SentenceIn the field of linguistics, a sentence is an expression in natural language. It is often defined as a grammatical unit consisting of one or more words that bear minimal syntactic relation to the words that precede or follow it. A sentence can include words grouped meaningfully to express a statement, question, exclamation, request, command or suggestion. Sentence is a group/string/combination of words which gives a meaningful sence.Examples:He is playing.I am going.

Components of a sentenceClausesA clause typically contains at least a subject noun phrase and a finite verb. While the subject is usually a noun phrase, other kinds of phrases (such as gerund phrases) work as well. There are two types of clauses: independent and subordinate (dependent). An independent clause demonstrates a complete thought; it is a complete sentence: For example, I am sad.A subordinate clause is not a complete sentence:For example, because I have no friends.A simple complete sentence consists of a single clause. Other complete sentences consist of two or more clauses.

Sentence has two main parts(i) Subject (ii) Predicate

SubjectSubject denotes the person or thing about which something is said. Subject may consist of

one word or several words. When a subject of sentence consists of several words, there is always one word in it which is more important than other words. This is called the subject word or simple subject. The subject word is always a Noun.He tried his best. The rich are not always happy.

PredicateThe predicate means what is said about the person or thing denoted by subject. Predicate

may consist of one or more words. When a predicate of sentence consists of several words, there is always one word in it which is more important than other words. This is called the predicate word. The subject word is always a Verb.He went home. The flames spread everywhere.

CopulaWhen helping verb acts as main verb, is known as copula.e.g,

I am a student. (Main verb)I am running. (Helping verb)
