T he Actuaries Institute will convene the 2016 Financial Services Forum in Melbourne on 16 -17 May 2016. The theme for the Forum is Reimagine the Future. Reimagine a world without Google, Facebook, iPhones… The emergence of ‘disruptors’ in recent years across the consumer landscape has changed our operating environment. Consumers and corporations alike are now more savvy and empowered with an increasing amount of information and choices. Businesses must evolve to remain competitive and so must actuaries. How will disruptors impact the actuarial profession? How do you reimagine your career in this future world? Where are the opportunities? The program is now being prepared and we are seeking papers or presentations. A limited number of concurrent presentation slots are available. Presentations will be 30-35 minutes in duration and presenters should be prepared for another 15-20 minutes of discussion and question time. Supporting papers are encouraged but not required. Suggested Topics 1. Challenges of an Ageing Population As the superannuation system matures with more people moving into the drawdown phase and as people in general live longer, there will be increased demand on the industry to assist individuals to manage the various phases of retirement and key risks like longevity. Governments also face pressures on health, aged care and the Age Pension expenditure as the population ages rapidly. What existing policy settings could be changed, or new policies implemented, to better insulate Australia from the future economic impacts of an ageing population? 2. Financial Sustainability The insurance industry has faced several ‘disruptors’ in the recent years such as rising mental health claims, superannuation awareness, natural disasters, genetic testing and increasing popularity of community sharing services. How can actuaries promote financial sustainability in the current environment and still ensure insurance is affordable to customers? 3. Societal Challenges A growing number of societal challenges such as obesity, intragenerational and intergenerational equity, climate change and pandemics are facing current and future generations of Australians. Can the financial services industry play a role in bringing about change? And how do these challenges affect the way companies do business? 4. Technology Opportunities With constantly evolving technology, vast amounts of data and emerging risks, actuaries cannot afford to be complacent. What opportunities can be developed from data analytics, disruptors and robo-distribution models? What risks do we need to consider e.g. cyber, privacy, data management and governance? 5. Professional Development and Leadership Demographics, technology, economic and geopolitical upheaval is shifting the foundations of the financial services industry. Traditional roles of actuaries have evolved and are being challenged as these forces take hold. How is the profession embracing these challenges through professional development and leading in key areas of public policy and innovation within the financial services industry?
