Items to Consider in Project
• Intro– What were some of the goals for the group.– Obstacles group encountered.– Challenges
• Conclusion– Positive outcome of project– Improvement with more time
Spending $$ to Advertise
• Companies spend Third of a Trillion Dollars a year on Advertising (work??)
• Americans are subject to some 3,000 essentially random pitches pr day
• 2/3 say they are constantly bombarded by ads (Yankelovich Partners Study)
• 59% say ads have little or no relevance to them
• Internet AD revenues in the U.S. totaled 11.5 billion in the first 6 months of 2008 (Interactive Advertising Bureau)
• In 2004, Internet AD Revenues were 9.6 billion for the entire year.
• Persuasion Engineering• Behavioral Targeting – are you willing to opt-in
to allow agencies to ‘track’ your surfing habits?– Website visitors were 14 times more likely to click an
ad when it identified to them.– 2004 survey found 2/3 of Internet users believe better
targeted ads would be less annoying– 45% would share personal information in exchange
for that advertising relevance.
Traditional Media Learns from the Internet – More Interactive
• Example: TV Ads for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines have been set to run only when the temperature drops below a certain point in a given market.
• Cable companies experiment with interactive channels that let viewers enlist their remote controls to click on banner ads and onscreen buttons.
• Video games already have ads – but start changing those ads to match an individual player’s move and preferences.
Smart Ads
• Supermarkets in Massachusetts
• Elevators
• Taxis (smart ad vehicles)
• GPS
• Smart Sign Media in Sacramento
• The ultimate smart-ad tool (What is it)
Mobile Phone Marketing
• If you ‘opt-in”
• McDonald’s and Dunkin’ Donuts beam coupons to cell phones – 17% results.
• With GPS – location tracking: Drive down the street, store sends coupon to you.
• Pay using Cell Phones (Japan using it)
The Future of Advertising isHERE NOW
• Theme Park digital photos in your living room
• Orbitz Online Travel Agency – Sink the Putt Ad.
• 70% fast-forward through TV Ads (results?)
