FINAL PORTFOLIO

Page 2: Final Portfolio

This portfolio contains images of four different subjects viewed from various angles:

(1) A seashell. Some of these images are loosely grouped around the theme of freedom.(2) A Wallace Fountain. These shots primarily focus on the caryatids, figures from antiquity, which decorate the fountain.(3) The Arc de Triomphe. Several of these views help highlight the glory and power of the monument.(4) Carcassonne. These photos all showcase the medieval aspect of the town. During my field trip there, I practiced taking photos of the same subject at different times of day. I have therefore included two separate sets of images showing identical scenes at nightfall and at dawn, one set depicting the Aude Gate and the other the Chateau Comtal.

These images all underwent post processing, some in iPhoto and others in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom.

SEA SHELLS:

FREEDOM

The Sea Shellby Marin Sorescu

I have hidden inside a sea shellbut forgotten in which.

Now daily I dive, filtering the sea through my fingers,to find myself.Sometimes I thinka giant fish has swallowed me.Looking for it everywhere I want to make sureit will get me completely.

The sea-bed attracts me, andI’m repelled by millionsof sea shells that all look alike.Help, I am one of them.If only I knew, which.

How often I’ve gone straight upto one of them, saying: That’s me.Only, when I prised it openit was empty.

Marin Sorescu was a Romanian poet and author (1936-1996) whose works have come to be associated with the struggle for freedom of expression against the oppressive Communist regime.

The Wallace Fountains are cast iron public drinking fountains dating from the late 19th century which have come to be regarded as a symbol of Paris. They are named after Richard Wallace, the philanthropist who designed and paid for them to be erected, and feature sculptures of four caryatids representing kindness, simplicity, charity, and sobriety.

ARC DE TRIOMPHE:

GLORY

Page 18: Final Portfolio

Commissioned by Napoleon in 1806 after his victory at Austerlitz, the Arc of Triumph’s design was inspired by the Arch of Titus in Rome and is dedicated to those who fought and died for France, particularly during the French Revolution, Napoleonic Wars, and World Wars I and II. Its façade has four main sculptures:

Departure of the Volunteers of 1792 (or “La Marseillaise”); The Triumph of 1810; The Resistance of 1814; and The Peace of 1815.

Carcassonne is a beautiful fortified town in the south of France. The present citadel and castle primarily date from the Middle Ages, although there was already a settlement on the site in Roman times. Heavy restoration work was carried out in the mid-1800s by the celebrated architect Eugene Viollet-le-Duc.
