A formal group is one that is deliberatelycreated to perform a specific task.Members are usually appointed by

organization.eg: committee, work units such as smalldepartments, R&D DEPT or a smallassembly line. A distinctive feature of formalgroups is that a hierarchy of authorityexists, with specified member rules andregulations.

INFORMAL GROUP, also called as clique, is analliance that is neither formally structured, nororganizationally determined. Informal groups

are natural formations in the workenvironment which appear in response to theneed for social contact.

Rather , member roles are loosely defined,

based on member expectations and the needsof a group at any particular moment. A members behavior is guided by his owninternalized perception of what is appropriate.

FORMING - STAGE 1

Member dont have particular purpose,structure, leadership and searching forfriendship and task potentials, no strategy toaddress the group task, norms to guidemembers behavior.

 STORMING - STAGE 2At this stage group development conflict arisesbecause of the need to clarify roles,

responsibilities , procedures, recognitions of his/her abilities, skills. One objective at thisstage is to resolve the conflict about power andtask structure and increasing belongingness .
