VOLUME 38, NO.3 THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF Message From Leadership I t’s only March, but at the Chamber of Commerce, preparations for the 2011 Palos Verdes Street Fair and Music Festival are in full swing. Mark your calendars for the weekend of June 11th and 12th, and join us for the biggest party on the Hill. The fun kicks off on Friday evening June 10th with a P.V. teens-only Carnival Night with proceeds benefitting the Peninsula Education Foundation and continues through the weekend with great “fair fare”; carnival rides; fabulous music from tribute bands to David Benoit and the Asia America Symphony; dozens of booths selling crafts, clothing, accessories, services and more; and a petting zoo and kids’ activity area. On Saturday, bring your dog to the “Top Dogs” Dog Show for the “Pups and People” costume or dog and owner look- alike contests, or show Fido’s stuff in the Best Trick competition. Don’t have a dog? Local animal rescue organizations will have some wonderful pets in need of homes under the Big Tent throughout the day on Saturday. You can also take advantage of great deals from the merchants at the Promenade of the Peninsula and Peninsula Center shopping centers, explore a fighter jet courtesy of the Western Museum of Flight, and even view the NBA playoffs on a big screen. With over 40,000 visitors, there is also no better place to promote your business than at the Street Fair. We have plenty of opportunities to have your business name featured prominently at locations throughout the Fair and on advertisements and promotional materials distributed throughout the South Bay and greater Los Angeles area as well as on Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites. There are still a few booths left, too… although these are going fast. Want more information? Local businesses require comparatively little infrastructure investments, add more to our tax base and make more efficient use of public services. Shopping locally keeps your sales tax

dollars in your community. City budgets depend on sales tax revenue to pay for public services such as, fire, police, emergency, road repair and recreation trails and facilities. Thinking Local

FIRST helps the Hill keep its distinctive character and your property values high.

MAKE THE COMMUNITY CONNECTION

Join the Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce as they present a free Non Profit Seminar, “Step by Step Stewardship” by speaker Janet Levine. Happy donors are likely to become donors again…and again. Unhappy donors become lapsed donors—one of the 60 percent who never make a second gift to your organization, or the 30 percent who fall away each year. That’s a tremendous waste of time and effort — and it is totally unnecessary. Step-by-Step Stewardship will show you how to nurture your donors and get those follow-on gifts. In addition, you’ll learn how stewardship can be used to create a more effective development program and increase your fundraising capacity. Ms. Levine founded Janet Levine Consulting, with a mission to helping non profits and educational organizations increase their fundraising capacity. She began her non profit career at USC. She was VP of University Advancement at CSU Dominguez Hills and has worked at Pasadena City College, El Camino, the American Film Institute, University of Oregon and the Reason Foundation. In addition to consulting for a wide variety of non profit and educational organizations, Janet regularly teaches courses in non profit management, fundraising and grant development. She has an MBA from the Graziadio School of Business at Pepperdine University.

Senator Wright honors 2011 “Women of Distinction.” Local women recognized for commitment to their community

On Friday, March 4, two dozen “Women of Distinction” from throughout the 25th Senate District

were praised by Senator Roderick Wright for their service, dedication, hard work and advocacy at a luncheon in their honor at the beautiful Palos Verdes Golf Club. The Mistress of Ceremonies for this wonderful event was veteran NBC co-anchor Beverly White and entertainment was provided by the band Supa Lowery Bros and talented young dancers from the Peninsula School of Performing Arts. These accomplished and selfless women were nominated by the cities, Assembly districts, chambers of commerce and service clubs within the 25th Senate District for their continued service to a wide variety of causes and organizations and have demonstrated great dedication to their communities. The Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce’s nominee for this prestigious honor was Sharon Ryan. In addition to owning her own travel agency, An Uncommon Journey, for over 20 years and raising a family, Sharon has always made

community service a priority in her life. She was a 25 year board member and founding member of the Palos Verdes Art Center’s Associates group, where she was a recipient of their Lifetime Volunteer Award, as well as a board member and founding member of the Volunteer Center–South Bay’s Affinity Group and is a past Chair of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. She is also a Regional award winner for the Soroptimist International Palos Verdes-San Pedro. Sharon was the co-president of the Palos Verdes Estates Neighborhood Watch for 20 years and is currently a board member and fundraising chair for the Healthcare and Elder Law Programs Corporation (H.E.L.P.). Other 2011 Women of Distinction honorees from the Palos Verdes Peninsula are: JULIA PARTON, Palos Verdes Peninsula Rotary; BETSY BIGGINS, Palos Verdes Peninsula Coordinating Council; MARILOUISE J. HUFF, Palos Verdes Woman’s Club; KATHLEEN MCGOWAN, P.E., City of Rolling Hills Estates; and MARION RUTH, City of Rolling Hills.

Making a community connection is key to maintaining and enhancing the area in which we

live, work and play so that we may enjoy a lifestyle of choices. Unlike many small towns and bedroom communities, the Palos Verdes Peninsula is rich with educational, philanthropic and cultural options. However, the business community on the Peninsula is very similar to them. Our local business owners and managers are emotionally and personally invested in serving our community. For many, it is their livelihood and their passion. They get to know their customers and work harder to serve them, they care about the school or charity fund raiser and they do what they

can because they care about their very own community. This personal care makes our lives better. Do what you can to care about the local small business community. Get to know them and to understand the goods and services available to you on the Peninsula before you go elsewhere. Shopping here benefits all of us in ways ranging from the success of our business owners and employees to our city recreational trails and safety services, from easy access to what we need and want to road repairs and community events. We often forget that doing business locally first is imperative to keeping our local economy thriving. Make the connection....Shop, Dine and Think Local First!
