FRESE VALVE TESTS SUMMARY

© BSRIA Final Report 50378/1 1

SUMMARY This report details work carried out to determine the ability of a Frese Optima to meet the manufacturer’s specifications in respect of flow control, together with an assessment of the range characteristics and any noise generation during operation. The average flow for each valve/cartridge combination tested was within a +/- 5% tolerance of the nominal maximum rated flow (1050l/hr) when tested full open at various pressure differentials. Fitment of a double bend upstream of an Optima DN20 valve had no significant effect on flow control. No discernible noise was detected during the tests, either at steady flow conditions or during pressure changes or actuator operation. Full details of the test programme and results are included within the main body of this report.

1 INTRODUCTION

This report details work carried out to determine the characteristics of the Frese Optima valve in respect of cartridge flow control, range, stem travel and an assessment of any noise generation. The work was carried out at the BSRIA test laboratories during the period 12 to 21 March 2007. This report refers to the items tested and no others.

2 ITEMS TESTED

The valve was supplied from production stock by Frese, Denmark and consisted of the following pieces:

Frese No Recommended user range (l/hr)

Min ∆P (kPa)

53-1021 100-900* 16 *Nominal cartridge control flow at maximum pre setting of 4 = 1050l/hr. The test piece consisted of a cartridge, orifice and retaining clip in an Optima body, together with a 53-1040, 0-10V actuator. A type number and date code was stamped on the orifice and cartridge combination, which was noted after testing was completed. The valve was supplied without pressure tappings.

3 TEST FACILITY

The test facility was the BSRIA valve test rig. It consisted of a multi pump system fed from a constant head tank. Test circuits of up to four different pipe sizes could be accommodated on common manifolds and separately valved off to allow flow through individual circuits. An additional pump was installed to ensure sufficient pressure could be generated for these tests. Each circuit in use had a calibrated magnetic flow meter in-line, with a digital readout. Differential pressure was measured by means of a DPWA pressure transducer with analogue indicator covering the range 0-10 bar. Pressure tappings were fitted on the test section at 2 diameters upstream and 6 diameter downstream in accordance with BS EN 60534 (Figures 1 & 2). Differential pressure was changed by varying the selected pump speed using a combination of electronic inverter drives and bypass valve. The Optima valve was installed in a ¾ BSP pipe size with 1000 mm straight length upstream and 500 mm downstream. A further test was carried out with a double swept bend immediately in front of the Optima valve (Figure 3).

3.1 INSTRUMENTATION Instrumentation consisted of the following calibrated items. Calibration certificates can be seen in Appendix A.

Instrument Serial No. Date calibrated Siemens MAG1100/6000 DN25 125 21 August 2006 DPWA differential manometer 0-10.0 bar 200536 6 February 2006 Budenberg reference gauge 0-16 bar 371 30 November 2006 Digitron thermometer 112 1 September 2006

3.2 METHODOLOGY The test method consisted of installing the Optima valve and raising the pressure to 1.0 bar with the rotating sleeve set to maximum (Index number 4). The 0-10V actuator was then driven down from 10V to 0V in 1volt increments. The flow rate was noted at each voltage. The pressure was then raised to 10V in the same incremental steps to establish the extent of hysteresis. The pressure differential was then raised to 4 bar, the flow noted and returned to 1 bar and re measured. The actuator was then driven to 5 Volts and this pressure cycle repeated. An assessment of noise was made using a stethoscope on the valve body. The rotating sleeve was marked with index numbers. It was therefore decided to use the main index numbers as the alternative range set values, thus giving four flow ranges that were tested. Therefore the complete test process was then repeated with the sleeve index number set to 3, 2 and 1. A double swept bend was then installed immediately upstream of the Optima valve and all test ranges repeated.

4 RESULTS

The flow test results are tabulated overleaf, and the data plotted. A subjective assessment of noise by means of a stethoscope did not detect any extraneous sounds above a slightly increased sound of rushing water at higher pressures and small actuator openings. No noise at all was evident over the operating range without the use of a stethoscope. Sections 4.1-4.4 show results for tests conducted on a straight pipe. Sections 4.5-4.8 show results with a double bend installed upstream of the Optima valve.

5 CONCLUSIONS

The average flow for each valve/cartridge combination tested was within a +/- 5% tolerance of the nominal maximum rated flow (1050l/hr) when tested full open at various pressure differentials. Fitment of a double bend upstream of an Optima DN20 valve had no significant effect on flow control. No discernible noise was detected during the tests, either at steady flow conditions or during pressure changes or actuator operation.

5.1 COMMENTS/ANALYSIS The Optima DN20 900 valve meets its claimed performance of flows within a +/-5% band when assessed against the maximum pre setting index and nominal flow of 1050 l/hr The actuator showed a smooth progressive characteristic between 1volt and 9 volts, independent of the maximum range (presetting scale) setting when subjected to a differential pressure of 1 bar. Control characteristics appeared to improve slightly as testing progressed (tests on the double bend arrangement followed straight pipe tests). This may have been a function of the new cartridge ‘bedding in’.
