National life and the economy are changing much faster than our schools. Schools and communities need to respond by serving our students better. Our nation faces a deeply troubling future unless we transform the lost opportunity of the senior year into an integral part of students’ preparation for life, citizenship, work, and further education.

Seniors at Ben Davis● We know many seniors are “plugged in” at Ben Davis;

they take full AP/Dual Credit or belong to a club or program.

● But we believe the 8th semester needs to be a firm, planned, articulated bridge to College or Career.

● The bridge must include the rigor and skills needed for the next phase after the stage.

● The 7-11th grade years must articulate and align to support this bridge.

Research● According to Psychologist, Laurence Steinberg, students

spend 15-20 hours per week at work, 20-25 hours/week spent socializing, 15 hours in extra-curricular activities, and 15 hours of watching television, leaving very little

time left to study.● How can we ensure students remained engaged in a

relevant way throughout their senior year? How do we compete against the distractions? What happens if we do not?

Remedial education at the collegiate level also has significant costs to students, taxpayers and institutions, with estimated annual costs exceeding $35 million at Indiana’s community college alone.*

Secondary Redesign MissionThe Secondary Schools of Wayne Township will create a coordinated and

articulated educational program, grades 7 through 12, that will provide

seamless transitions from middle school through Ben Davis High School

graduation with a focus upon college and/or career readiness.

Stakeholders will:

● create a new senior experience and backwards map, changing the 7-

11 experience.

● identify and enhance an individualized educational path for students

through an innovative experience that is dramatically different than a

traditional secondary education.

● help students create and meet a postsecondary goal.
