President’s WelcomeDear Colleagues

On behalf of ASOHNS I extend a very warm welcome to you and your partner to attend our 67th Annual Scientific Meeting in Adelaide in 2017.

The ASOHNS ASM is renowned for delivering excellent opportunities for continued learning and development and peer interaction for our members, trainees and visitors. The 2017 meeting will be no exception.

Overall, the program’s content and structure will continue its approach in combining much-needed practical, “how to do it” information with updates on the latest techniques and developments in our specialty.

The main scientific program will be supported by specialist, interactive breakfast sessions and satellite meetings that offer more relaxed and practical opportunities for increasing skills and exchanging information and ideas with presenters and fellow attendees.

For visitors travelling from interstate and overseas, we encourage you to bring your partners and families and extend your stay, as Adelaide and its environs are well worth the visit.

The city of Adelaide, capital of the state of South Australia, is aptly named the ‘Festival City’, for its artistic ambience, many carnivals and cultural events, vibrant cafes, diverse restaurants and world-famous wineries.

The main wine growing areas and most of the beautiful beaches are all within easy driving distance of the city. Further afield, Australia’s natural and unique wildlife can be viewed and enjoyed at various wildlife parks, visiting Kangaroo Island and cruising the Murray River.

South Australia generally enjoys a Mediterranean-style climate with dry, warm summers and mild winters. March is an ideal time to visit, with slightly cooler autumn temperatures while the weather remains sunny, warm and pleasant.

The 67th ASOHNS Annual Scientific Meeting is being held in Adelaide in March 2017, in the newly redeveloped Adelaide Convention Centre.

As convener, I am pleased to welcome all ASOHNS members and guests to attend what promises to be an excellent meeting.

Our focus is on exploring the latest subspecialty knowledge with particular relevance to the general otolaryngologist.

We are being joined by five prominent overseas keynote speakers in the fields of Sleep, Rhinology, Facial Plastics, Otology / Neuro-otology and Head and Neck Surgery.

The theme of our meeting is “Ingenuity at Work”, reflecting the practical application of state of the art knowledge to our day to day practice.

A technician will be available at the speakers’ support centre from Thursday 23 to Sunday 26 March 2017.

Car ParkingThe Adelaide Convention Centre operates two convenient on-site car parks. The Riverbank car park is accessible from King William and Morphett Road via Festival Drive and the North Terrace car park is accessible from North Terrace.

Keynote Speakers

Professor Robert Jackler, MD Edward C. and Amy H. Sewall Professor in Otorhinolaryngology and Professor, By Courtesy, of Neurosurgery and of Surgery, Stanford School of Medicine, Stanford, USA

Dr Jackler did his OHNS at the University of California, San Francisco. After taking a Neuro-otology fellowship at the House Ear Clinic in Los Angles (1985), he joined the faculty of the University of California, San Francisco as assistant professor. In 2003, Dr Jackler was appointed the Sewall Professor and Chair of the Department at OHNS and professor in the departments of Neurosurgery and Surgery at the Stanford University School of Medicine. At Stanford, Dr Jackler transitioned a small division of surgery with five faculty into an independent department with 47 faculty. Apart from his departmental leadership, Dr Jackler served five years as Associate Dean for Postgraduate Medical Education.

Clinically, Dr Jackler is an otologist / neuro-otologist who specialises in complex ear diseases. He has a special interest in tumours of the lateral and posterior cranial base and has written numerous analytical papers derived from his microsurgical series. For over 25 years Dr Jackler has directed a fellowship program in neuro-otology and skull base surgery which has trained a number of academic leaders in the field. Dr Jackler has served as President of the American Neuro-otology Society and was Editor-in Chief of the leading journal in his field, Otology and Neuro-otology, for 12 years. Dr Jackler is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and an honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in both Edinburgh and London.

Dr Jackler has authored over 160 peer reviewed papers, over 40 textbook chapters, numerous editorials, and published three books Neuro-otology (1994, 2004), Atlas of Skull Base Surgery and Neuro-otology (1996, 2008), and Tumors of the Ear and Temporal Bone (2000). Dr Jackler leads the Stanford Initiative to Cure Hearing Loss whose mission is to create biological cures for major forms of inner ear hearing loss through a research effort that is sustained, large-scale, multidisciplinary, focused, goal–oriented, and transformational.

Professor Stephen Park, MD Director of the Division of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Professor and Vice-Chairman of the Department of OHNS, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, USA

Stephen S. Park, MD, is the Director of the Division of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Professor and Vice-Chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. His primary clinic interest is in the field of facial plastic surgery, particularly skin reconstruction, facial rejuvenation, and rhinoplasty.

Dr Park’s scientific research focuses on innovations in tissue-engineered cartilage using both animal and human chondrocytes. He is internationally recognised as one of the leaders in Facial Plastic Surgery and has authored numerous publications on these topics. He is the past president of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) and the Southern Section vice-president for the Triological Society. He also serves on the board of directors for the American Board of Otolaryngology and is the examination chair.

Dr Park grew up outside Detroit, Michigan and graduated from Amherst College in 1984. He then attended the University of Michigan Medical School and received his Otolaryngology training at Tufts University, followed by a fellowship in Facial Plastic Surgery in Portland Oregon. He has been on the clinical faculty at the University of Virginia since 1994. He is married with two sons. He is an avid golfer and active in physical fitness.

Professor Eben Rosenthal, MD John and Ann Doerr Medical Director, Stanford Cancer Center, Stanford, USA

Eben Rosenthal is a surgeon-scientist and academic leader. He is currently serving as the John and Ann Doerr Medical Director of the Stanford Cancer Center, a position he has held since July 2015. He works and oversees the clinical delivery of cancer care across Stanford Medicine and growing cancer networks. He is clinically active in microvascular reconstruction of complex head and neck defects.

He has published over 160 peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts, authored many book chapters and published a book on optical imaging in cancer. He is on the editorial board of Head & Neck and The Laryngoscope and is also a charter member of the NIH Developmental Therapeutics Study Section. Dr Rosenthal has performed preclinical and clinical research on the role of targeted therapies for use to treat cancer alone and in combination with conventional therapy. He has served as principal investigator on several early phase investigator-initiated and industry sponsored clinical trials in molecular oncology. He has received grant funding from the American Cancer Society, NIH/NCI and NIH/NIDCR to study the role of targeted therapy and novel imaging strategies in cancer.

Dr Rosenthal has conducted bench to bedside development of optical contrast agents to identify cancer in the operating room. He leads a multidisciplinary team of scientists through successful IND application to allow testing of fluorescently labelled antibodies in the clinic and operating room. These early phase clinical trials have demonstrated that this technique can visualise microscopic cancer in the operating room and may significantly improve clinical outcomes.

Professor Daniel Simmen, MD Center of Rhinology, Skull Base Surgery and Facial Plastic Surgery, ORL-Zentrum, Hirslanden Clinic, Zurich, Switzerland

Prof Simmen studied medicine at the University of Zürich and also trained in ENT at the department in Zürich with Prof Ugo Fisch as the director at that time. For many years Dr Simmen was the head of the Rhinology and Facial Plastic Surgery Unit at the University Clinic in Zürich Switzerland. His main research interest and clinical focus was therefore the surgical management of chronic rhinosinusitis and transnasal skull base surgery. The second field of clinical interest was facial plastic surgery eg functional and aesthetic aspects in harmony. For over fifteen years Prof Simmen has been a partner at the ORL-Zentrum at the Hirslanden Clinic in Zürich. He is also a lecturer in ENT and Head and Neck Surgery.

He has organised and is running many instructional hands on courses in Zürich and throughout the world. He has published two leading textbooks on endoscopic sinus surgery (Thieme – Manual of Endoscopic Sinus and Skull Base Surgery) and many book chapters and peer-reviewed papers in the field of his expertise.

Professor Claudio Vicni, MD Director, Department of Head & Neck Surgery of ASL Romagna, Chief OHNS Unit – Forli Hospital and Faenza Hospital, Forli, Italy

Dr Vicini is currently the Director of Head & Neck Surgery of ASL Romagna, Chief of Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery Unit at Forli Hospital and Chief, Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery Unit at Faenza Hospital. He is also the Chief of Stomatology & Oral Surgery Service at Forli Hospital.

Dr Vicini’s principal areas of interest are oncological head and neck surgery, sleep disordered breathing surgery, facial plastic surgery, neuro-otology, trans oral robotic surgery and paediatric surgery.

Dr Vicini is the Past President of the Italian Society of Geriatrics ORL, Past Vice President of ASL Forlì Management College, Past President of the Association of Italian Otorhinolaryngology Hospitals and the Incoming President of the Italian Society of Otolaryngology.
