Indianola Garden Club News

I know. Summer is still a long way off, but when I think lavender, I think summer. If you are ready for a heady whiff of both, join us for our joint meeting with the Kingston Garden Club on Tuesday, March 21.

We will be presented with all things lavender by Susan Harrington from Labyrinth Hill Lavender. Some of you may remember her from the Kingston Farmers Market. Susan has expanded her passion for lavender world wide as an educator and writer. She is a founding member of the United States Lavender Growers Association.

The meeting will take place at the Kingston Village Green Community Center beginning at 12:30 with the presentation at 1:00, followed by a short business meeting. Please note the change in day to Tuesday, March 21, as we generally meet on the third Wednes-day of the month.

We will carpool from the Indianola Clubhouse at about 12:15. If you would like more information about the meeting or Indianola Garden Club in general, contact Nancy Niemi at 360-297-1245 or Sue McClain at 360-297-3473.

MarchThe President’s MessageHow quickly we come up against March deadlines for the club. Wasn’t it just New Years? At any rate, by the end of March, you want to be sure to have renewed your membership! We WILL be printing up a new membership directory in the spring, and need you to get us your information as soon as possible. Do it today. Also, if you meet that March membership deadline, you – yes, you – become eligible to run for one of the four trustee spots we will vote on in August. Having served on the board for the last four years, I can vouch that it is an experience that is:

• Often fun• Sometimes not fun (full disclosure)• Always interesting• Insightful as to what has happened in the

club in the past• Mostly congenial• Enlightening about other points of view in the

community• An opportunity to serve your community

• A chance to think creatively for the greater goodAnd, did you know, if you run to be president, there are term limits, she says trying not to sound too gleeful. But, don’t wait for a knock on your door or a text message or tweet – you can let us know right now if you would like to run to be a trustee. In addition, we would welcome any community member who would be willing to serve on the Nominating Committee – those folks who knock on doors, send text mes-sages, and/or tweet to find people willing to run. Just like the spring pledge drive for Public Radio, the sooner we get our slate of names, the sooner we can stop asking for volunteers. Won’t you take a moment right now to show pity for your fellow wo/man and let Kathy know you will run?

The annual soup cook-off didn’t disappoint as residents and guests tasted scoop after scoop of delicious soups from the twelve entries.

Below, left, Keith Pickrell, Ernie Linger and, behind him, Mike Milling enjoyed each other’s company while filling up.

Soups weren’t the only items available for a mere $4.00 entry. Breads, crackers and desserts completed the menu. And wine was avail-able for a small additional amount.

Needless to say, everyone was full by judging time.

The Annual Soup Cook-off is a Favorite Winter Event

Indianola Reminiscing Back – and forth – 18 YearsCleaning out an old Indianola resident’s home recently, a friend turned up an interesting find. A no longer wanted Post-Intelligencer special section dated June 26, 1999 that was “devoted to a place we call home” highlighted our little town. We scratch our heads to wonder why such a big-city paper would want to feature such a little place like Indianola.

Long forgotten by its readers, we get to take a fun look back – and look who we found – as written by PI reporter Larry Lange...

Madison Butler, like most 11-year-olds, isn’t sure what she wants to do when she grows up. “I kind of

want to be an artist, or a singer, probably,” she muses.(Today, Madison Butler, now Madison Duckworth,

has a silkscreen business that supplies the IBIC with Indianola’s sweatshirts, t-shirts, mugs and more, continuing...)

But there’s little doubt in Madison’s brown-haired head about where she wants to live: Indianola, the idyllic Kitsap County hamlet where she has spent most of her young life.

(Now grown up and, yes, living in Indianola, Madison is a board member of the IBIC and supplies photos to the Indianola, Washington Facebook page. All we need now is to get her to sing at the next Indianola Days Dance.)

Madison

And look who came for a visit ....

Stoping over to see her dad, Eddie Carriere, is daughter Bonnie along with her husband Tony Landes. They came all the way from Missouri with a stop first in California to see Tony’s family.

Bonnie and older brother, Jeff, grew up in Indianola. It’s been about eight years since Bonnie last came for a visit.

Getting their morning hugs ....

Baby Molly and Chloe the dog found each other during a morning visit to the Store. While their parents were getting their morning mugs, they were getting their morning hugs.

Gerald (Jerry) Arthur Vaughan was born on January 16, 1932 in Longview, Washington. He died in Silverdale, Washington on January 25, 2017, just 9 days after his 85th birthday.

He is survived by his four children, Cynthia (Dana), Bonnie (Pat), Joe (Jeanette) and Patrick. He is also survived by his wife, Hollace Vaughan, and his four grandchildren, Reed, Daniel, Thomas and Ava.

In 1979, his wife and our mother Jane died. Henceforth he became both mother and father to his young high school and college aged children.

Jerry attended Seattle Prep High School and Seattle University where he helped contribute to the beginnings of national prominence of the Seattle University basketball program during the 1950’s. His basketball years were interrupted when he served time on the U.S.S. Yorktown during the Korean War.

He spent his career working in the Petroleum and Geothermal energy field. During his career he worked in San Francisco, Seattle, Bakersfield and Santa Rosa.

In 1963, Dad bought the small dentist office owned by Dr. Foster, the son-in-law of Mrs. Isle, and whose cabin was just a short distance from the Indianola Store. He spent many summers making our cabin the quaint, well-loved place it is today. During these years his four children were fortunate to spend carefree days enjoying the beautiful Indianola summers. His children made friends with many of the vacationing residents and they continue to share these friendships 50 years later.

His Catholic faith was important to him. He spent many Sundays during the summer packing his four children into our yellow Rambler station wagon, attending mass at Saint Olaf’s in Poulsbo.

Dad loved gardening, especially with native plants. He was a great music fan, with jazz being his favorite. He loved to golf and he spent his later years on the golf course at White Horse. He was a sharp dresser with a slow talking, laconic personality.

We will treasure the memories, love, and steady guidance we received from Dad.

Jerry Vaughan1932 - 2017

NOTICE: IBIC BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETING DATES CHANGINGDuring both the February and March board meetings, discussion was held to consider moving the board meetings from the first Thursday of each month to the second Thursday of each month to allow for a full treasurer’s report including end of month bank statements. This will also delay the publishing of the Indianola Breeze by one week starting in June, since there’s no May Breeze. (Tentatively approved)
