INTRODUCTIONA Food court is an area, such as a section of a mall or an alley in which vendors sell food at stations about a common eating area of space, which could be open to air or enclosed depending on its location and surrounding facilities.

Food courts are generally an indoor plaza or common area within a facility that is contiguous with the counters of multiple food vendors and provides a common area for self-serve dining.

Food courts may be found in shopping malls, airports, and parks. In various regions (such as Asia, the Americas, and Africa), it may be a standalone development. In some places of learning such as high schools and universities, food courts have also come to replace or complement traditional cafeterias.

Cineplex is a multiplex also known as a movie theater. A multiplex is a movie theater complex with multiple screens, typically more than one screen within a single complex. They are usually housed in a specially designed building. Sometimes, an existing venue undergoes a renovation where the existing auditoriums are split into smaller ones, or more auditoriums are added in an extension or expansion of the building.

SITE JUSTIFICATIONRecreation and RelaxationThe Marina District itself will offer multiple berths for boats and other marine craft making this land very attractive to investors. Taking a boat out offers the chance to enjoy the quiet waters of the internal city waterway or to be more adventurous and set a course for the ocean.

Maximizing the SpaceThe eastern part of the Marina District will offer fabulous views of the harbour, waterway and the ocean. Moving west, the district will take on a more dramatic, urban appearance. Buildings of varied heights will be clustered and spaced to form some narrow streets and some wider, tree-lined boulevards, with shops, restaurants and bars. City squares will be a major feature in the Marina District, ideal for socializing and meeting friends.

Keeping the traffic flowing and the streets clear will be a priority here as in the rest of Eko Atlantic. Three levels of multistorey parking will be built with residential and commercial floors above. The first two storeys will be reserved only for restaurants, bars and retail outlets, giving easy access when strolling around.

Based on this The Atlantic Pearl would be designed to fit into the site layout to be a centre for motion picture and live entertainment, venue for shows , movie premières, entertainment and show biz events etc.

DESIGN CONSIDERATION Food courts need pedestrian traffic; they often cannot create sufficient

action by themselves. Food courts should be placed where people will logically congregate or certainly pass.

Food courts are generative, but in an unusual way. They usually generate the majority of their traffic during normal dining periods, when the body's computer signals its time for chow. Since a considerable amount of food court sales come from "impulse" decision making.

Seating is a major issue, Moreover, Without adequate seating for peaks, food tenants have a lid on the amount of sales that they can achieve. Unlike other mall tenants, people's stomachs are programmed to three primary periods. In the food business, seating must be provided for peak periods, both now and in the future.

Food courts often should not be included in the first phase of a new mall, simply because there is inadequate food potential for all the space usually allocated. They simply do not have the staying power to survive two or three years of low sales, in relation to occupancy costs.

Page 13: FINAL YEAR PROJECT TOPIC

DESIGN CONSIDERATION More than one of a specific type of food tenant (beef, pizza, chicken, Oriental,

Mexican or others) can rarely survive in a food court, unless in a downtown location. When this occurs, the independent is almost always affected, and usually eliminated.

The shopping center industry has begun to recognize the contribution of food tenants and food courts to the overall mall presentation. In the true sense of the marketplace, shopping and eating go hand and hand. The food court shouldn't be penalized, but rather, perhaps, should be subsidized.

Food court maintenance should somehow be controlled by the food people. Cleanliness to a good food operator is truly next to godliness. What is your reaction when you enter a food operation and see paper on the floor or cluttered tables? Most people, you included, turn and leave. Food courts should be looked at as a single restaurant under the critical eyes of the customer. When its dirty or messy, it turns people off. When they're turned off, they stay away.

Visibility is extremely important to the food tenant, again because of impulse decision making. The concept of trees and shrubs in and around food courts may be aesthetically pleasing; however, the customers often cannot see the signs, or the tenants.

Food is different. Think of your own selection process and abide by it in placing a food court and selecting tenants.
