  • 4Description: A brochure advertising the Writing Center (WC) on the Brigham Young UniversityIdaho campus.

    Programs:Indesign, Illustrator, Photoshop

    Date: Mar. 28, 2015

Course: Comm130 (Visual Media)Instructor: Ben Pingel

Objectives:Set up a two-sided productLearn how to apply text wrap to a clipped imageUse paragraph styles in InDesign

Process:For the image on the first page, I used Photoshop to pull the three girls and leave the the rest of the people in the picture out and to cut out the background. In Illustrator, I created the WC logo on the first page using the line and curve tools. I also typed ina comma, created an outline, and saved it as a PNG. The rest was created in InDesign using the features it has. I rounded the edge of the images on the inside, applied a text wrap, and created the overall design.

  • 6Description:Create a montage with a spiritual theme by using Photoshop and high quality images

    Programs:Photoshop

    Date: Feb. 14, 2015

    Course: Comm130 (Visual Media)

    Instructor: Ben Pingel

Objectives:Create a focal pointApply typography principlesLearn to blend images effectivelyLearn to use masks

Process:I selected my first image (the flower) and put it as the background. I photoshopped its stem out so my text wouldnt be competing with it and difficult to read. Then I pulled the temple picture, used the sharpening tool on the doors and exterior, and blended it into the flower using the brush tool. Then I added an ice texture to add a scratchy, old but preserved look to the complete image. I chose the flower losing its petals to emphasize that care is required or something beautiful dies. The temple signifies marriage. The quote implies that a marriage must be treated specially for it to last.

    Programs:PhotoshopSony a200 camera

    Date: Feb. 7, 2015

    Course: Comm130 (Visual Media)

    Instructor: Ben Pingel

Objectives:Learn basic photography skillsChoose a color scheme and take a photo to match those colorsUse a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it.Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for NDE (non-destructive editing.)

Process:I started out with the picturewhich I took of a page in A Monster Calls by Patrick Nessusing my Sony a200 SLR. I used vibrancy, sharpness, the blur tool, and color balance to get the image where I wanted it. I chose the image because I wanted to do something literary and picked a quote to match it. I chose one by Benjamin Franklin that I thought could apply to more than just a literary standpoint. Then I picked a color scheme and used the eyedropper tool to give the rectangles and circles colors within the color scheme I chose.

Description:Create a flier advertising a conference for students

    Programs:InDesignMicrosoft Word

    Date: Jan. 24, 2015

    Course: Comm130 (Visual Media)

    Instructor: Ben Pingel

Objectives:Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.Retrieve image and logo from linksCreate a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links in InDesign intact.

Process:I began with sketches then made a very rough version in Microsoft word I could print and write all over. Then, I moved on to Adobe InDesign to create the final project and prepare it for print. I chose the picture I did because I wanted her gaze to lead the eye to my body text and on down. I wanted to try something different with the title, so I used colors to create a hierarchy. The piece uses white space and a small body font to prevent it from overwhelming my readers.

Description: Create a sample web page.

    Programs:Notepad++Photoshop

    Date: Mar. 14, 2015

    Course: Comm130 (Visual Media)

    Instructor: Ben Pingel

Objectives:Learn CSS and HTMLManipulate a web page and apply different featuresUse hex colors

Process:Using Notepad ++, I created a website using a basic outline provided for me. It was my first time using this program, so it was interesting to learn. I had to play around and refresh my page every now and then to ensure my CSS was doing what I thought it was. I used a couple websites to learn how to import a background I created in Photoshop to add some variety and texture. Using CSS, I adjusted the width of the white text box, removed the curved corners, added an image I created in Photoshop for the background, changed my font families and text colors, and added a comment.

I scanned it using the Epson Perfection V300 Photo located in the McKay Library Commons. I used Microsoft Word to create the entire ad. I used the shape tool to create the repeated circle bands and a gradient to create the red to black image at the base.

Description:Create a personal logo for my editing skills

    Programs:IllustratorInDesign

    Date: Feb. 28, 2015

    Course: Comm130 (Visual Media)

    Instructor: Ben Pingel

Objectives:Create a logo to fit my personal needsApply typography rulesUse consistent elements to tie the design together

Process:Using the Niagara Engraved font, I created the S. I typed one S, created outlines, and then deleted the exterior of the font in Illustrator. I duplicated the remaining inside and used red colors to make a red monochromatic color scheme. I drew the fountain pen with the pen tool, applied a fill color, and placed it, Then, moving to InDesign and using a large font size, I made the bracket and imported the double S and the pen. I connected the tip to the double S and set my text above the line.

Process: I copied the double S from the business card design and added the rest of the letters for my name in InDesign. Then, I added the pen into the design and slipped it in the space provided by the leading. I then copied the pen off to the side and descresed the opactity to create a watermark. Using the line and circle tools, I connected the two pens and lined up my contact information for them.
