Now is the Time to Focus on Water Conservation Six weeks ago, Folsom Lake was

nearing a level at which water could no longer be pumped into the water treatment plants supplying water to the cities of Roseville and Folsom, and to the San Juan Suburban Water District. Local officials were carefully considering various measures to keep our water supply reliable, including water rationing. February and March brought significant rainfall, increasing the water storage in Folsom Lake from approximately 164,000 acre feet to its current level of 468,000 acre feet (approximately 48% of total capacity). We should be thankful for this good fortune, but this isn’t the time to take our eye off the ball, particularly since snow pack water content was measured at 32 % of average on April 1. The situation is better, but we are not out of the woods.

In response to these concerns, the City of Roseville has implemented a Stage 2 Drought (mandatory twenty percent reduction in water usage for all Roseville water customers and

a mandatory 30 percent water use reduction for commercial landscapes).

Water conservation forces us to change the way we do things, and none of us enjoy that. However, conserving water now may help avoid severe water shortages in the near future,

which could adversely affect local businesses. Given what we could

face, conservation is clearly the better choice.

As we all know, water usage is a business expense. With

the mandatory 20 percent water use reduction in

place, there is no better time than now

to look for ways to use water efficiently.

The City of Roseville has

a Commercial, Industrial and

Institutional Water-Use Reviews

available at no additional cost to

your business. If you’re interested in

lowering your water bill, call 916-774-5761 to

schedule your comprehensive facility review. A certified water-use specialist will work with your facility manager to identify facility and commercial landscape inefficiencies. Reducing water inefficiency at your place of business is good for your bottom line and helps our community weather the ongoing drought.

Placer County Houses the Leader in Green EnergyEnergy 2001 is Placer County’s largest landfill gas-to-

energy producer and a leader in green energy. In 2003, Gary Garratt and Laura purchased Energy 2001 because they recognized the ambition in the company and future benefits and profits it could wield. They were motivated to use their business expertise to ensure that Energy 2001 would become a thriving business. They invested more than $10 million into building a 5 MegaWatt Landfill Gas-to-Electricity Power Plant at Western Regional Sanitary Landfill.

Today, together with Western Placer Waste Management Authority, Energy 2001 captures and destroys the harmful greenhouse gases that come from our garbage in landfills. This otherwise bad gas is used as fuel for engines that convert it into electricity that is sold on the open market. Through this process, Energy 2001 is able to produce enough power for 3,000 homes annually.

Energy 2001 thoroughly values showing students and community groups the practical applications of their technology so they can see what is possible. They are excited about the prospect of building a company on the cutting

edge of technology and with innovation that could prove to be both profitable and beneficial for the community.

With more people beginning to learn more about the technologies and opportunities in the rapidly growing field of renewable energy, Energy 2001 is proud to be a pioneer in a developing industry.

In 20013 the late Gary Garratt and Laura Rasmussen purchase Enery 2001.

CITY OF ROSEVILLE UPDATE

Setting the table for business to be successful in Roseville has been a priority for the city for many years. As

the Chamber President mentions in his column, water conservation is one of our top priorities this year with the drought and several legislative actions in the works that could affect our community’s access to this resource. Given how quickly the discussion evolves by the time this newsletter reaches your mailbox we invite you to stay up to date and learn how you can get involved by registering for updates at www.protectourfolsomwater.com.

Raising awareness of city procurement opportunities the City launched a partnership this year with Public Purchase for posting, notifying and awarding of all formal requests for quotes (RFQs) and request for proposals (RFPs).

This free e-Procurement service provides a single location

to view all open requests for quotation and award information for previous RFQs, RFPs, and RFIs issued through the Public Purchase website. It also provides

automatic notification of bid solicitations and access to bid opportunities with other government entities. Hardcopy bid submittals to our City Clerk (311 Vernon Street) are still required.

In using this new online procurement service, the City hopes to reach a wider range of vendors and attract a broader response to its procurement needs, which will allow for a more competitive bidding environment for all RFQs, RFPs and RFIs. It will also make the process easier and less time consuming for businesses, lowering your costs.

Get more information on this latest business opportunity at www.roseville.ca.us/bids.

While many consider the environment throughout the year, April tends to be when most consumers and

businesses are reminded to recycle in celebration of Earth Day (April 22). Every April, Sims Recycling Solutions provides the community with various opportunities to conveniently recycle their electronic waste in addition to recycling events typically held on the first Friday of the month. Last month’s events, promotions, and local pickups helped Sims collect approximately 500,000 pounds of electronic waste at the Roseville site on Washington Boulevard.

Over the past year Sims made significant improvements to their local electronics recycling equipment making it the most powerful in the world. This improved process and amplified strength uses half the energy and has

enabled Sims to increase their processing capacity to an estimated 72 million pounds per year – the equivalent

of almost four million computers. This process however, can not only handle more e-waste but was also designed to make the collection of electronics quicker and easier for businesses and municipalities with large quantities as well.

As the global leader in electronics reuse and recycling, Sims remains committed to sustainability and preservation of the environment. All decisions are made with the intent to protect the environment,

employees and surrounding communities. For information on our local recycling services, please visit http://www.simsrecycling.com/Locations/Sacramento-CA.
