  • I WAS 14 YEARS OLD THEN....
  • Slide 4
  • My Family Was Converted In Brighton, England, In 1856. We sold our possessions and sailed from Liverpool with 900 others on the vessel Horizon. My name is Polly and this is my story. As you watch, please feel no pity for my hardships. But solace that God watched over me in my trials of life.

  • After six weeks at sea we landed at Boston and then traveled by steam train to Iowa City to get ready for our journey west. 1
  • Slide 6
  • There we purchased two yokes of oxen, one yoke of cows, a wagon and a tent. We were assigned to travel with and assist one of the handcart companies. o

  • At Iowa City our first tragedy occurred... My youngest sister, less than two years of age, suffering from exposure, died, and was buried in a grave never again to be visited. I can remember my father looking back as we pulled away from the shallow grave. 1
  • Slide 8
  • We traveled from fifteen to twenty miles a day... and finally caught up with the handcart companies that day at the Platte River. As I was watching them cross the river there were great lumps of ice floating downstream. It was bitter cold. 1
  • Slide 9
  • One evening as I was looking across the snowy boulders my father waved me back to camp. It was time to go bury the 14 souls who passed in the night... 1
  • Slide 10
  • We traveled on arriving at Devils Canyon. It was bitter cold. My brother James... Was as well as he ever was when he went to bed that night. In the morning he was dead...
  • Slide 11
  • After burying James we went back to camp and said prayers. My baby sister Edith was born the next morning on September 23 rd. She lived six weeks and died... 1
  • Slide 12
  • As we camped that evening I realized my feet were frozen, also my brothers and my sisters. It was nothing but snow. We did not know what would become of us. Mother was gravely ill. Several nights later a man came to our camp and told us Brigham Young had sent men and teams to help us... Help was on the way! 1
  • Slide 13
  • . My mother never got well. She died between the Little and Big Mountains. She was forty- three years of age.
  • Slide 14
  • We arrived at our final destination and were later met by a party sent by Brigham Young... When they saw our condition, frozen, our mother dead, tears rolled down their cheeks... The doctor amputated my toes... while the sisters were dressing mother for her grave... As I watched mother being buried, even though she was not with us, I knew her wishes had been fulfilled. We would be raised around those who believed as we did. It was a great sacrifice for her..
