As I reflect on the last two weeks, I wanted to acknowledge that we understand that these are challenging times for everyone and that we are all in this together. Charles Glassman said, “Kindness begins with the understanding that we all struggle!” and I feel that with the constant changes in the last two weeks we have all struggled at some point.

I have witnessed incredible support and kindness across the school community as they have come together to support one another and our staff. From the students at home, I saw pride and kindness as they shared and acknowledged their peers ‘WOW’ work, connecting with each other and their teacher on Zoom. From the students at school, I have witnessed inclusiveness, had the privilege to be invited to play handball (they are keeping me fit) and received some colourful ‘elephants’ to brighten up my office – thank you Year 2. The kindness shown by the community with the positive feedback for our teachers has been uplifting for all staff who have worked tirelessly. And I have seen the consideration that has been shown by all when at times things didn’t work like we wanted them to such as technology dropping out or freezing. Thank you.

P&C News This week I had the privilege of attending the P & C’s first virtual meeting. I would like to the thank P&C for their ongoing support and all the work that they do. Thank you also for the donation of $10 000 towards quality literacy resources. This will be of great benefit for all students K-6.

At this meeting I had the opportunity to discuss our ‘one model of learning’. Our model is a hybrid model using Seesaw, Google Classroom (Stage 3) and Zoom offering both flexibility and connection for all students working at school or at home. All teachers know their students well and are monitoring students’ engagement, academic progress and wellbeing. We will continue to monitor and refine our processes to achieve the best outcomes for all students. Thank you to those parents who sent in questions prior to the meeting. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

COVID-19 and school operations In line with the further restrictions announced last weekend, the school is operating with minimal staff on site to reduce mobility. All class teachers and some office staff are currently working from home. The Department of Education provided the following strong advice for parents and carers:

"Parents must keep children - of all ages, across primary and secondary schooling and early childcare - home if they can. Students will be supported to learn from home. Schools and early childhood education and care services, including Out Of School Hours Care services are open for any child that needs it. Thank you for your support.”

School is open for children of essential workers and any child who needs it and these students are supervised by qualified teachers. Thank you for your ongoing support.

We understand that there are times that parents and carers may need to communicate with their child’s teacher. To contact your class teacher please email them via the school email: [email protected] Please help us by putting the teacher’s name, child’s name and class in the subject line. Thank you.

Cyber safety To support parents and carers at this time, we have brought forward a parent and carer cyber safety webinar by ySafe. This will be conducted virtually on Tuesday the 3 August at 7pm. An email was sent out today and there is further information on page 7.

Calendar This term we have a number of school events planned including, Education Week, Science Week and Book Week. Due to the current health guidelines, we have cancelled the planned Open Day next week and moved the Athletics Carnival for Years 3-6 to 17th August. Please refer to the Sentral Parent Portal Calendar as this is updated with information as changes occur.

I hope you enjoy the samples of our ‘one model of learning’ in the following pages showcasing Kindy, Year 5 and Year 6. Thank you to those who sent in the ‘learning at home photos’ some of which are on page 6, they are fabulous.

Please take care and stay safe. Cherie Stone Principal

Supporting Your Child in the Digital World

We know this is a challenging time and students are using digital platforms more during remote learning. To support you during this time, we have engaged the company YSafe who focuses on educating students and parents about being safe on line.

The director Yasmin London has worked with our students over many years, originally as part of the police force and now she and her team presents to schools all over Australia. The session provides hints and resources to support you in managing your child’s use of technology. Yasmin is positive about using technology for learning and passionate that all students use technology safely. She also helps parents create a safe environment at home for using technology.

Parent virtual session is Tuesday August 3rd.

Please register for this event by following the link provided. This is an important school event for all parents to attend.

Student sessions will be held in Week 5 this term.

ySafe Parent Information Session Protecting children in their digital worlds is an ever-evolving task for Australian families. Now more than ever parents are looking for guidance in how to manage screen time and navigate the world of games and social media.

We are therefore pleased to help our parent community by offering a crucial and engaging education session with ySafe, Australia’s leading provider of cyber safety education. This practical, strategy-rich session will cover the most important points that all families need to know about online safety, covering key information about social media and gaming, screen time recommendations and step-by-step instructions on how to set up a cyber safe home for kids of all ages.

If you’ve ever struggled with getting your kids off their games and into bed, worried about the content of the games that they are playing or felt concerned that your child was spending too much time in the digital world, this workshop is for you!

Once parents have registered for the session, they will receive a reminder about the event the day before the session. We will also send across the link to your Cyber Safety Hub once we receive your questionnaire information.

Spotlight On…

This year we are looking to redesign our library space into a creative, imaginative and inspired learning hub for all students.

What our library currently looks like…

We are asking parents, carers and community members to put on their thinking caps and become architects, designers, artists and creative directors.

Simply … Download a copy of the template provided on the next page.

Use available mark up tools on your device to showcase your design.

OR Print out a copy and annotate over the top.

Please email your designs to [email protected] by Friday the 30th of July.

We can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Please note each student will have the opportunity to submit their own design via Seesaw next week.

I just want to take the time to thank everyone in our Band program who made the successful switch to online learning this week. It was great seeing everyone together making music again (even if it was through Zoom)! In case you weren't sure whether or not to try it out, I would encourage you to give it a try this week. You still have your same conductor and tutor as usual, and it's a great chance to see all your Band friends too. If you have any questions about online Band, please contact me at [email protected]

Stay safe and healthy everyone! Keegan Cirillo

Your normal routine

If you don’t understand something, ask your teacher or classmates online.

Talking to your teachers and in class is different from how you speak to your friends online. Use proper grammar and avoid excessive emojis.

Take breaks away from screen. Move around and try not to sit all day.

Work in a quiet area, at a desk or table and try to limit distractions.

During calls with your teacher, stay focused on the call. Avoid reading chats or looking at other tabs.

Eat breakfast, brush your teeth and get dressed in the morning.
