CAMP PERRY, OHIO – Over 600 offi cials, competitors and spectators gathered at Camp Perry’s Rodriquez Range for the 2007 National Matches First Shot Ceremony Mon-day afternoon.

The First Shot Ceremony is the traditional opening for the National Matches. This year’s speaker was Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army, Mr. John McLaurin III.

The National Matches, created by the U. S. government in 1903, have a proud heritage that looks back to the National Rifl e Association’s ‘Annual Matches’ that began in 1873 and to the establishment of Camp Perry in 1907.

The ceremony began with a parachute jump by Maj. Larry Henry and Sgt. 1st Class Ronald Piwarski of Company B, 2nd Battalion, 19th Special Forces Group of the Ohio National Guard, that brought an American fl ag onto Drop Zone Camp Perry from a UH-60 Blackhawk piloted by Chief Warant Offi cer 4 Rob Diamond of the 137th Aviation Battalion also of the Ohio National Guard. This fl ag was then passed to a color guard that raised it on the main Camp Perry fl agpole to begin the ceremony.

Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur provided the fl ag, which was fl own over the U.S. Capital in recognition of the Camp Perry Centennial National Matches.

Members of the 122nd Army Band, under the direction of Chief Warrant Offi cer 3 Robin Kessler played the National Anthem. They also performed a concert for the audience prior to the ceremony.

At the end of the National Anthem, two F-16 Fighting Falcons, piloted by Col. Richard “Rooster” Loh-nes, Commander, and Col. Craig Wallace of the 178th Tactical Fighter Wing, Ohio National Guard fl ew-over Rodriguez Range in a salute to the opening of the Camp Perry Centennial National Matches.

The Governor of Ohio, Ted Strickland, was scheduled to speak and present two resolutions during the ceremony. Unfortunately, Governor Strickland had a family emergency and could not attend. In his place, Maj. Gen. Greg Wayt, the Adjutant General of Ohio and a member of the Governor’s cabinet, spoke and pre-sented two resolutions commending the NRA and the Civilian Marksmanship Program.

CMP Director Gary Anderson, master-of-ceremonies, then introduced the First Shot Speaker, Mr. John McLaurin III, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army. Mr. McLaurin holds a Juris Doctor Degree from the University of Mississippi and is a graduate of the Army War College. He retired as a Colonel in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps.

Mr. McLaurin was actively involved in the creation of the CMP. In 1995, while working for the Congress, he drafted a bill that established the CMP as a federally-chartered non-profi t corporation.

He was sworn into the Senior Executive Service in 1995. In his current position as Deputy Assis-tant Secretary of the Army – Human Resources, his areas of responsibility include Active, Guard and Reserve Component’s personnel matters and Accessions programs.

Mr. McLaurin began by inviting the crowd to take off their jackets due to the hot weather. He spoke of the early marksmanship of the pioneers that gave birth to America and the values that were taught by the shooting sports such as discipline and obedience to orders. “Were it not for the marksmanship of our forefathers, there would be no United States of America,” he stated.

He fondly recalled attending the 2007 National Junior ROTC Air Rifl e Championship. He said, “the values displayed by [those] young men and women can raise goose bumps on your arms and bring tears to [your] eyes.”

“Without shooting sports in America,” said McLaurin, “it would be a whole lot more diffi cult to mold the future leaders of Amer-ica. What you see in the press about what is happening with America’s youth is not what’s happening with American’s youth who are in marksmanship.”

After McLaurin’s speech, Anderson invited him to step to the fi ring line to fi re the ceremo-nial fi rst shot to offi cially open the 2007 National Matches.

The rifl e that was used to fi re this year’s First Shot is serial number one of 100 Bushmaster Limited Edition Camp Perry National Match DCM-XR Series Rifl es. Anderson described it as “a prime example of the high quality competition service rifl es that are used in the National Matches.”

Bushmaster is selling the remainder of the series at the 2007 National Matches and will con-tribute $100 from every Limited Edition Camp Perry National Match DCM-XR Series Rifl es sold to the CMP’s Junior Highpower National Match Support Program. This program is used to used to help pay travel and competition expenses for junior shooters who participate in the National Trophy Rifl e Matches.

The First Shot Ceremony ended with a Mr. McLaurin posing with competitors, spectators and several military teams.

National Trophy Pistol Matches

A Message from the DCM:

The CMP is pleased to provide you with this souvenir printed edi-tion of the Final Results of the 2007 National Trophy Pistol Matches. 943 individual shooters, 99 more than in 2006, participated in either or both the Pistol Small Arms Firing School and the National Trophy Pistol Matches. We thank all of you for participating and making this year’s National Trophy Pistol Matches bigger than they have been in years. We were also very pleased with the signifi cant increase in junior participation this year.

The 2007 National Matches were especially unique because we were celebrating the 100th anniversary of the fi rst National Matches that took place at Camp Perry in 1907. With an impressive First Shot Ceremony and many special events, it was a great year to be at Camp Perry.

There was also a lot of great shooting in this year’s matches. 2007 shooting heroes included:

• Steve Reiter, who won his second President’s Pistol Match.• SSG James Henderson, USAMU, who won the General Custer

Trophy for the second time. Henderson also led the Army Pistol Team to a Gold Cup win in the National Trophy Pistol Team Match.

• GySgt Brian Zins, who won the Military Police Corps Trophy for the second year in a row by fi ring the highest individual score in the National Trophy Team Match. Zins overall total in the three service pistol matches topped all other competitors.

• 16-year-old Heather Deppe and 15-year-old Joseph Totts, who won the two individual junior pistol awards.

The CMP extends sincere thank yous to these organizations and individuals for their signifi cant contributions to another great National Matches:

• The Army Marksmanship Unit and coaches representing the Active and Reserve teams from the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard gave us another superb Pistol Small Arms Firing School.

• The NRA staff and range volunteers operated the ranges with effi ciency, courtesy and skill.

• Erik Pierce at the National Match Armory in Rendon, Texas pro-duced two splendid M1 Garand presentation rifl es for the Presi-dent’s and NTI Pistol Match winners.

• Port Clinton area supporter Bill Gordon of Photomaker provided many excellent photos of National Matches events.

• The Ohio National Guard Camp Perry staff headed by Fort Ohio Commander COL Jim Chisman; the USAR soldiers who handled transportation, medical, signal and other duties and certainly the CMP staff who continued their tradition of dedicated service to shooters.

We sincerely hope that all of you had a great experience at the 2007 “Camp Perry Centennial” National Matches. We hope to see you back at the 2008 National Matches.

National Trophy Rifl e and Pistol MatchesThe National Trophy Rifl e and Pistol Matches are the annual U. S. national championship in service pistol and service rifl e shooting. The National Trophy Matches were established by federal law in 1903, are still conducted under the statutory authority of the U. S. Code (Title 36 USC § 40725-40727) and are now governed by the Civilian Marksmanship Program. Shooters from all over the U. S., civilian and military, test their skills and compete to determine the nation’s best service pistol and rifl e shooters. To fulfi ll the CMP’s statutory responsibility to “instruct citizens in marksmanship,” the National Trophy Rifl e and Pistol Matches are open to all shooters regardless of skill level. Beginners compete and learn while shooting side by side with champions. The tradition of the matches and their competitions for prestigious national trophies celebrate marksmanship excellence and provide incentives to develop individual marksmanship skills, equipment and a national competition infrastructure. The CMP National Trophy Rifl e and Pistol Matches are held in conjunction with the NRA National Rifl e and Pistol Champion-ships through a partnership between the two organizations. The Ohio National Guard and U. S. Army Reserves also provide vital support for the matches. The CMP National Trophy Rifl e and Pistol Matches and the NRA National Rifl e and Pistol Championships are collectively known as the NATIONAL MATCHES.

2007 Pistol SAFS and M9 EIC Match

CAMP PERRY, OHIO – Learning gun safety and target shooting techniques under the

instruction of master shooters is benefi -cial to a newcomer

as well as to an ex-perienced shooter in

the sport of competitive shooting.

The Pistol Small Arms Firing School or SAFS

that was conducted here at Camp Perry on 9-10 July was sponsored by the Civilian Marksman-ship Program and conducted by the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit or USAMU from Fort Ben-ning, Ga. The school gave classroom and one-on-one instruction to over 401 individuals from all over the United States.

The Pistol SAFS started with registration on Sunday that started at 7 a.m. in the morning and ended at 9 p.m. SAFS students fi nished regis-tration by receiving a USAMU T-Shirt, a free USAMU Advanced Pistol Guide written by the USAMU and published by the CMP, a match information sheet and a name badge as well as entry into the next day’s pistol instruction class, practical work on the range and entry in the M9-EIC match on Tuesday.

The pistol SAFS began with a half-day of classroom instruction conducted by the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit where they covered topics that included safety, pistol functioning, shooting positions and basic fi ring techniques.

“The class provides a half-day of instruction that gives novices the ability to start with a basic foundation that they can build on to reach a semi-advanced level,” said Sgt. 1st Class Charles E. Coffey, a shooter with the Army Marksmanship Unit, “it basically teaches everything that [peo-ple] need to know about pistol fi ring.”

“It was one of the better classroom instruc-

tions ever,” said Windell F. Fisher, a native of Columbus, Ohio, who this year marked the 38th consecutive time that he has attended the Na-tional Matches.

The instructors also covered special topics that are vital to a shooter including the effects of weather and mental conditioning in preparation for match along with showing the basic position fundamentals and how to shoot.

“The class was taught well by the instruc-tors. It was easy for people to understand,” said Fisher.

After formal instruction USAMU soldiers, the audience had an opportunity to ask ques-tions to a fi ve-person panel composed of Staff Sgt. Thomas A. Grieve, an armorer with over 10-years of experience; Staff Sgt. James M. Henderson, a 2670 shooter and the current Na-tional Champion; Steve F. Reiter, also a 2670 shooter, member of the 1980 Olympic Shooting Team and Triple Distinguished; Gunnery Sgt. Brian H. Zins, noncommissioned offi cer-in-charge of the U.S. Marine Corps Pistol Shoot-ing Team and seven-time National Champion, and Dr. Judy L. Tant, a three-time Woman’s Na-tional Champion.

The panel had over 40 championships and 94-years of experience between them. They an-swered questions ranging from the use of aper-tures for the eye to using red-dot and iron sights on .45 pistols.

Once the classroom instruction was fi nished, the instructors moved the students to the fi ring range where they were issued M9 pistols and ammunition to fi re. There they were coached by members of the USAMU, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, National Guard, and USAR shooting teams.

“The coaches devoted most of their atten-tion to teaching the new shooters who had never fi red an M9 before, which left me feeling good that they where helping those that needed it the most,” said Fisher.

The session concluded with individuals shooting four targets on a 25-yard fi ring range, going through a practice competition round of slow, timed and rapid fi re, where shooters could ask questions of their coach on numerous topics that concerned target shooting.

On the second day of the school, SAFS stu-dents were able to compete in the second annual M9 Excellence-in-Competition or EIC match, where the top 10 percent of competitors who have not earned EIC-points could earn four-point introductory legs that counted toward earning a Distinguished Pistol Badge.

The winner of the 2nd annual M9 EIC-match was Paul C. Kane, from Rockville, Md. Kane fi red a 271-6X to receive four-introductory leg points that count toward earning a Distin-guished Pistol Badge. A total of 28 shooters in-cluding Kane earned their fi rst EIC points in the M9 match.

Kane, a graduate of University of Maryland, has been shooting for the past year-and-half. “[Competitive] shooting is a very enjoyable ac-tivity, and all the other shooters I’ve met have been nice and very encouraging to young peo-ple,” he said.

“I encourage young people to contact their local shooting league and get involved,” said Kane.

“I was very pleased with the CMP, NRA, and the post commander,” said Fisher, “every-thing was organized, in tip-top shape and with a friendly atmosphere, it lived up to the highest standards, and I want to commend them.”

Paul Kane, of Rockville, MD, won the M9 Pistol EIC Match.

(From left to right) Staff Sgt. Thomas A. Grieve, Dr. Judy L. Tant, Gunnery Sgt. Brian H. Zins, Steve F. Reiter and Staff Sgt. James M. Henderson, Reiter and Zins Dominate 2007 National Trophy Pistol Matches—Again!

The National Trophy Pistol Matches are the nation’s national championship in service pistol shooting. Competitors in these matches must use U. S. military pistols, either the M1911 .45 cal. or M9 9mm or their civilian equivalents, while fi ring from one-handed standing positions at bulls-eye targets placed at 50 and 25 yards. These matches have a long tradition that dates back to 1891 when the Distinguished Pistol Shot Badge was estab-lished by the Department of War and even earlier to when military pistol competitions fi rst began in this country. The National Trophy Pistol Matches were inaugurated by Congress and the Department of War, but are now governed by the CMP. These service pistol matches are an important part of the National Matches that are currently taking place at Camp Perry, Ohio.

There are three major individual trophies that are awarded in these matches each year, the Presi-dent’s Pistol Trophy that is awarded to the winning competitor in the President’s Match, the Custer Trophy that is awarded to the overall winner in the National Trophy Individual Pistol Match and the Military Police Corps Trophy that is awarded to the competitor with the highest overall individual score in the National Trophy Pistol Team Match. In the last ten years, three shooters, SSG James Hen-derson of the U. S. Army, Steve Reiter, a civilian from Arizona, and GySgt Brian Zins, USMC, have dominated the winners lists for these key matches. 2007 was no exception, Reiter won the President’s Pistol Match, Henderson won the National Trophy Individual Match and Zins won the Military Police Corps Match.

Sunday, 15 July, was National Trophy Pistol day at Camp Perry, Ohio. The day started bright and early with the fi rst event, the President’s Match. The 40-shot President’s Pistol Match be-

gan in 1981 and has become especially important because the winner not only places his name on the President’s Pistol Trophy that is permanently dis-played at Camp Perry, but he also receives a con-gratulatory letter from the President of the United States. The top 100 competitors in this match are designated as members of the prestigious Pres-ident’s 100. The winner is also rewarded with a presentation M1 Garand rifl e that was prepared by the National Match Armory in Rendon, Texas. The President’s Pistol Match consists of 20 shots slow-fi re at 50 yards, 10 shots timed-fi re at 25 yards, and 10 shots rapid-fi re at 25 yards.

Taking fi rst place for this match was 65-year-old Steve Reiter, a former USAR shooter who now lives in Tucson, AZ. Reiter’s score of 386-15X just edged the great Marine champion Brian Zins, who fi red a 386-11X. Henderson was third at 380-13X. They were the only three shooters in this diffi cult match to score 380 or higher. The 100th place shooter fi red a score of 349-5 to establish the cut-off score for the President’s 100.

The Junior President’s Pistol match, where competitors use .22 cal. pistols, was fi red concur-rently with the President’s Pistol Match, where open competitors fi red service pistols. The win-ner in the Junior President’s Pistol match was 15-

year-old Joseph Totts from Mogadore, OH, who scored 369-14X. Coming in second was 16-year-old Heather Deppe of Colorado Springs, CO, who fi red 365-15X. Deppe won this match two years ago, but she did not compete in the National Tro-phy Matches in 2006 because she represented the USA Shooting Team in the World Junior Cham-pionships in Zagreb, Croatia. Deppe is a resident of Texas, but is temporarily located in Colorado Springs where she is training at the Olympic Train-ing Center.

The National Trophy Individual Pistol Match and the Junior NTI Match followed the President’s Pistol Match. The NTI is an Excellence-in-Compe-tition match in which the top 10 percent of all Non-Distinguished competitors, military and civilian, earn EIC points that count towards earning the Dis-

The US Army Blue team won the NTT with a combined score of 1126-33X.

65-year-old Steve Reiter, of Tucson, AZ, was the 2007 President’s Pistol Match winner.

SFC James Henderson from the U. S. Army Marks-manship Unit won the National Trophy Individual Pistol Match with a 293-10X score. He is shown here at the Awards Ceremony where he received a trophy plaque and presentation M1 Garand rifl e. The presenta-tion rifl e was crafted by Eric Pierce of National Match Armory in Rendon, Texas. The presenter was Major General A.J. Feucht, Assistant Adjutant General, Air, State of Ohio.

Joseph Totts, from Mogadore, OH, was the top junior shooter in the Junior President’s Pistol Match.

tinguished Pistol Shot Badge. In this match, com-petitors fi re the “National Match Course,” which is 10 shots slow-fi re at 50 yards, 10 shots timed-fi re at 25 yards and 10 shots rapid-fi re at 25 yards. Tak-ing fi rst place was SSG James Henderson with an aggregate score of 293-10X. Henderson, who fi red with the USAR team, joined the Active Army after the 2006 National Matches and now is a member of the U. S. Army Marksmanship Unit Service Pis-tol Team at Fort Benning, Georgia. Henderson won the Custer Trophy and a presentation M1 rifl e that also was gunsmithed by Eric Pierce of National Match Armory. Following Henderson in second was Zins with a score of 291-7X and SSG Adam Sokolowski of Fort Benning, GA, with 290-10X. Sokolowski won this match in 2006.

The order of fi nish was reversed in the Junior NTI Match. This time Heather Deppe took fi rst place with a score of 276-5X, just two points off of her own National Matches record, while Totts was second with 273-3X.

The Gold Cup Trophy, which is awarded to the winner of the National Trophy Team Match, is one of the most famous team championship trophies in American marksmanship. The 2007 Gold Cup Trophy went to US Army Blue with an aggregate score of 1126-33X. Their team captain was SFC Jason St. John and the team coach was SSG Lyman Grover. Team members were SSG James Hender-son, SGT Robert Park II, SSG Adam Sokolowski and SGT Michael Gasser. Gasser was the Army Blue Team’s “new shooter.” Each National Trophy Team is required to have one team member who has never fi red in this match before who is desig-nated as their new shooter.

Coming in second was the 2006 Gold Cup win-ner, the USMC Scarlet team, with a score of 1112-28X. Captain of team was CWO3 James Fraley; their team coach was GySgt Jerry Zingg. Firing members were GySgt Brian Zins, Sgt Adam Pep-per, Sgt Matthew Walsh and GySgt Jerry Zingg. Third place went to the Arizona State Rifl e & Pis-

tol Association team with a score of 1098-26X. The Arizona team captain was Mario Stajner and team coach was William Weldon. Members of the team were Steve Reiter, Donald Kling, John Zurek and Jon Milan. For their overall third place effort the Arizona team won another prestigious trophy, the Oglethorpe Trophy, that is presented to the top civilian state or club team in the National Trophy Team Match.
