PUB?TIM MACAVOY - UX PROJECT - MAY 2016

THE PREMISE (AKA, I LIKE BEER)

WOULDN’T IT BE FUN TO CREATE SOMETHING ABOUT GOING TO THE PUB? I WONDER HOW PEOPLE DO THAT NOW, AND HOW IT COULD BE IMPROVED? OOH, I COULD DO USER TESTING IN THE PUB!

COMPETITOR RESEARCH

WHO WANTS TO GO FOR A PINT?

▸ Word of mouth, IM, broadcast.

▸ GOOD: Easy to connect, personal.

▸ BAD: Wait time, too much chat, seems needy.

COMPETITOR RESEARCH

WHERE SHALL WE GO?

▸ Word of mouth, location search, review sites.

▸ Foursquare, Untapped, Google Maps

▸ GOOD: easy to find a venue, trust quality, share link with friends.

▸ BAD: Not easily integrated with chat, inspires debate, becomes a multi-step process.

COMPETITOR RESEARCH

WHEN SHALL WE GO?

▸ Calendar, Surveys

▸ Native calendars, Doodle, Chat

▸ GOOD: Helps planning and inclusion of groups or late arrival.

▸ BAD: Requires more work, feels too formal, less likely to have impromptu drinks.

USER INTERVIEWS (AKA, OTHER PEOPLE LIKE BEER TOO)

▸ Going to the pub is habitual, but not consistent, when it comes to time/day.

▸ People are flexible with who they go to the pub with (friends/colleagues), it’s usually about availability.

▸ Questions to do with when/where are often unspoken, or previously mutually agreed, and don’t require much discussion.

▸ People prefer speed and easiness when it comes to going for a quickie.

I DON’T ALWAYS MIND WHO I GO WITH, AS LONG AS THEY’RE FRIENDS, BUT WHEN YOU INVITE LOTS OF PEOPLE, AND YOU START IT AS A CONVERSATION, YOU END UP HAVING TO ANSWER LOTS OF “HOW ARE YOU’S” AND IT BECOMES A BALL-ACHE, BECAUSE YOU JUST WANTED A PINT, DAMNIT…

RESEARCH SUMMARY

KISS

▸ Minimal communication.

▸ Rely on regular habits, word of mouth.

▸ Show availability.

▸ But no search, scheduling, reviewing.

PERSONA 1 OVERVIEW

SAL - THE FRIENDLY FAMILIAR

Name: Sal

Age: n/a

Gender: n/a

Bio: Long.

More info: Sal lives and works in Central London. They have a mid-level, low-stress job. They’ve had many life experiences, jobs, flatshares, and as a result, diverse friendship groups.

BEHAVIOURS AND HABITS ▸ Sal is sociable, but not a big communicator and prefers 1-2-1

occasions. ▸ Laid back, not a fan of making plans. ▸ Doesn’t like to be too visible online. ▸ Favourite phrase is “fuck it”.

GOALS ▸ Sal needs to know whether their usual drinking buddy is

available. ▸ Sal wants a fast solution. ▸ Sal doesn’t want to engage in conversation until they have a

pint in-hand.

KEY SCENARIO

Sal reaches the end of “humpday” and wants to go for a drink to kick-back. They don’t really mind who they go with, as long as it’s quick and easy. They know they can usually rely on one or two friends to be up for a quick pint at the regular place.

1ST TASK FLOW AND SKETCHING

SEND YOUR AVAILABILITY WITH A MESSAGE

USER GOALS AND FEATURE PRIORITISATION

AVAILABILITY AND MINIMAL CONTACT WERE FAVOURED IN CARD SORTING.

▸ GOAL: I want to show that I’m available for the pub.

▸ GOAL: I want to see who’s available to go to the pub.

▸ GOAL: I want to invite someone to the pub.

PERSONA 2 OVERVIEW

MAYBE - THE OPPORTUNIST

Name: Maybe

Gender: Female

Age: 29

Bio: Living it large in the city. Looking for a new house-share if anyone’s interested? Do something with new media - ask me :-)

More info: Maybe prefers socialising in groups. She likes to mix business and pleasure. Her social media is full of “night’s out”.

BEHAVIOURS AND HABITS ▸ Maybe works in large groups and happily sits in the middle of things.

▸ She likes to go out, but never organises things.

▸ Maybe is happy to go out with groups that include friends-of-friends.

▸ Favourite phrase: “What are we doing?”

GOALS ▸ Maybe wants a clear and easy way to see who is already out for

a drink. ▸ She prefers to go out in a group, rather than 1-2-1. ▸ She doesn’t want to commit to any plan before seeing what’s

on offer.

KEY SCENARIO

It’s Friday afternoon and Maybe is ready for a drink. She hasn’t made any plans and wants to see who is around. She’ll decide what she wants to do with her evening once she see’s what other people are doing.

PAPER PROTOTYPE

I LIKE IT, BUT HOW DOES IT WORK?

▸ People understood the concept of inviting people to the pub, and liked it.

▸ They relied heavily on the contact list for all interactions and to see who is available.

▸ Other screens were seen as confusing or not needed.

What does it mean to send a PUB?

Your friend will get the message “PUB?”.

They might send one back, they might not. What that means is up to you...
