SUMMARY
The objective of the project was to help underprivileged people. The NGO we were allotted
was Qamar Sports Club. Qamar Sports Club is headed by Mr. Jamshed Farooqui, the former
U-19 Mumbai Volleyball captain. It is has turned out to be as one of the best volleyball clubs
in Maharashtra over the years. The club gives fitness oriented training to the kids in the
locality and some of them have even managed to reach the national level.
The main problem was the lack of communication skills in the students. The narrow thinking
of their families was causing the main hindrance in their growth.
The main objective was to improve their standards of living by conducting lectures on
Spoken English, Moral Values, Career guidance and Insight. We even made efforts to change
the perception of their families by visiting their homes and telling the importance of sports
and education in life.
The strategy we used to accomplish the objective was to replace the traditional pedagogy
with the modern method of interactive teaching. We tried to make friends with them and
enhance their inner talents by motivating them for the same. Guidance was given regarding
the basic steps they should take to achieve their future aspirations.
We would recommend the permanent faculties to be more friendly without adjusting with the
norms of the school. Some insight sessions should be added to the academic calendar to boost
up their confidence and ensure their mental peace.

INTRODUCTION
History
Mr. Jamshed Farooqui, the founder of Qamar Sports Club started coaching the students in
Volleyball in 1995 to help beat their addiction or the pressure to cave in. But it was only two
years ago that he could form a volleyball team of his own. Today, the children from different
slums of Bhandup smash the ball at Vallabh Bhai Suri ground in Mulund.
Farooqui, a resident of Sonapur slum in Bhandup, began taking underprivileged children who
were already drug addicts or faced peer pressure to take to a life of drugs under his wing after
his triumphant return home in 1988. His career was cut short the next year with his father’s
death.
Volleyball took a backseat, but not his passion. He turned his focus on the bigger tragedy
unfolding before his eyes: boys, aged 10-18, in the bylanes of nearby slums sniffing
turpentine and consuming psychotropic drugs. “I decided to do something about it,” recalls
Farooqui. He began coaching them in volleyball in 1995 to help beat their addiction or the
pressure to cave in.
Getting through but it was only two years ago that he could form a volleyball team of his
own. Today, the children, from different slums of Bhandup, smash the ball at Vallabhbhai
Suri Ground in Mulund. Farooqui spends out of his own pocket for the equipment needed.
Vision and Mission The NGO wants to see all the students achieve success in life. They want the potential
students to come up with confidence and represent India at international level in Volleyball
and educating them as well.
Qamar Sports Club wants to see its all the students to play Volleyball at national level and
make them successful in life.
The Club sees itself as a State level club representing Maharashtra in the near future.
Activities undertaken by the NGO 1. Training the students in Volleyball.
2. Providing them with necessary equipments without charging anything.
3. Helping the children who are away from the correct path and giving a right direction
to their futures by providing them with counselling sessions.
4. Organizing district level tournaments.
5. Approaching the families of the students to create awareness regarding the importance
of education as well as sports in life.
Student Project Activities
Tasks Assigned: To improve the Spoken English skills of the students in the locality
To give career guidance
To teach moral values
To spread awareness about sports and education among the parents
Day 1: Monday, 21st November 2016
Our NGO guide Mr. Jamshed took us to the nearby Mohhamadi Urdu High School, where
our Group leader, the team co-ordinator and Mr. Jamshed himself had a word with the
Principal and Director of the school. Mr. Jamshed had planned to conduct the classes outside
the school compound after school every day, but fortunately the principal asked us to take
Spoken English classes during the last period of the school timing in the school classrooms
itself.
We observed that the students read and write well in English, but were weak with their
speaking skills. We asked them to introduce themselves and thereby analysed the level of
each student. We taught them meanings of words which they felt are new to them. We called
forward two students and initiated a conversation between them and rectified the mistakes in
the conversation for the whole class. Students were very keen to learn and showed positive
response. We told them the importance of having an ambition in life and setting a role model
for themselves. We asked each of them to find two new words for the next day. Thus, ended a
very interesting session with the kids.
Day 2: Tuesday, 22nd November 2016
After evaluating the students, we decided that we need to start from the basics because the
roots were not that clear to them. So today we made them understood the difference between
singular and plural and also help them understood the use of is and are, according to that.
Then we taught them about the vowels and the usage of a and an with context to that. And at
the end of the class we gave them homework that they should write some sentences using
singular and plural.
Day 3: Wednesday, 23rd November 2016 Homework of the previous class was checked and corrected. And every day we took
introduction of one student to improve their confidence level. Today we picked up the course
as to be reading and taught them how to read effectively with the correct usage of
punctuations and also helped them understand the meaning of difficult words and made them
learn how to use the dictionary and what is the use and importance of English language for
them. And one of the professor of the school came to us and ask to help the students of 9th A
for the science exhibition to be held on Saturday. We talked to the students they were group
of four girls and they told us about the topic and what all they have prepared till then. And we
asked the class to come with a drawing of their choice and to write around 5 sentences about
the same in English.
Day 4: Thursday, 24th November 2016
The most important part of our task was ‘Career Guidance’ to the students. We told each one
of them how to target and achieve their ambitions and reminded them to keep a backup
option for their sky-high hopes.
We talked to them about the value of education and how education can help them improve
their society and surroundings. We told them that “educating the mind without educating the
heart is no education at all.”
We corrected the sentences which were pending on the previous day.
Day 5: Friday, 25th November 2016 On this the class the fully on perceptions and emotions of a individual as that was asked by
the principal of the school to the team leader that today’s class should focus on how to
broaden their thinking as she told me the that most of the children are very narrow minded.
And we helped the group of our class to prepare for the science exhibition.
Day 6: Saturday, 26th November 2016
We went and been a part of the science exhibition. We remarked them with our inputs. As
there was Science exhibition no classes were conducted today and Jameshed Sir allotted us
the task of going to the houses of students who were in the volley ball team and explain them
about the importance of the co- curricular activities with the academics. So I went and met
four families and explained the same.
Day 7: Monday, 28st November 2016
We made the students understand the meaning of difficult words and informed them what are
the ways to learn and improve their English. Guidance was also given about the importance
of education and competition that they will be facing in future.
Day 8: Tuesday, 29th November 2016
On that day we discussed about the “WH” questions and how to form questions. Homework
was also given to the students that they should come up with 5 questions using the same.
Discussion was also made on the words that were taught in the previous class by framing
sentences with those words to help them revise and retain the same.
Day 9: Wednesday, 30thNovember 2016
Difference between Has/Have was taught to the class with the correct usage. We came to
know that the students were not clear about the difference and usage of He/She/Him/His/Her.
So we took a small session about that. We asked few students to come up and give their
introductions, just as a part of revision. After the class we did the street play and the theme
allotted to us was “Right To Freedom”.
This was one of the most interesting part of our NGO internship, the “nukkad naatak”. It went
more smoothly than we planned it to be. Our NGO guide and the sports club students helped
us in gathering the crowd.
Day 10: Thursday, 1st December 2016
We took a brief session on “Parts Of Speech” from the basics and made each and every
student clearly understand about all the parts of speech as there were many misconceptions
about the same and we even made them understand about the difference between Direct
Speech and Indirect Speech.
Day 11: Friday, 2nd December 2016
The whole class was about Career Guidance. We helped the students with what they should
do to take a step ahead towards their careers and dreams and even discussed about the
opportunities and challenges in the different streams that they would be opting after their 10th
grade.
Day 12: Saturday, 3rd December 2016
We tried to revise all the major points that we had discussed till now. Vote of thanks was
given to the students and we even distributed chocolates as a token of appreciation with
which we wished them all the best for their future aspirations. Feedback was also taken from
the students. Students of our class came up with a cake and gifts for us which really touched
our hearts.
CONCLUSION Thus, ended our 14 days NGO internship. We, as a team at Qamar Sports Club were really
effective and I strongly feel that we have served the cause for which we were sent there. I
sincerely thank ITM and DORAI Foundation for giving us this wonderful opportunity.
LEARNINGS The journey was not merely an internship for us, it was rather a great experience where we
learnt a lot of things.
There we learnt how to manage time. Since we had to be punctual for the classes, we
managed everything accordingly from the travelling which was very time consuming
to our routine of studying regularly.
We learnt that politeness is always better than being rude or strict. You can get the
things done more easily when you are polite to someone. We learnt this when the
students’ approach towards us was different from what they had towards their
permanent faculties.
One should never judge anybody on his/her communication skills. There were many
students who lacked in this skill but were extremely talented. The way they gave us
the respect made us realise that even we need to widen our thinking.
Patience is the foremost think if you need to be successful in life. There were many
instances in this journey where one could have easily lost his/her temper, but we
realized that only patience and self control was the key to accomplish our goals.
We learnt that one can definitely live happy without luxuries in life. The area in which
we visited was not that developed, but the smile on each and every person’s face
made us realise that it is not that difficult to survive without comforts and luxuries in
life.
