference for other kids.

Makenna was born with Larsen syndrome, an extremely rare connective tissue disorder that causes bone dislocations and affects her airway, spine and joints. She had her first appointment at Seattle Children’s when she was 1 week old and has since undergone 15 surgeries.

At age 7, she started fundraising. She has collected toys, sold donuts and organized community drives for needed items — such as Radio Flyer wagons, baby swings, gift cards and toiletries.

In 2017, Makenna was given a wish by the Make-A-Wish® Foundation and decided to use it to make the world better for families and kids like her. Makenna had seen on social media that actor Chris Pratt had visited Seattle Children’s. For her wish, she invited Pratt to the hospital to brainstorm with her and her orthopedic care team about what they could do for patients. She and Pratt launched a joint CrowdRise fundraiser under the name “Team MakPratt” that raised more than $800,000.

Take a Tour or Attend an EventGetting involved with Seattle Children’s can be a blast! Every year, there are hundreds of events including: concerts, fun runs, auctions, family-friendly carnivals and much more. Additionally, you can schedule a guided tour to learn more about the hospital, research institute or one of our specialty clinics.

Become a VolunteerDonating your time is meaningful. Over 70 areas of our hospital depend on dedicated volunteers for everything from patient and family support to clerical work. You can help out closer to home by volunteering at one of our regional clinics or bargain boutique stores. We also partner with high school students to fulfill their service projects.

Donate the Way You Want, Where You WantChoose where you want to make an impact — cancer research to uncompensated care to therapeutic play — and choose how you’d like to donate.

Make a direct donation online. Get your business involved by sponsoring an event, starting a workplace giving campaign or setting up your own fundraising page. Honor a loved one by making a gift in their name or plan ahead by making a legacy gift through your will or life insurance policy. You can even turn your birthday into a Facebook fundraiser.

Make Your Shopping CountWhether you shop online or in person, you can make your shopping count for kids. Year-round programs like AmazonSmile make it easy for you to sign up and donate automatically. There are also seasonal in-store promotions, like Purchase a Miracle and Miracle Balloons, as well as additional promotions hosted by hundreds of local retailers. Plus, did you know Seattle Children’s also has six bargain boutiques that sell donated goods? You can donate or shop — and if you live nearby, we may be able to pick up larger donations.

Host a FundraiserFundraising can be easy and fun. Organize a toy drive, host a dinner party or fundraise online. We can help you along the way.

Get Involved With a GuildSeattle Children’s Guild Association is an all-volunteer fundraising network of over 5,000 people. Guild activities range from hosting auctions and wine tastings to fun runs and golf tournaments. You can start a guild, join an existing guild or attend a guild event.

Share Your Patient Story Makenna shared her powerful story and was able to broaden community support for Seattle Children’s as a patient ambassador for It Starts With Yes: The Campaign for Seattle Children’s. By acting as a patient ambassador, you can get involved in a variety of ways — from writing a thank-you card to speaking at an event.

“My goal is to give kids hope and encourage them to find their voices to bring about the positive changes they want to see happen. Just because we’re kids doesn’t mean we can’t change the world — because we so can.” — Makenna Schwab

Kids Helping KidsKids can make a meaningful difference in the lives of their peers. Depending on their age and interests, there are many ways to involve your kids and their schools.

• Join or start a junior guild.

• Volunteer at home by making handmade items for kids in the hospital.

• Hold a birthday party and ask guests to make a donation instead of buying a present.

• Organize a school drive for needed items.

Every year, Katie says thank you to Seattle Children’s for saving her life by hosting a lemonade-stand fundraiser with her friends.
